Panthers announce CB change in roster move on Friday
The Carolina Panthers made a swap in their secondary on Friday. As announced this afternoon, the team has signed cornerback Mello Dotson. Fellow corner MJ Devonshire, who sustained a hamstring injury during the first week of training camp, has been waived-injured to make room on the roster. Dotson, a Daytona Beach, Fla. native, spent his five-year collegiate career at the University of Kansas. He was named a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2024, where he tallied a conference-leading five interceptions and an FBS-leading two interception returns for a touchdown. After going undrafted this past spring, Dotson signed on as a free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders. The 6-foot-1, 192-pounder would then be waived on July 22. Like Dotson, Devonshire got his NFL start in Las Vegas. The two-time second-team All-ACC member was selected by the Raiders in the seventh round of the 2024 draft. Devonshire found his way to Carolina on April 28, when the Panthers claimed him off waivers from the Raiders. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

Adam Thielen reacts to Chad Johnson's very bold tweet about Panthers' WRs
Do the Carolina Panthers suddenly have the NFL's best receiver trio? Well, one former (and very good) wideout thinks that could be the case. Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson certainly knows a thing or two about catching passes. He did so at the highest level for over a decade—notching seven 1,000-yard campaigns, two first-team All-Pro nods, six Pro Bowl selections and a spot in the Cincinnati Bengals Ring of Honor in the process. And Johnson, who has seemingly become a rather staunch supporter of what's cooking in Carolina, tweeted out an interesting thought regarding the Panthers' triplets on Wednesday . . . Part of that trio, veteran Adam Thielen, was asked about Johnson's post after Friday's walkthrough at training camp. "I did see it. Ocho's my guy," Thielen replied. "We had a nice conversation last year in Vegas before the game. I can't remember exactly who was talkin' about us not being a great group. So I think he might've been in on that. So I think he started to see the game and, obviously, at the end of the year and then, obviously, our additions in that room." The end of the year saw the 34-year-old Thielen reel in 40 receptions for 506 yards and four touchdowns over the team's final seven outings. That 2024 season was also the first for first-round pick Xavier Legette, who did flash at times—even despite an overall underwhelming year. As for the "additions," none were bigger, literally, than the 6-foot-4, 219-pound Tetairoa McMillan. McMillan, a consensus All-American at the University of Arizona, was taken by the Panthers with the eighth overall selection of the 2025 draft. So if Ocho is onto something (and quarterback Bryce Young continues to hum), then the Panthers may have themselves a great group after all. There is one very glaring omission from Cam Newton's list of the NFL's top 10 QBs
The reigning Super Bowl MVP is not one of the NFL's top 10 quarterbacks, at least according to Cam Newton. On the latest episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers legend gave his thoughts on ESPN's list of the game's very best passers. In fact, he even offered up a top-10 list of his own . . . One pretty glaring omission from the list was Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts, who has recently been compared to Newton in some spirited debates between fans. Newton explained why he didn't include the dynamic, dual-threat Super Bowl champ. "Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback. Do not get that twisted," Newton stated. "But if we're talking about what they bring to the table, it's hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you're throwing to a guy like A.J. Brown, Devonta Smith. When you have a tight end skill set, you have a dominant defense, you have the best running back [Saquon Barkley] in the game." Despite the accolades—the Lombardi Trophy, the two Pro Bowl selections and the second-team All-Pro nod—the 26-year-old Hurts is one of the more polarizing players in football. And some, like Newton, believe Hurts has greatly benefitted from what might be the most talented roster the NFL has seen in quite some time. Regardless, Hurts has only played the hand he's been dealt—and he's played it well. In his four years as Philly's full-time starter, he's averaged 4,096.3 total yards per season while tallying 131 total touchdowns. His 55 career rushing scores account for the third-most all-time by a quarterback. Newton still ranks No. 1 on that list with article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers great Cam Newton omits Jalen Hurts from his top-10 QB list

Panthers great Cam Newton goes scorched earth on celeb detractors amid Jalen Hurts debate
Carolina Panthers great Cam Newton just hit the nuclear button. The franchise's all-time leading passer and former NFL Most Valuable Player had received a bit of criticism after not including Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts on his recent list of the game's top 10 quarterbacks. Newton, however, believed that some of the backlash was too pointed and too personal. So, he took out a little time this week to respond to the detractors—including ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, Ryan Clark and Dan Orlovsky, Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Owens and rapper/Eagles superfan Gillie Da Kid. Strap in . . . To Newton's point, he did not disparage Hurts for his talents and abilities under center. In fact, he praised the reigning Super Bowl MVP. Here's what Newton said of Hurts during that July 17 episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton: "Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback. Do not get that twisted," he stated. "But if we're talking about what they bring to the table, it's hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you're throwing to a guy like A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith. When you have a tight end skill set, you have a dominant defense, you have the best running back [Saquon Barkley] in the game." Newton's list went down as follows: Despite his reasoning, the debate got turned up to a pretty spicy level—as is often the case in today's media landscape. Oh, and when you have Newton in the mix, well, it's bound to get even spicier. So, that's what y'all wanted to see, huh? Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

Panthers release LB Josey Jewell in stunning move
The Carolina Panthers chalked up a big loss on their defense this afternoon. On Tuesday, the Panthers announced they have released starting inside linebacker Josey Jewell. Per the team's official statement, the 30-year-old defender is still experiencing concussion symptoms from this past season's Week 16 win over the Arizona Cardinals, played on Dec. 22, 2024, and wishes to prioritize his health and recovery. Jewell, after spending his first NFL six campaigns as a member of the Denver Broncos, signed with the Panthers last offseason on a three-year, $22.75 million deal. He went on to start in each of his 12 games for Carolina—amassing 97 combined tackles, 3.5 sacks, an interception and two fumble recoveries. Without Jewell, the projected starters at the inside linebacker position are now 2024 third-round pick Trevin Wallace and fifth-year veteran Christian Rozeboom. Rozeboom, who tallied 135 tackles and 11 starts for the Los Angeles Rams in 2024, signed a one-year deal with Carolina in the spring. According to the Panthers, Jewell could return to the team at some point in the article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers release LB Josey Jewell in stunning move
