Sask. RCMP lay second-degree murder charge after death on Red Earth Cree Nation

An 18-year-old man from Red Earth Cree Nation has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 29-year-old Gerald McKay. On June 24, Carrot River RCMP responded to a report of an injured individual in a home on the community, RCMP said in a news release. Arriving officers located McKay, who was pronounced dead at the scene. RCMP say McKay's death was considered suspicious and its major crime unit began an investigation. As a result, Cecil Whitehead, 18, was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder. Both men hailed from Red Earth Cree Nation. Whitehead is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Carrot River on Thursday, June 27. Red Earth Cree Nation is located about 225 kilometers northeast of Prince Albert.

An RCMP detachment can be seen in this file photo. (David Prisciak/CTV News) Saskatchewan RCMP have charged a woman after a child died on Shoal Lake Cree Nation late last week. Following an investigation, police have charged 23-year-old Karrena Young with one count of manslaughter. She made her first appearance in provincial court in Melfort on Monday. On Friday, May 23, at around 7 p.m., officers with Carrot River RCMP were called to the community following a report of a child under the age of 10 being seriously injured. Police found the child inside a home in the community. Despite officers attempting life saving measures – the victim was declared dead at the scene. The death was determined to be suspicious and RCMP Major Crimes took over the investigation. A suspect was identified and taken into custody shortly after. RCMP confirmed that the victim and the suspect were known to each other. Police continue to investigate.
