Royel Otis Set August Release for Second Album ‘Hickey'
Indie-pop duo Royel Otis have confirmed their hotly anticipated sophomore album Hickey will arrive on Aug. 22 via OURNESS/Capitol Records. The follow-up to their breakthrough debut Pratts & Pain (2024), Hickey was officially announced on June 24. The album features the single 'Moody,' which was first released on May 9 and teased during a sold-out show in Los Angeles. The track marks a confident return that showcases their distinctive blend of dream-pop hooks, jangly guitars, and melancholic lyricism. More from Billboard Turnstile Soundtrack New Taco Bell Commercial Featuring Tony Hawk Slick Rick Releases Cinematic 'VICTORY' Short Film Starring Nas, Idris Elba & Giggs Tyler, The Creator Hates Your New Podcast: 'We Need Electricians' According to Sydney-based bandmates Royel Maddell and Otis Pavlovic, the album's title was inspired by the emotional intensity of love itself. '…because love bites harder than any other emotion in the world,' they explained in a statement. The album's first single, 'Moody,' was co-written with Grammy-winning songwriter Amy Allen and produced by Blake Slatkin, known for his work with Gracie Abrams, Omar Apollo, and Charli XCX. The track is 'about a girl,' they said simply, letting the emotionally-charged music speak for itself. However, the single has attracted some criticism for its lyrical content. The chorus line, 'My girl's a b–h when she's moody,' was flagged by fans and media outlets as potentially misogynistic. In a statement released via their legal team, Royel Otis responded: 'This song is written from a specific perspective, it is not intended to convey a broader view or standpoint about women in general. We apologise if anyone understood those lyrics otherwise.' Royel Otis first formed in 2019, releasing a series of EPs between 2021 and 2023 before issuing their debut album, Pratts & Pain in 2024. Though their 'Sofa King' track reached No. 12 on the Alternative Airplay chart in 2023, the band found widespread fame last year following their cover of Sophie Ellis-Bextor's 'Murder on the Dancefloor' for Australian radio station triple j's Like a Version series. The cover topped the Alternative Airplay charts and also peaked at No. 41 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. The group's penchant for covers was again felt when their SiriusXM session rendition of The Cranberries' 'Linger' was released, giving them their first appearance on the Hot 100 when it reached No. 94. In late 2024, the duo picked up four ARIA Awards from eight nominations, including Best Group and Best Rock Album. Producer Chris Collins also won for Best Produced Release and Best Engineered Release for Pratts & Pain. Royel Otis are continuing their global ascent in 2025. Following a string of sold-out shows in New York City, Austin, and at home in Sydney, they're heading to Europe for a series of major shows, including an appearance at Glastonbury Festival on June 29. From there, they'll kick off their 'meet me in the car' headline tour across North America. In a recent Rolling Stone AU/NZ interview, the band spoke candidly about their creative process. 'We'll start working on some stuff in early January,' Pavlovic said. 'We've got a little bit of time away to just work on some music. I don't know how anyone has an actual schedule or a routine of how they write songs. We just work together, bounce ideas off each other.' 'It's always different,' Maddell added. 'It's like building a cake.' Morrissey cancels Stockholm show amid burnout and blistering industry betrayal
Legendary rock figure Morrissey has cancelled his much-anticipated concert in Stockholm, leaving fans heartbroken, and not for the first time. The 66-year-old singer, currently touring the UK and Europe, pulled the plug on the June 23 gig at Hovet Arena due to overwhelming exhaustion within his band and crew. Morrissey In Copenhagen… absolutely brilliant gig .. call me biased .. I've been called worse .. a little bit of Everyday Is Like Sunday and How Soon Is Now #Morrissey Morrissey cancels Stockholm amid exhaustion and industry apathy But it was not just fatigue fuelling the decision. Morrissey took to Morrissey Central to air his grievances, revealing a darker, more painful truth behind the cancellation, a complete absence of industry backing. Despite performing in six countries in just one week, the tour's emotional and physical toll has been intensified by what he calls 'zero music industry support.' Morrissey in Copenhagen 21/6/2025 Dreaming of Scandinavia but denied by eeality The singer lamented that although he and his team longed to reach places like Stockholm, Reykjavik, and Helsinki, financial constraints, made worse by being ignored by 'imaginary record labels,' made it impossible. He painted a dismal picture of genuine artistry struggling under the weight of neglect, despite loyal fans waiting in the wings. Fans holding tickets received a message confirming the cancellation and promising refunds, citing exhaustion among the band and crew. Some footage and pics from a cracking gig by Nine Inch Nails in Dublin last night. The visuals and stage presentation were absolutely top tier: a feast for the eyes and ears! The art vs industry war rages on Morrissey remains defiant about the strength of his fanbase. He pointed out that while ticket sales remain strong, his music gets no airtime, and no label will release his material. According to him, this brutal disconnect reveals everything about 'the state of Art in 2025.' The rock icon is still reeling from the fallout with Capitol Records, who shelved his completed album Bonfire of Teenagers following their split in 2022. The record remains unreleased. Longstanding feud with the music machine This feud is hardly new. Even during his time with The Smiths, Morrissey often clashed with record labels. Back then, he slammed Rough Trade for failing to back the band's growing fame. The group eventually disbanded in 1987 amid internal rifts and industry fatigue. Now, as he sets his sights on Berlin, Morrissey continues to fight an uphill battle — one of art versus a tone-deaf industry.

