Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Caregiving for persons with mental health conditions is for the long-haul. Synopsis: Every first Wednesday of the month, The Straits Times helps you make sense of health matters that affect you. Caregivers Alliance Limited is an organisation that focuses on supporting caregivers of persons with mental health conditions as well as those who have developed mental health challenges due to caregiving. It has a small outpost at the Institute of Mental Health, where families can seek caregiver support. In this episode, senior health correspondent Joyce Teo speaks to Ms Evelyn Chng, who is based at the outpost, about the cases that she has seen there, the mental health burden of caregiving, and what caregivers can do about it. She heads CAL's Community Outreach Team or Crest programme. Crest, which acts as a mental health first-stop touchpoint, was developed by the Agency for Integrated Care and the Ministry of Health. Ms Chng also talks about the challenges of caring for her adult son, who is living with obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD. Highlights (click/tap above): Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Forum: Caregiving doesn't have to be a lonely journey

Forum: Caregiving doesn't have to be a lonely journey I refer to the Opinion article by Dr Daniel Fung, 'What happens when families can't cope with caregiving?' (June 19). Caregivers often give their all to support their loved ones, especially at the start of their caregiving journey. But, over time, with recurring crises and no clear end in sight, many find themselves running on empty. All too often, we witness caregivers pushed to their breaking point. Of the 20,000 caregivers that Caregivers Alliance Limited has supported over the years, many are already burnt out or on the verge of it when they come to us. Mental and emotional exhaustion is common, and some develop mental health conditions themselves. Through training and support groups, caregivers can gain vital tools, skills and knowledge. They also realise that caring for themselves is key to their caregiving journey. Many leave our 12-week course or regular support sessions feeling empowered, re-energised and connected to a community that truly understands them. For many, attending these sessions becomes a welcome form of respite. We urge caregivers to tap into such subsidised programmes that can make a difference in their lives and those they care for.
