UK's Somerset Defence Textiles boosts capacity with plant extension

A SOMERSET-BASED industrial textiles firm has expanded into new facilities. Needles and Pins Aerospace – a female-led, family-run firm – has unveiled an expanded production facility in Somerton. And to launch the new facilities, the company welcomed figures from across the aviation and defence sectors, staff, customers and suppliers to its Somerton Business Park headquarters. Somerset-based Needles and Pins Aerospace has expanded its Somerton facility, marking the milestone with a ribbon-cutting led by Director Carole Champion. The female-led firm, which supplies Boeing and Leonardo, plans a further 25 per cent workforce growth by end-2025, including apprenticeships. The event celebrated team efforts, supplier support, and renewed focus on UK defence manufacturing. Director Carole Champion led the ceremony, cutting the ribbon, with a pair of scissors used to cut the first piece of material for the company back in July 2018 – owned by recently-retired general manager, Jean Spearpoint. 'This is a proud and significant moment in our journey,' Carole said. 'It's a celebration of our incredible team, the support we've had from customers and suppliers and a statement of our confidence in the future. 'With renewed focus on defence and British manufacturing, the opportunities ahead are exciting.' Needles and Pins Aerospace designs, manufactures and repairs bespoke protective covers, acoustic insulation and interior soft fittings for military and civilian aircraft, working with the likes of Boeing Defence UK and Leonardo, which has a plant in nearby Yeovil. Carole was joined by her son, Dillon Harmon, chief operating officer, who spoke of the company's growth and shared the team's plans, including further investment in people, processes and technology. The business has grown its workforce by 25% in the past year, with another 25% increase planned by the end of 2025, including the creation of two new apprenticeship roles. Steve Burnell, managing director of Boeing Defence UK , was among guests at the opening of the extended facility and said: 'At Boeing, we are committed to strengthening the UK aerospace industry by investing in local talent and fostering partnerships with innovative SMEs like Needles and Pins Aerospace. 'We're delighted to share in this milestone and support their continued growth.' Will Kate Middleton's Parents Get Titles Once She's Queen?

Kate Middleton is poised to become Queen of England (okay, technically Queen Consort, but that's a whole thing), and her family will get an even bigger spotlight. While Kate's parents, Carole and Michael, already spend their time hanging with aristocrats—including princes, princesses, dukes, earls, and duchesses,—their official titles at the moment? Simply Mr. and Mrs. Middleton. And if you're wondering whether or not that'll change once Kate levels up to Her Majesty, the answer Just because their daughter will be Queen, doesn't mean the Middletons automatically get titles. This is because they weren't born into the royal family. On top of that, most "lesser" titles (like Earl and Duke) are passed down generation-to-generation, going back hundreds of years. However... It's uncommon, but fresh titles have been handed out in the past. For example, Prince Harry was made Duke of Sussex when he married Meghan Markle. That title was first created in 1801, "lapsed" in 1843, and wasn't revived until Queen Elizabeth II dusted it off to give to Harry in 2018. As for how many similarly lapsed titles are sitting around ready to be used, there appear to be several—the "Duke of Cumberland," for example. But granting a title to the Middletons would certainly be unusual, and there's no real precedent for titling a royal in-law since they're usually titled to begin with. That said, it's also possible that an entirely new title could be made up. Back in 2013, the Daily Mail speculated that Michael Middleton could be named Earl of Bucklebury, and noted that "the only other non-titled grandpa in the past millennium, the father of Edward IV's wife Elizabeth, also had an earldom bestowed on him." More recently the Daily Mail claimed that "insiders say this is more likely to happen when William becomes king." But even if that happens, she won't get a title. We know this thanks to Queen Camilla, who has six ladies-in-waiting that she calls "companions." They include Sarah Troughton, Fiona the Marchioness of Lansdowne, Lady Katharine Brooke, Baroness Carlyn Chisholm, Lady Sarah Kewick, and Jane von Westenholz. While a few of them clearly started the "job" with a title, the ones who didn't have yet to get one. One of Camilla's ladies in waiting, Sarah Troughton, was given a Royal Victorian Order in 2025 for service to the monarch, which makes her an official Dame. So, there is a world where Carole could be awarded for her service and be known as Dame Middleton, but again, this is all just speculation. On that we'll see what happens!
