Official: Álvaro Carreras is Back at Real Madrid

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Spanish left-back Álvaro Carreras from Benfica for €50 million, making it the club's fourth signing of the summer. The 22-year-old joins on a six-year deal, with Real Madrid activating his release clause without entering formal negotiations. The club moved swiftly to secure Carreras, who has impressed with his recent performances in Portugal. A product of Madrid's La Fábrica academy, Carreras was part of the youth system between 2017 and 2020 before leaving for Manchester United, where he did not make a senior appearance. He gained first-team experience during loan spells at Preston North End and Granada, before joining Benfica in 2024 – initially on loan and later permanently for around $7 million. Carreras made 32 appearances and scored three goals last season, helping Benfica to a second-place finish in the Primeira Liga, and was also part of the Club World Cup squad in the US. Madrid paid the full release clause for several reasons: his Spanish nationality benefits the squad under La Liga's non-EU player rules, and the club's current left-backs, Fran García and Ferland Mendy, have been struggling with injuries. Benfica confirmed that: 'Manchester United will be entitled to receive a 20% capital gain on the transfer of the aforementioned player.' Tags: Álvaro CarrerasBenficaReal Madrid

Real Madrid sign their former youth player Carreras from Benfica

Ammon News - Real Madrid have signed defender Alvaro Carreras from Benfica, the LaLiga club said on Monday, marking a return to the Spanish side for the 22-year-old after he previously spent three years at Real's academy. The Spanish left back, who played at the recent Club World Cup, has signed a six-year contract, for a reported fee of 50 million euros ($58.31 million), according to Spanish media. He becomes Real's third defensive signing during the close season, after Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen, as they look to strengthen a department which has suffered several injuries in recent seasons. Carreras left Real for Manchester United in 2020, mainly appearing with their Under-23 side, and while the Spaniard did receive call-ups to the senior squad he never made a senior appearance at the Premier League club. He had loan spells at Preston North End and Granada, before another loan move brought Carreras to Benfica in January 2024, making his debut for the Portuguese club one week later. Carreras made 11 league appearances for Benfica in those first few months in Portugal, and the club signed him on a permanent deal from United at the end of the season. Reuters

How much Man Utd will make from Real Madrid signing Alvaro Carreras

Alvaro Carreras has completed his move from Benfica to Real Madrid and Manchester United are set to cash in as a result. The 22-year-old will be unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Tuesday afternoon, returning to the club after spending three years in the youth set-up with the Spanish giants. The full-back left Real Madrid for Manchester United in 2020, but failed to make a senior appearance for the Red Devils. After loan spells with Preston and Granada he joined Benfica on loan and then made that transfer permanent last summer after an impressive start to life in Portugal. The transfer proved to be a bargain for Benfica, spending just £5m on the Spaniard, who would go on to make 52 appearances and score four goals last season. United were linked with a move to re-sign him in January this year after his eye-catching performances and Real Madrid were certainly impressed as they have now signed him for €50m (£43m) and handed him a six-year contract. While Carreras may seem like one that got away at Old Trafford, Manchester United will at least earn a decent amount of money from his big move to the Santiago Bernabeu. When the Red Devils sold the left-back to Benfica they inserted a sell-on clause in the deal which sees them receive 20 per cent on any profit made on Carreras. With Benfica selling Carreras at a profit of around £38m, Manchester United are owed 20 per cent of that sum, which will see them pocket around £7.6m. Not a bad windfall on a player who made it to the bench for Premier League matches but never got on the pitch in a first team game for the Red Devils. This will be the second time this summer that Manchester United have cashed in on one of their former players making a big-money move. Newcastle have signed Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £52million with a further £3million in add-ons. The Red Devils sold the winger to Forest in the summer of 2023 for £15m, deeming the Sweden international to be surplus to requirements. Elanga has been impressive since making the switch to Forest and has earned himself a return to the Champions League with the Magpies. More Trending Manchester United included a 15 per cent sell-on clause when they sold Elanga, which will see them earn around £6m from the profit Forest have made on him. The income is a boost for the club as they look to revamp Ruben Amorim's squad this summer, which is proving difficult. Matheus Cunha from Wolves remains the only major signing so far this summer, while Paraguayan teenager Diego Leon has also arrived from Cerro Porteno. He also featured regularly in the Champions League and was part of their Club World Cup Madrid have paid 50 million euros (43 million pounds) to secure his return — a deal that will also benefit Manchester United, who are entitled to 20% of the profit made by Benfica on the arrives as part of a major defensive rebuild led by new manager Xabi Alonso. The Spanish coach, now at the helm following Carlo Ancelotti's exit, has already brought in Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold to reshape the backline after a frustrating 2024–25 campaign. Madrid ended the season without a single trophy, missing out on LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions Ferland Mendy battling fitness issues and Fran Garcia struggling to make the position his own, Carreras was Alonso's top target to fill the void at left-back. A Spain U21 international with high-level European experience, he's seen as someone who can not only slot into the lineup immediately but also grow into a key figure over the long term.- Ends
