UFC 319 adds Geoff Neal vs. Carlos Prates to Chicago

A welterweight banger that was booked once before is back on the UFC's books. Contenders Geoff Neal and Carlos Prates will square off in a three-round clash at UFC 319, which takes place Aug. 16 at United Center in Chicago, the promotion announced Sunday. Neal (16-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) vs. Prates (21-7 MMA, 4-1 UFC) was previously booked for UFC 314 in April. It was canceled as Neal withdrew for undisclosed reasons. Prates was pushed back two weeks and headlined UFC on ESPN 66 against Ian Machado Garry, who won by unanimous decision. Advertisement The Machado Garry loss was Prates' first in his UFC tenure after a skyrocketing run to contendership that included knockouts of Trevin Giles, Charles Radtke, Li Jingliang, and Neil Magny. Neal has not competed since a 90-second TKO win (due to injury) over Rafael dos Anjos in August 2024. The win bounced Neal back into the win column after consecutive losses to Shavkat Rakhmonov and Machado Garry. With the addition, the UFC 319 lineup includes: Champion Dricus Du Plessis vs. Khamzat Chimaev – for middleweight title Jared Cannonier vs. Michael Page Geoff Neal vs. Carlos Prates Tim Elliott vs. Kai Asakura Edson Barboza vs. Drakkar Klose Jessica Andrade vs. Loopy Godinez Diego Ferreira vs. King Green Bryan Battle vs. Nursulton Ruziboev Gerald Meerschaert vs. Michal Oleksiejczuk JJ Aldrich vs. Karine Silva Alexander Hernandez vs. Chase Hooper This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: UFC 319 lands previously canceled banger: Geoff Neal vs. Carlos Prates

Biggest UFC Heist Incoming: Ian Machado Garry Teases Bold Plans Post Carlos Prates Win (Image Source: Getty Images) Just days after his unanimous decision victory over Carlos Prates at UFC Kansas City on April 26, 2025, Ian Machado Garry has revealed an unprecedented contract clause that could result in 'the biggest heist in UFC history.' Irish welterweight, the undefeated fighter, has secured a backup fighter position ahead of his upcoming UFC 315 title bout, which could see him earn a shot at the title on just two weeks' notice. Ian Machado Garry's strategic contract negotiation opens an unexpected title path Ian Machado Garry disclosed during his appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, "I negotiated it into my contract that when I win, I get the opportunity to go and be the backup," following his dominant performance against Carlos Prates. The 27-year-old fighter explained that his willingness to save UFC cards by accepting short-notice bouts has earned him this rare opportunity. Ian Machado Garry Reacts To DOMINANT Win Over Carlos Prates, Why He Deserves Title Shot Next UFC CEO Dana White confirmed at the UFC Kansas City post-fight press conference that Ian Machado Garry will in fact be the official backup for the welterweight championship bout between Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena, which takes place May 10, 2025, at UFC 315 in Montreal, Canada. 'Could anybody slip up? If so, what would the world look like?' He is seen as it would be the biggest heist in UFC history, fighting twice in 14 days, and the possibility of UFC gold. Welterweight division tensions rise as Joaquin Buckley's confrontation adds to the storyline Following UFC Kansas City fight week, the welterweight landscape has become increasingly convoluted with an altercation between Ian Machado Garry and fifth-ranked contender Joaquin Buckley. Buckley made an appearance at Garry's weigh-in and is said to have approached the Irishman's family, causing a tense situation. Ian Machado Garry commented that Joaquin Buckley's actions were just desperation. "So he can't do stuff he does, he can't generate enough talk about himself, so he has to try and piggyback off other people." Although Ian Machado Garry is acknowledging physical soreness from his recent five-round contest, he is confident he will be able to compete at UFC 315 if called upon. But the welterweight contender also predicted that current champion Belal Muhammad will beat Della Maddalena and then go on to challenge himself in the future. UFC 315, featuring a welterweight title fight between Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena, will be live on pay-per-view on May 10, 2025. Prelims will be on ESPN+. UFC's Stephen Thompson calls out Carlos Prates: 'It will be a striking extravaganza'

UFC's Stephen Thompson calls out Carlos Prates: 'It will be a striking extravaganza' Stephen Thompson wants to test his striking against Carlos Prates. Prates (21-7 MMA, 4-1 UFC) suffered his first octagon loss when was defeated by Ian Machado Garry in Saturday's UFC on ESPN 66 headliner at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo. Prates hurt Machado Garry late but was outstruck overall and taken down four times in the fight. Thompson (17-7-1 MMA, 12-7-1 UFC) called out Prates in typical respectful fashion and sees a fight between them delivering on the feet. "It will be a striking extravaganza, if you will," Thompson told MMA on SiriusXM. "Ian Garry, he's good at the grappling, he's good at the wrestling. We are good at it to try to keep the fight standing. Me and Prates, we want the fight to stay standing. We want to see who the best striker is in the UFC. "I think that would be an amazing fight, as well. I'm all for it, to be honest with you. Carlos Prates, will you please sign the contract. Just sign the contract. Get out there, let's have some fun, let's put on a show, let's punch each other in the face, and go have a beer afterwards, maybe a few cigarettes on your part." "Wonderboy" is no stranger to outclassing rising contenders on the feet. He successfully stood toe-to-toe with the likes of Vicente Luque, Geoff Neal and Kevin Holland. However, in his most recent outing, Thompson was knocked out by Joaquin Buckley at UFC 307 last October.
