PVL: Akari mounts huge Set 3 comeback to complete sweep win vs. Capital1
The Akari Chargers crawled back from eight points down in the third set en route to a 25-23, 25-18, 25-23 win against Capital1 in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Tuesday at the FIlOil EcoOil Centre. The Chargers erased a 21-13 deficit in the final frame thanks to timely substitutions and endgame composure, improving to a 2-3 win-loss card while also denying the Solar Spikers (0-5) their breakthrough win. Eli Soyud paced Akari with 12 points while middle blocker Ezra Madrigal and Grethcel Soltones chipped in 11 and nine markers apiece with the latter collecting 15 digs as well. A regrouped Capital1 unleashed a hot 4-0 start in Set 3 before Rachel Austero unloaded a strong ace to make it a 21-12 cushion for the wards of Alas Women head coach Jorge de Brito. But that didn't take the fight out of Akari with Soltones powering through from the left wing before Capital1's opposite spiker Syd Niegos went wide on her back row kill, pulling the Chargers to within three at 21-18. Shola Alvarez would complete a combination play to bring life back to Capital1, 22-18. But Akari stayed composed with newly-subbed Steph Bustrillo providing the unlikely spark, knocking down the hammer from the opposite side before Soltones broke down the wall to tie things up at 22-all. Kacey Galdones brought Capital to a 23-22 cushion, but Akari answered with three straight points capped by an ace from Kamille Cal and an error from Capital 1 to complete the comeback. In the first game, Nxled had its franchise-best start after a hard-fought sweep victory over Galeries, 26-24, 25-23, 25-23. EJ Cariño was at the forefront of offense with 16 points laced with nine receptions while Jovelyn Fernandez and Chiara Permentilla chipped in 14 and 13 markers apiece as they cruised to an impressive 3-0 card. The Highrisers, meanwhile, fell to a winless 0-3 record. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

ZUS Coffee brews five-set escape vs. Capital1 for first PVL On Tour win
ZUS Coffee pulled away late to deny Capital1 its breakthrough, pulling off a 20-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-18, 15-11 victory in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Sunday at the Ynares Center Montalban. The Thunderbelles did what it fell short of yesterday when they absorbed a five-set loss to Akari to open their campaign in the preseason tournament. Veteran opposite spiker Jovelyn Gonzaga provided the finishing kick, converting a kill from the right side that fueled a 4-1 rampage that allowed ZUS Coffee to take the match point at 14-10. Sydney Niegos tried to rally Capital1 by unleashing a strong hammer from the opposite side, but Gonzaga punished the single block of Shola Alvarez to unleash the final blow and tow the Thunderbelles to the win column. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Chery Tiggo outlasts Akari in five sets for 2-0 start in PVL On Tour
Chery Tiggo once again turned to Cess Robles and Renee Peñafiel to pull off a 24-26, 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 15-10 win against Akari and remain spotless so far in the 2025 PVL On Tour on Sunday. Robles poured a team-high 23 points together with 15 digs while rookie Peñafiel continued to impress with 12 markers and eight receptions as the Crossovers improved to 2-0 in Pool B. The Chargers, on the other hand, fell to 1-3. Chery Tiggo made a fightback in the fourth set in bid to finish Akari off right away with Robles tying things up at 17-all before Akari responded with a 6-1 blast that gave the wards of new head coach Tina Salak a 23-18 cushion. The Crossovers then staged a 5-1 rampage fueled by Peñafiel as they trimmed the gap to one, 24-23. Grethcel Soltones, though, flashed her veteran presence and finished the fourth set with an attack of her own to drag the Crossovers to a fifth set. Chery Tiggo just built on that momentum in the deciding frame as they cruised to yet another victory following a four-set romp of Capital1 just yesterday. "Of course masayang-masaya kasi two games tapos two wins. Kung kahapon, naging confidence-booster 'yung pagkapanalo namin, all the more na ito," Chery Tiggo head coach Norman Miguel said. "Malaking bagay sa amin ang panalo na 'to. Sobrang masaya." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Creamline, Cignal off to 2-0 start in PVL On Tour
