Andrew Cuomo's first political campaign went as disastrously as his last one did. It was 2002, and Mr. Cuomo was seeking the Democratic nomination for governor. He was 44 and had never held elective office, but at one point he held a double-digit lead over rival H. Carl McCall, a veteran politician 22 years Mr. Cuomo's senior. Mr. McCall, the state comptroller, had the support of establishment figures such as Sen. Chuck Schumer and Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.
