Lord Mayor Nick Reece accused of excessive travel spending as ratepayer costs soar beyond $114,000
Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece is under pressure to explain why ratepayers have been left with a six-figure bill to fund his travel since stepping into the Deputy Lord Mayor role in late 2020, with the expenses now totalling a staggering $114,320.55. An investigation by The Herald Sun into publicly released financial records shows the Lord Mayor's travel costs, including local, interstate, and international trips, which have steadily accumulated over his time in office. Of the overall figure, more than $80,000 has reportedly been classified as 'local travel'. That category includes repeated use of a chauffeur-driven car for trips across Melbourne, a practice critics argue is out of touch in the current economic climate. When pressed to justify the expense or confirm how much was spent specifically on chauffeured services, Mr Reece declined to respond directly. 'The expenses reflect the significant demands on the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor to attend a range of engagements, where they represent and advocate for the city,' a City of Melbourne spokesperson said, defending the spending. International travel was also added to the bill. In 2023, Mr Reece took part in a business delegation to China, visiting Hong Kong, Tianjin, and Beijing. That trip cost ratepayers $16,263.38. The travel tab may not stop there. On Tuesday, Melbourne City Council is expected to vote on another international mission, to cities in China and Japan, that could see another $20,470 added to the ledger. The itinerary includes stops in Chengdu, Nanjing, Tianjin, Osaka, as well as transit through Hong Kong and Tokyo. Ratepayer advocacy group Council Watch has blasted the spending as out of step with public expectations. 'We acknowledge that Mr Reece is an ambassador for the City of Melbourne and this may increase expense more than an ordinary council mayor, however, given the tight economic times, we would urge City of Melbourne to reduce and limit all interstate and overseas travel, and where possible reduce any private car usage,' Council Watch President Dean Hurlston told the Herald Sun. 'The level of spending (on travel) seems excessive. Mr Reece needs to show prudent financial leadership as Lord Mayor.' This is not the first time the Melbourne mayoralty has come under fire for transport spending. In December, former Lord mayor Sally Capp's own hefty use of taxpayer-funded chauffeur services was exposed, with more than $31,000 spent in just one year. Those rides included trips to the 2023 AFL Grand Final, the Melbourne Cup and the Matildas' FIFA World Cup semi-final. In one case, Ms Capp charged ratepayers $93 for a limo ride covering just 650 metres, from Town Hall to the Yarra boatsheds, to announce the Moomba Festival Monarchs. Ms Capp's travel habits stood in stark contrast to a 2018 campaign pledge she made to ditch the Lord Mayor's official vehicle. 'That's why I'll be walking, cycling, using public transport and driving my own car to and from work and official events,' she said at the time. 'I'll still on occasion use a car service, on an as-needs basis, when that is the most appropriate and efficient transport option.'

Downtown Minneapolis hotel reopens after $40 million renovation
A Downtown Minneapolis hotel reopened this week after a $40 million renovation closed its doors for six months. The Sheraton Minneapolis Downtown Convention Center, which sits on the site of the historic Capp Towers Motor Hotel, reopened on Thursday, May 21. Until it was closed in November, the hotel was known as the Millennium Hotel Minneapolis. The 14-story hotel sits at the doorstep of the Minneapolis Convention Center and features 321 guest rooms as well as 19 event spaces, the company revealed in an announcement. It also added a pair of dining concepts and an indoor pool as part of the refresh. The renovation was completed with the architecture and design firm Gensler, which added many new amenities. That includes The Community Table, a communal workspace; The Booths, a series of soundproof spaces for finding some quiet or making calls; and The Studios, bright studios for small group meetings. The new restaurants include Esther's Table, which is named for Esther Capp, the matriarch of the Capp family, which owns and operates the hotel. The Sheraton announcement said the restaurant, helmed by Chef Keven Kvalsten, will focus on seasonal, Midwest-inspired cuisine. Meanwhile, the lobby features &More by Sheraton, which serves an all-day menu that includes coffee and cocktails.

Trucks, dancers, bagpipes, even pugs delight downtown Spokane St. Patrick's Day crowd
Mar. 15—The clouds above downtown Spokane were all bark and no bite, giving way to a dry, but chilly, St. Patrick's Day Parade Saturday. Decked out in green clothing and beads, parade attendees lined the streets on the north end of downtown watching an array of vehicles, floats, dancers and even pugs while listening to the Scottish bagpipe band, Angus Scott Pipe Band, near the front of the procession. Many parade participants passed out candy to children along the curbs while some handed out green-beaded necklaces. Wearing a green top hat with shamrocks on it, Shelli Regis brought her 8-year-old son, Wyatt Capp, to the parade for the first time in about seven years. Capp was too young to remember the first experience, she said. "I thought, why not?" Regis said. "Even if the weather's bad, it doesn't matter. Just wanted to come and celebrate the Irish tradition of St. Patrick's Day." Temperatures stayed in the low 40s as the sun partially poked through the clouds at times. The wind picked up toward the end of the parade. Regis and Capp watched from Spokane Falls Boulevard near O'Doherty's Irish Grille, which was packed with patio patrons. Meanwhile, the Stevens family encountered snow during its hour-plus drive from Palouse, Washington, to watch the parade. "We're kind of dedicated," said Scott Stevens, who attends the March parade with his wife, Mary, and two children, Hudson and Roslyn, each year. The family sat in chairs on Main Avenue near Washington Street. "It's like the spring kickoff," Scott Stevens said. Hudson, an 8-year-old who sported a long, fake orange beard, said he loves collecting candy during the procession. As for his new St. Patrick's Day beard, "I might save it," he said. The Spokane Pug Group, a social group of pug lovers who meet up with other pug owners and their furry friends, was one of the crowd favorites. Drawing several "aww" reactions from attendees, the pugs, some dressed in green, meandered through the downtown streets with their owners. Brandon Leeworthy's 15-year-old pug, Max, who wore a velvet, green St. Patrick's Day-themed coat, enjoyed the parade from a stroller Leeworthy pushed down the street. Jennifer Lusk walked with two of her pugs in the parade. Lusk said the pug group participates in the parade every year. Children are always asking to pet the pugs, she said. "At this point, we've been in it every year, so they know pugs are coming eventually," Leeworthy said of the crowd.