Creamline and Cignal made strong early impressions in the PVL On Tour, going unbeaten through two games after dispatching separate foes on Monday at the Chavit Coliseum in Ilocos Sur. The Cool Smashers recovered from a Set 2 loss en route to a 27-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18 win over Akari behind an all-around outing from team captain Alyssa Valdez. The seasoned outside spiker dropped 16 points anchored on 13 attacks, two aces, and one block together with 18 receptions to help Creamline surge to a 2-0 start following their dominant three-set victory over Capital1 yesterday. "Syempre happy kami na kahit back-to-back 'yung games namin. Kasi first time na nangyari sa'min na magkasunod na araw, siguro marami pa kaming i-improve," Creamline head coach Sherwin Meneses said. "Sana magtuloy-tuloy 'yung maganda laro namin." Creamline flexed its muscle early in Set 4 in bid to close out the Chargers with Michele Gumabao unleashing back-to-back hammers from the right wing to give the Cool Smashers a 19-11 lead. Akari fought back with Eli Soyud and rookie Chenie Tagaod slicing the gap to five, 15-20. But a service error from Soyud and a Jema Galanza denial on a running attack from Ced Domingo saw Creamline taking a 23-16 cushion. Akari once again tried to mount a comeback with two straight points, including a drop ball hit from Grethcel Soltones, but the latter was then rejected by Pangs Panaga on the next play that allowed Creamline to clinch the match point at 24-18. A successful floor touch challenge, meanwhile, by Creamline sealed the four-set romp. Earlier, Cignal cruised to yet another sweep victory after blanking the struggling Capital1 side, 25-21, 25-22, 25-16, behind a total team effort. Erika Santos continued her fine performance with 11 points while middle blocker Roselyn Doria-Aquino churned out 10 markers as they improved to a 2-0 slate in Pool B. With their losses, Capital1 and Akari both slid to 0-2. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Creamline spoils Jorge de Brito's Capital1 debut with sweep win
PVL On Tour. June 22, 2025. The Creamline Cool Smashers at the Chavit Coliseum. (Photo: PVL) Creamline made easy work of a revamped Capital1 with a 25-10, 25-21, 25-10 win to kick off its campaign in the PVL On Tour on Sunday at the Chavit Coliseum in Ilocos Sur. The Cool Smashers, eager to bounce back from an unusual silver medal finish in the previous All-Filipino Conference, dominated right from the get-go until the final point to spoil new Capital1 head coach Jorge de Brito's debut game. "Happy kami kasi 'yung start ng campaign namin ay maganda, especially na maiksi 'yung preparation. Sa next game namin may aayusin pa namin," Creamline head coach Sherwin Meneses said. Rookie Sheena Toring showed no jitters in her first game as a professional player, shining early on and delivering the quick kill that sent Cool Smashers to a 24-20 lead in Set 2. But the Solar Spikers fought back with Rovena Instrella powering a quick 2-0 run before Alyssa Valdez unleashed one from the left wing to wrap it up. Creamline came out firing in Set 3, unleashing a blistering 7-2 run to set the tone early before Rachel Austero provided some source of light for Capital1 on her quick kill, 6-9. That was the closest they got as the Cool Smashers responded with a lethal 11-1 run highlighted by three straight hammers from Jema Galanza and a Lorie Bernardo rejection on Trisha Genesis for a huge 20-7 cushion. The lefty Bernardo, who is a natural middle blocker, proved she can also deliver as a wing spiker after converting three of their last four points from the opposite side. Galanza top-scored Creamline with 12 points and eight digs while Michele Gumabao and Pangs Panaga chipped in 11 and 10 markers apiece as the veterans led the way in the absence of other starters Bea De Leon, Tots Carlos, and Denden Lazaro. Capital1, who has yet to unveil top rookie pick Bella Belen, relied on Instrella, who tallied seven points laced with four digs. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
