Wexford community raises over €4000 to send water trucks to the people of Gaza
The BBQ took place on Saturday, June 21 in the Kiltealy community hall with a total of €4,202 raised. A buffet and BBQ of Palestinian cuisine was made available for an entrance fee of €15 and a raffle was also held on the night.
The idea was formed by Carmen Sanchez, who originally questioned whether a food fundraiser was the right avenue to raise much-needed funds.
"At one point I asked myself: is it ethical to organises a Palestinian food fundraiser while people in Gaza are suffering? When I shared this doubt with a Palestinian friend, her response was clear and powerful: 'Carmen, Israel uses food as a weapon. By honouring our culture and using food to help us, you're standing with us. Every small act of solidarity means everything in these dark times,'' she said.
"We had a fantastic night and loved hosting all the wonderful people who came to enjoy our Palestinian food. Your solidarity made it possible!' she added.
A representative of the organisers as a whole expressed their heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to getting water delivered to Gaza.
"Whether you attended, donated, helped organise, or contributed in any way, your support was truly appreciated. The kindness and community spirit shown on the night was remarkable and will make a meaningful difference,' they said.
"Thank you all for standing in solidarity and making this event a success. Water will be delivered to Gaza in two weeks' time. A video of the deliver will be on Instagram which can be viewed on Gaza Go Bragh page,' they added.