The OUTLOUD festival had options for expansion, but picking Boston was no accident
Advertisement That mission transcends state lines, too. After five previous editions in West Hollywood, Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The fact that Consoletti chose Boston over a larger market like New York City for the festival's East Coast expansion feels like a point of pride (no pun intended) for the community. Consoletti has lived and worked in Los Angeles for the past 20 years, where he runs his live event and entertainment agency JJLA. His roots as an event producer, however, trace back to his childhood in Milford, where he was, he said, 'always looking for opportunities to put on shows' for friends and family. (His first-ever event was a puppet show hosted within his parents' garage around age 4 or 5; it drew dozens of his neighbors, although his parents made him give back the money from his hard-earned ticket sales). Advertisement But Consoletti didn't select Boston strictly as a homecoming. The event producer says the city 'inherently felt like a great next place for OUTLOUD to grow in,' particularly because of the local government's advocacy for queer citizens. In 'Standing up and declaring Boston a sanctuary city for transgender individuals and [ensuring] gender-affirming care aligns greatly with the backbone of what OUTLOUD wants to do as well,' he says, emphasizing OUTLOUD's role as a safe, welcoming cultural experience. Consoletti doesn't envision a third location for the festival – not during Pride month, at least – although he hopes OUTLOUD can expand its Boston edition in future years, either by adding another stage, or making it a two-day event like its California counterpart. Advertisement Another future expansion might take the form of a touring show with 'a consortium of artists' that brings similar music experiences to cities that might have fewer resources and accessible environments for the LGBTQ community. 'Some of our cities of interest are D.C., Philadelphia, Columbus, Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, and Denver – places where [the community] could use some more visible queer representation, and OUTLOUD wants to be that,' Consoletti says. The Beach Boys Almost Hit No. 1 For The First Time Following Brian Wilson's Death
Following Brian Wilson's passing, The Beach Boys score initial top 10 hits on Billboard's Rock ... More Digital Song Sales chart with 'God Only Knows' and "Good Vibrations." American rock group The Beach Boys, 1964. From left to right, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and Brian Wilson. From Capitol Records. (Photo by Gems/Redferns/Getty Images) The Beach Boys are remembered as one of the most successful pop groups of all time, but in some circles, the music the group created has long been classified as rock. That was certainly the case when the outfit first emerged — and it still is today in some respects. The band's music has always straddled the line between pop and rock, and that genre-blurring blend is evident on the Billboard rankings this week. As fans across the United States pay tribute to songwriter and producer Brian Wilson following his passing, The Beach Boys land on one rock tally with multiple cuts. The group nearly secures its debut No. 1 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart this frame, as "God Only Knows" launches at No. 2 on Billboard's list of the bestselling tracks in the U.S. that fall under the rock genre. The band is only kept from the summit by Oliver Anthony Music's "Scornful Woman," which starts its time on the tally in first place. The Beach Boys collect two top 10 hits on the Rock Digital Song Sales ranking this frame, appearing inside the highest tier for the first time. "God Only Knows" debuts at No. 2, while "Good Vibrations" kicks off in fifth place. Two other cuts by The Beach Boys also reach the Rock Digital Song Sales list. At the moment, the legendary act fills more than a quarter of all available spots on the tally. Coming in behind "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations" are "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Sloop John B," which start at Nos. 12 and 13, respectively. The Rock Digital Song Sales chart didn't exist when The Beach Boys first broke out and earned many of the band's biggest wins that are still remembered to this day. This week, the celebrated musical act earns its first four placements on the tally. One additional track by The Beach Boys debuts on a Billboard chart, though not the rock-specific list. "Wouldn't It Be Nice" only makes it to the Digital Song Sales tally, which is not limited by genre. That track opens at No. 18, coming in behind "God Only Knows," which appears at No. 7 on that roster.
