Report: Airport lights, weather may have contributed to deadly San Diego plane crash
Weather and malfunctioning airport equipment likely played a role in the crash of a private plane in San Diego last month that killed six people, including a prominent musician. File Photo by Caroline Brehman/EPA-EFE June 20 (UPI) -- Weather and malfunctioning airport equipment likely played a role in the crash of a private plane in San Diego last month that killed six people, including a prominent musician. The Runway Alignment Indicator or RAI lights were out of service at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport when the Cessna S550 carrying Devil Wears Prada drummer Daniel Williams crashed, according to the preliminary report released by the National Transportation Safety Board. A notice to fliers issued by the Federal Aviation Administration meant pilots should have been aware the RAI lights had been out of service since March 28, 2022, according to the report. Weather conditions meant only a half-mile of visibility with a 200-foot ceiling at the time of the deadly crash on May 22. "The controller informed the pilot that the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) at MYF (Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport) was out of service and the pilot acknowledged that he was aware of that," the report reads. "The pilot then discussed alternate airport weather conditions with the controller in the event he had to perform a missed approach. He stated he would notify SoCal TRACON (air traffic control) of his selection of an alternate airport, but did not do so during the remainder of the flight." Music agent Dave Shapiro was among those killed and was reportedly flying the plane, which requires only one pilot. Eight people on the ground suffered minor injuries when the small twin-engine jet crashed near a military housing neighborhood. More than 20 vehicles also were damaged. The report also indicates the plane was flying too low, with a flight level of approximately 1,190 feet roughly 2.9 nautical miles from the public airport, which is located six miles north of downtown San Diego. The plane initially struck power lines when it was between 90 and 95 feet above the ground. Most of the wreckage was located 200 feet from that point of contact, with the entire debris field strewn over more than one mile, according to the NTSB report. The Cessna S550 or Citation II can carry up to seven passengers and was first introduced 1978.

'We don't want them here' Los Angeles mayor says of Guard troops
Protestors rally in Los Angeles amid enforcement raids by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents. Photo by Caroline Brehman/ EPA-EFE. June 15 (UPI) -- Mayor Karen Bass said Sunday that Los Angeles does not need National Guard troops to bolster city police amid protests against raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, despite the gatherings turning violent in recent days. "We don't want them here," Bass said on CNN's State of the Union. "They don't need to be here. Our local law enforcement have complete control of this situation." President Donald Trump deployed thousands of U.S. National Guard soldiers to Los Angeles to assist ICE with immigration raids of locations that were suspected of employing or harboring undocumented migrants. Last week, U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer ruled that Trump must return control of the situation to the Los Angeles Police Department, and that Trump's deployment of the troops was unconstitutional. But hours later, a federal appeals court panel lifted Breyer's order, allowing the soldiers to continue to assist in the immigration raids. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has also been critical of Trump's troop deployment and said the president overstepped his bounds without first seeking input from state or local officials. Newsom called Trump a "stone cold liar" in response to the president's comments that he consulted the California governor before deploying the soldiers. Immigration raids continue. However, Trump has appeared to be moderating on targeting some workplaces, including some farms, meatpacking plants, hotels and restaurants. Amid the backdrop of the raids and protests, thousands of people rallied in the streets Saturday to protest Trump's policies that his critics have called authoritarian. The "No Kings" rallies took place in cities across the country at the same time that the U.S. paraded high0end military equipment through the streets of Washington in an event that was estimated to cost as much as $45 million. Saturday was also Trump's 79th birthday.

Static interference forced United Airlines to disable Starlink service
United Airlines has suspended its Starlink Wi-Fi service on two dozen regional airliners to fix static interference that occurs while the system is in use, the airline confirmed on Friday. File Photo by Caroline Brehman/EPA-EFE June 7 (UPI) -- Free Starlink internet service on some regional United Airlines flights has been suspended due to static interference. The airline began offering free Starlink Wi-Fi service during flights in May, but static interference forced United officials to turn off the service on about 24 airliners, the Wall Street Journal reported. The airline is working with Starlink to correct the problem, which it says does not affect flight safety. "We expect the service to be back up and running on these aircraft soon," United officials said. "The fix will be deployed during routine maintenance, and the airline doesn't anticipate any impact on flight schedules." The problem was first revealed by The Points Guy, which reported the issue commonly occurs when new onboard connectivity technologies are installed on aircraft. United installed the Starlink service on about two dozen regional aircraft but received reports of static interference while the Wi-Fi service was used. A similar problem arose when United Airlines installed its Viasat connectivity service on its main air fleet. A quick fix solved the problem. Starlink is a subsidiary of the Elon Musk-owned SpaceX and uses a global network of small satellites to provide subscribers with Wi-Fi service anywhere in the world.
