'We see his deep love for music': New series featuring late Liam Payne released by Netflix
"Through his presence, we see his deep love for music." Those are the words of Backstreet Boy AJ McLean in a special, albeit short, tribute to Liam Payne right at the start of Building the Band, a new Netflix series which features the late One Direction star. McLean hosts the series, which has drawn criticism in recent months after bosses decided to go ahead and release the programme, less than a year after Liam's death. The first three episodes were aired on Wednesday. Appearing as a guest judge on the music reality show, Payne actually filmed some of the scenes just weeks before his death in October 2024. Many questioned the taste and decency behind ploughing ahead with its planned broadcast, but it is apparent that Netflix has attempted to do some potentially insensitive, in the most sensitive way possible. The 31-year-old featured heavily in the Building the Band trailer, with musicians competing against one another to form their own group. The episodes are being released in batches and we understand Liam won't appear properly until Episode 7. The star is said to have given insight into the triumphs and challenges of being in a band as well, as giving honest musical criticism to the artists. Netflix said that Payne's family "reviewed the series and is supportive of his inclusion". His sisters have previously both posted on social media about the posthumous appearance of their brother. Nicole Payne wrote: 'Watching this over the past few months has given me/us a way to still feel close to you and see you at your best and I'm so glad the world gets to see it all now too." While, Ruth Gibbons said: "There are a range of emotions I felt watching this, but one of the main ones is immeasurable pride always." There would, of course, have been greater controversy around the series had Liam Payne's family been against its airing, but there will still be some who feel uneasy at the idea of his inclusion nearly nine months after his death. Payne died after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. and 'internal and external haemorrhage' after falling from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. A court in Argentina dropped charges in February of criminal negligence against three out of the five people who had been charged in connection with his death. In 2008, he auditioned for The X Factor as a 14-year-old, with judge Simon Cowell telling him to return to the talent show two years later. In 2010, he impressed the judges before being put together with four other solo hopefuls - Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson - at the boot camp stage of the competition. The group later became One Direction. After his band went on hiatus in 2015, Payne released a debut solo album LP1 in December 2019, which included the songs Polaroid with Lennon Stella and Jonas Blue, and Strip That Down featuring Quavo, as well as the track For You with Rita Ora. Payne had a son with former X Factor judge Cheryl Tweedy, with whom he was in a relationship between 2016 and 2018.

Liam Payne features as guest judge in new music competition trailer
The late singer appeared in the series trailer for Building the Band, where he took on the role of a guest judge. The star, best known for being one of the five former members of One Direction, died in October, aged 31, after falling from a third floor balcony at a hotel in Argentina. A post-mortem examination report said Payne died of multiple traumas and 'internal and external haemorrhage' after falling from a balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. Prior to his death he had filmed for the new competition series which has been described as a 'music experiment' as 50 singers must form a band without seeing or meeting one another. Listening to each performance through individual booths, only six bands will make it out where they will then meet their fellow bandmates and faced with the obstacle of managing personalities, choreographies and style ahead of the live performances. Payne appeared in the trailer as a guest judge alongside Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland, host AJ McClean, and mentor Nicole Scherzinger. In the trailer, he is seen giving feedback to the contestants and says: 'I need to feel that connection between you guys.' Payne was formed into One Direction in 2010, alongside Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles, after they individually auditioned for The X Factor. They became one of the biggest pop groups in the world, with five albums and four world tours, until they went on indefinite hiatus in 2016. Payne went on to launch his solo career and released his debut solo album LP1 in December 2019. The album included the songs Polaroid with Lennon Stella and Jonas Blue, Strip That Down featuring Quavo, as well as the track For You with Rita Ora. Building The Band will premiere on Netflix on July 9.

Major update in Liam Payne death investigation with trial date set
Two men accused of supplying drugs to former One Direction singer Liam Payne just hours before his fatal fall from a hotel balcony will face trial, Argentinian prosecutors have confirmed. Braian Nahuel Paiz, 25, a restaurant waiter, and Ezequiel David Pereyra, 24, a former hotel employee, have been in custody since early January. They stand accused of selling cocaine to the British musician, who died on October 16, 2024, after falling from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. The Little Things hitmaker was a beloved UK musician after rising to fame alongside his former bandmates Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles on The X Factor in 2010. In a statement released by Argentina's public prosecution service, Prosecutor Andrés Esteban Madrea confirmed the pair would go to trial, facing potential prison sentences of up to 15 years if convicted of drug trafficking offenses. 'Braian Nahuel Paiz, who met Payne while working as a waiter in Puerto Madero, and Ezequiel David Pereyra, a former employee at the hotel where the incident occurred, are charged with the crime of selling drugs,' the statement read. Forensic investigations revealed Payne had consumed cocaine through both snorting and smoking shortly before his death. An autopsy showed he died from severe polytrauma and internal and external bleeding, and toxicology reports detected a combination of substances in his system, including cocaine, alcohol (at 2.7 grams per litre), methylecgonine, benzoylecgonine, cocaethylene, and the antidepressant sertraline. 'The toxicological analysis confirmed Liam Payne had ingested cocaine at least 72 hours before his death and possibly as recently as a few minutes before falling from the hotel balcony,' authorities said. Three other individuals initially charged in connection with Payne's death – his close friend Rogelio Nores, hotel receptionist Esteban Grassi, and head of hotel security Gilda Martin – were cleared of wrongdoing after an appeal overturned a lower court's manslaughter accusations. No date has been set for the trial of Paiz and Pereyra, but proceedings are expected to begin soon. More Trending Speaking from his Buenos Aires jail cell in an interview with local outlet Infobae, Paiz denied selling cocaine to Payne, though he admitted to having shared drugs with the pop star. 'I don't know what I'm doing here, I'm a good person,' he said. 'I shared drugs with Liam but I didn't sell them.' The young waiter described himself as a longtime marijuana user and expressed regret over the connection he formed with Payne. 'I regret giving Liam my Instagram because everything spiralled from there,' he said. 'If I hadn't, I'd probably be working or studying today. I miss my freedom, my family, my mom, and my sisters.'
