Yankees believe Jose Trevino ‘contributed' to Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s ejection, get revenge

CINCINNATI — Before Wednesday's game against the Reds, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked what he thought of catcher Jose Trevino saluting his former teammates with his walk-up songs in back-to-back days. In the first game of the series, Trevino's walk-up song was 'Hello' by Pop Smoke, the same song Aaron Judge uses at Yankee Stadium. Judge loved it and tipped his cap toward home plate when he realized what Trevino had done. Advertisement On Tuesday, Trevino's walk-up song was Carlos Rodón's warm-up song, 'Rooster' by Alice In Chains. The question to Boone was meant to be a lighthearted moment toward a player who was a big part of the Yankees over the past few seasons as an All-Star and Platinum Glove Award winner. 'I'm a little down on Trevy right now,' Boone said. 'I think he contributed to the (Jazz Chisholm Jr.) ejection, too. I think he got Mark (Wegner) looking in that direction.' In the moment, it seemed like Boone was being sarcastic. But once the cameras were off, Boone was serious. The Yankees believed Trevino egged on Wegner before he threw Chisholm out of Tuesday's night's game. YES Network had video of Trevino standing in the Reds' on-deck circle speaking with Wegner and pointing in Chisholm's direction. Chisholm was still frustrated with himself for striking out in his previous at-bat, after feeling like he was robbed on a missed call that could have changed the outcome. With Chisholm yelling at himself, Wegner ejected him from across the field, believing his anger was directed at him because of Trevino bringing awareness to him. 'I thought he wanted to talk to (Wegner),' Trevino said. 'I thought he was trying to get his attention, so I was just helping him out.' Chisholm got his revenge Wednesday night. In the third inning, the Yankees' third baseman blasted a 433-foot homer deep to right field off Reds starter Brady Singer, which gave New York a 3-0 lead at the time. After Chisholm touched home plate, he turned to Trevino and had a few friendly words for him. 'He was the one who kind of provoked the umpire for all that to happen, so I just told him that was for last night,' Chisholm said with a smile. Trevino also did not take exception to Chisholm firing back in a friendly manner. 'I was his teammate. I'm not going to fight the guy,' Trevino said. 'It's baseball. I don't know what kind of answer you want me to say or anything like that. I was his teammate, so… I don't have anything against him. I think he's a good player.' Advertisement Chisholm became aware that Trevino was an instigator when he walked into the Yankees' clubhouse Wednesday afternoon and they had the video waiting for him to watch. He wasn't upset that his former teammate ratted on him; he called it 'pretty funny,' but he wasn't going to let it slide, either. Boone said before Wednesday's game that he spoke with the league office and Chisholm about the ejection, and he still believed that what transpired Tuesday did not warrant his third baseman getting tossed. But Boone also acknowledged that getting Chisholm to not let the umpires affect his game remains a work in progress. 'Jazz is an emotional guy,' Boone said. 'I think he understands and tries to rein that in some. That's still a work in progress. I think he understands how much we're all counting on him in that room to be able to stay in certain games. 'But that being said, I think there's a pretty strong case he should not have been thrown out of that game based on pretty much everything he did not say and really wasn't arguing a pitch. But we've got to move on from it, and hopefully grow from it.' The Yankees salvaged the series against the Reds, 7-1, and remain one game up in the American League East over the Tampa Bay Rays. New York will have an off day on Thursday after playing 16 straight games, which they finished 7-9. 'I think everybody's gonna sleep 14 hours, especially me,' Chisholm said. The Athletic's C. Trent Rosecrans contributed to this report.

Try it free CINCINNATI — Carlos Rodón cruised for six innings and got enough help from his offense to leave with a three-run lead. Then Jonathan Loáisiga quickly erased it, setting up another brutal extra-inning loss by the end of the night. The Yankees finally scored in extra innings as the road team for the first time this season, but it still was not enough as they suffered a 5-4 loss to the Reds in 11 innings on Tuesday at Great American Ballpark. Gavin Lux delivered the walk-off single against Mark Leiter Jr. in his second inning of work to sink the Yankees to 1-6 in extra innings this season. With the Yankees bullpen nearly empty, Leiter came back out for the bottom of the 11th after holding the Reds at bay in the bottom of the 10th. He had thrown 27 pitches on Monday night, but the Yankees had already used Loáisiga, Fernando Cruz, Luke Weaver and Devin Williams (for only nine pitches) to get through the ninth. Ian Hamilton had thrown 34 pitches on Monday, Tim Hill had pitched on back-to-back days and JT Brubaker, the former starter who warmed up in the top of the 11th, had pitched two innings on Saturday. Aaron Judge had given the Yankees a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th, taking third on a groundout and then scoring on a wild pitch. 4 Christian Encarnacion-Strand, hitting a single in the third inning, later hit a three-run double in the seventh inning to help propel the Reds to a 5-4, 11-inning comeback win over the Yankees on June 24, 2025. Katie Stratman-Imagn Images But the Reds quickly tied it in the bottom of the 11th as Elly De La Cruz hit an infield single and Spencer Steer followed with an RBI single. In the top of the 10th, the Yankees loaded the bases on a pair of two-out walks for Judge, who popped out to end the threat. After Weaver handled the eighth inning, Williams threw a nine-pitch bottom of the ninth. 4 Aaron Judge hits a single in the fourth inning of the Yankees' 11-inning loss to the Reds. Katie Stratman-Imagn Images The Yankees have not asked Williams, who threw 14 pitches on Sunday, to record more than three outs in any of his 33 appearances so far this season. The Yankees became shorthanded in the ninth inning when Jazz Chisholm Jr. was ejected before the bottom of the frame for arguing a called first strike from the top half. The third baseman was upset about the call in the moment and went on to strike out, then continued to voice his frustration as he took the field for the bottom of the ninth, which led to him getting tossed by home plate umpire Mark Wegner. 4 Yankees starter Carlos Rodón held the Reds scoreless over six innings, but had to settle for a no-decision. Katie Stratman-Imagn Images Aaron Boone had to hold Chisholm back from Wegner before he left the field, and then more Yankees had to intervene once Chisholm got back to the dugout. Rodón scattered just four hits and one walk while striking out five across six shutout innings. He retired the final eight batters he faced to get through the sixth inning on 88 pitches. 4 Reds rookie Chase Burns allowed three runs in five innings in his MLB debut. Katie Stratman-Imagn Images It marked the fewest pitches he has thrown in a start this season, though the brutally hot day — it was 91 degrees at first pitch — may have had something to do with that.
