Shots fired in Parkland Monday afternoon after deputies pursue man on foot

Shots were fired at a suspect in the 11200 block of C Street South in Parkland Monday afternoon, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded at 4:21 p.m. to a report of a man who was allegedly involved in previous burglaries breaking and throwing objects, and then trying to light a building on fire, according to sheriff's office spokesperson Carly Cappetto. Deputies confronted him at the Pacific Pride gas station in the 110th block of Pacific Avenue South and pursued him on foot for a few blocks to the area of 112th Street South and C Street South, where deputies said shots were fired, Cappetto said. She said she believes deputies 'were OK' but didn't immediately have the status of the suspect when The News Tribune reached her shortly before 6 p.m., while she was driving to the scene. The Pierce County Sheriff's Office posted on X that the Pierce County Force Investigation Team will be in charge of the investigation. The post asks people to stay out of the area. 1 dead in Pierce County from high-speed crash during pursuit by deputies

A high-speed wreck during a pursuit by sheriff's deputies left one person dead over the weekend in the Parkland area. Deputies were patrolling the area June 14 at around 3:30 a.m. when they saw a driver in a vehicle going at high speed and driving 'recklessly' in several lanes. A pursuit then began, Sheriff's Office spokesperson deputy Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune via email. The driver could not turn a corner as they approached the Roy Y at state Route 507 and Pacific Avenue South and crashed into the Park-in-Ride. Two passengers were in the car with the driver, Cappetto said. Two people were extricated by firefighters. The third passenger, a female, was declared dead, she said. Cappetto could not confirm the gender of the driver and second passenger nor their ages. It is unknown the conditions of the driver and passenger after they were taken to the hospital. Cappetto also said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol involved, pending the investigation. 'This is an active investigation and charges for the driver are being forwarded to a prosecutor for vehicular homicide and vehicular assault and potentially more felony charges once the investigation is complete. Any additional information will be provided after the investigation is complete and a charging decision is made,' she said.

Woman doused in gasoline by boyfriend armed with gun, Pierce County deputies say

A 53-year-old man is suspected of dousing his girlfriend with gasoline and pointing a gun at her near Spanaway. Deputies were dispatched at around 6:30 p.m. Monday to the 19600 block of Canyon Road East where the woman was living at a camp in the woods, the Pierce County Sheriff's Office wrote in a news release. Deputies found the woman in a tent and said she told them she had been covered with the gasoline, according to body camera footage. Two dogs appeared to be with her that also had gasoline on them. The gasoline burned the woman's skin and left her in discomfort, Sheriff's Office spokesperson deputy Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune. She was offered medical attention, water to get the gasoline off her body and a change of clothes. 'Once deputies found the victim, they knew they had to locate the boyfriend since he was armed and dangerous. K9 Clark and his handler were called to the scene to begin the search for the suspect,' the release said. 'You need to come out now, before my dog finds you and when he does he will bite you,' the handler was heard saying in the body-camera footage. The K-9 spent over 30 minutes combing through the thick woods and rough terrain to find the man, the release said. He found the sawed-off shotgun that the man allegedly pointed at the woman. The dog also found the man near a small body of water. The man was booked into the Pierce County Jail. Before he was booked, fire personnel treated him for a K-9 bite. Prosecutors charged him with first-degree animal cruelty, felony harassment, two counts of second-degree assault, first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a short-barreled shotgun, court documents show. A plea of not guilty was entered on the man's behalf during his arraignment Wednesday, documents show. Pierce County Superior Court Commissioner Barbara McInvaille set the man's bail at $125,000. The release said a large portion of calls that deputies are dispatched to regard domestic violence. 'For domestic violence resources and help, contact the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center to speak with an Advocate (253) 798-4166, or visit their website at Pierce County Family Justice Center, WA | Official Website,' the release said.

Child, 7, fires BB gun at windows of Pierce County elementary school, deputies say

Brookdale Elementary School in Parkland was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after a child shot BBs gun through the windows. Deputies were dispatched at 9:08 a.m. to the 600 block of 132nd Street South for reports of shots fired and a teacher saying two windows were shattered, Pierce County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune. People in the area were interviewed, and deputies checked the area, Cappetto said. Once it was determined the shots came from a nearby home, deputies contacted the homeowners, she said. They learned their 7-year-old son had shot his BB Gun Glock replica towards the school. The child was gifted the gun from a family member and thought it was a 'toy.' No one was injured and no arrests were made. Deputies took in the BB gun for evidence, Cappetto said. The investigation will be forwarded to the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for review. 'The Pierce County Sheriff's Office is seeing more and more of these types of 'replica' BB guns with high velocity C02 cartridges. These are not toys and should not be in the hands of children,' she said. Cappetto cited an incident in May 2024 when 51-year-old Rickey Albers was shot and killed by a pellet gun in the Graham area. His girlfriend, Nicole Lynn Johnson, was charged in his death and pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in February. She has been sentenced to two years and nine months in prison, The News Tribune reported.
