Cathay Pacific has been named the third best airline in the world
The 2025 World Airline Awards recently took place at the Paris Air Show, and Hong Kong's air carriers have done us proud. Out of more than 325 global airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways has been ranked third in the world's top airlines of 2025. This year, our city's flag carrier has risen up the ranks from fifth spot in 2024 – and was also crowned first place for the World's Best Airline Inflight Entertainment and the World's Best Economy Class. Additionally, Cathay also won third place for the World's Best Cabin Crew, the World's Best Business Class, and the World's Cleanest Airlines. Basically, we have an amazing economy class and entertainment for the everyman, as well as a top-notch business class, all tended by friendly and attentive crew members, within some of the world's cleanest planes. Sounds like a great deal. Apart from Cathay, some of our other flight carriers also did well at the awards. Hong Kong Airlines ranks at number eight for the World's Best Regional Airlines, while HK Express ranks at number three on the list of the World's Most Improved Airlines. On the World's Top 20 Airlines in 2025 list, Qatar Airways was crowned number one, followed by Singapore Airlines, a carrier which had previously won the top slot five times – these two airlines have been consistently jostling for number one and two on this list since 2017. Cathay Pacific, Emirates, and ANA All Nippon Airways round off the top five airlines of this year. Widely regarded as the 'Oscars of the aviation industry', the World Airline Awards is an independent and impartial ranking organised by airline and travel research consultancy Skytrax, and has been running since 1999. Alden Richards calls out an airline for damage to his bike
Alden Richards took to social media to call out Cathay Pacific for the damage to his bike frame on his flight to the Philippines. On Instagram, Asia's Multimedia Star shared a photo of the damage and said "Shoutout to [Cathay Pacific] for fracturing my bike frame and unloading my bike box and bike rack on my way home to the Philippines." "This is very upsetting!" he added. Alden has been dedicated to cycling as of late. In May, he completed a 61-kilometer bike ride. His post has also been reshared by fellow Kapuso artist and bike enthusiast Kristoffer Martin. According to a representative from Cathay Pacific, the airline is aware of Alden's case and is currently investigating. GMA News Online will update this post with Cathay's statement as soon as it is made available. Where to find glimpses of art deco architecture in Kowloon, Hong Kong
A precise birth date for art deco is hard to pinpoint, but the term came into common parlance following the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, France, making this year the centenary of one of the most distinctive architectural styles. Cities that embraced the innovations of the early 20th century, in industry, finance, fashion and the arts, likewise embraced art deco in their architecture. In the booming metropolises of New York and Chicago, as well as more established cities such as Bombay, London and Paris, new constructions in stainless steel, aluminium, ferro concrete, marble and plate glass soared skywards, with sleek, smoothed edges, and decorated with geometric forms. In East Asia, Shanghai is the best known and largest repository of art deco buildings, but examples can also be found in Tokyo, Singapore, Tianjin, Guangzhou and, if you know where to look, Hong Kong The prestigious King George V School in Ho Man Tin is a prime example of Hong Kong's art deco architecture. Photo: SCMP Archive The British colony was neither an early nor prolific adopter of art deco. Most examples here were built in the late 1930s, such as the frontage of King George V School in Ho Man Tin. While one of two great picture palaces, the Majestic Theatre in Jordan, opened in 1928, the other, the Cathay in Wan Chai, came more than a decade later, in 1939. Both are now demolished. Much else came post-war, such as the Star Ferry terminals (an example of Streamline Moderne, a late variation of the art deco style), as well as the pier constructed in 1979 at Hung Hom. The 1937-built Maryknoll Convent School, on Waterloo Road, features distinct art deco influences alongside those of Gothic Revival, Neo-Georgian and Romanesque. Local architecture firm Little, Adams and Wood seem to have been conflicted between the early 20th century fads among British university and school architects for Tudor and Gothic Revival and the more recent popularity of art deco. Well maintained, Maryknoll may be a bit of an architectural mash-up, but it still functions brilliantly as a school building, with a large assembly hall, classrooms flooded with natural light and colonnaded walkways. Photo: SCMP Archives At the busy junction of Prince Edward Road West and Yuen Ngai Street, where most people blithely rush past, heads bent over phone screens, is a surviving example of Kowloon-side art deco. Built by Belgian construction company Crédit Foncier d'Extrême-Orient (CFEO) in the 1930s, the cluster of apartment buildings and ground-floor retail premises at 190-220 Prince Edward Road West was designed as 'modern flats' for middle-class families, with shophouses and a shady colonnade at street level. The building is replete with art deco features, from the cantilevered balconies that overlook Yuen Ngai Street to the floor-to-ceiling windows that allow daylight to spill in and the recurrent wave pattern on the exterior of the colonnade pillars and stairway frontages that take their inspiration from traditional Asian imagery.

Cathay Pacific, HK Express surpass 100 global passenger destinations, investing over HKD100B in upgrades
Cathay Group hits 100 passenger destinations milestone Cathay Pacific and HK Express have collectively achieved a milestone of 100 global passenger destinations , according to the Cathay Group. The announcement was made during a cocktail reception at Island Shangri-La in Hong Kong, celebrating the network expansion reached earlier than expected. Mable Chan, Secretary for Transport and Logistics of Hong Kong, noted that this achievement reinforces Hong Kong's status as a global aviation hub. 'As Cathay hits the magic 100, so too does Hong Kong International Airport and Hong Kong as an international aviation hub reach unprecedented heights,' she said. Also read: World's safest airlines for 2025 The growth is supported by the implementation of the Three-Runway System , commissioned in late 2024, which has enabled a significant rise in passenger traffic, cargo volumes, and flight movements at Hong Kong International Airport. Live Events Cathay Pacific Chairman Patrick Healy stated that the group has expanded rapidly in the past two years, adding 30 new destinations, 18 of which were introduced in 2025. 'That rate of network expansion is at an unprecedented level for Cathay, and that has allowed it to reach this milestone of 100 destinations ahead of schedule,' Healy said. Cathay invests HKD100 billion in fleet and services The Cathay Group is currently undertaking its largest investment initiative, valued at over HKD100 billion. This program covers upgrades to its fleet, cabin interiors, airport lounges, and digital platforms. Healy emphasized the importance of this investment in aligning with the infrastructure improvements at Hong Kong International Airport. 'Cathay has to continue to invest and it is important that it takes full advantage of the new Three-Runway System,' Healy said during the event. The investment supports Cathay's long-term strategic goal of maintaining its competitiveness and enhancing passenger experience as it grows its global footprint. The current expansion is one of the most rapid in the airline's nearly 80-year history. The airline recorded a short-selling volume of HKD52.32 million, with a short-selling ratio of 34.825 per cent as of June 13, 2025. 2025 events at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Sports Park, from National Games to Football Festival
Hong Kong's Kai Tak Sports Park has been notching up firsts since its main stadium was officially opened in March, and the milestones are set to continue during 2025. More than 42,000 spectators shared the euphoria of watching the city's footballers beat India at Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday, in the first outing at the venue by the Hong Kong representative team. The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens was staged at the stadium for the first time in late March, by which time the HK$30 billion (US$3.9 billion) park had already hosted international 15-a-side rugby at its 5,000-seat sports ground. Photo: Reuters Elite-level snooker came to the indoor Kai Tak Arena, which can hold up to 10,000 people, for March's World Grand Prix. Here is a selection of what is still to come this year. National Games of China Hong Kong will co-host the 15th National Games with Guangdong and Macau from November 9 to 21, with three of its seven medal events – rugby sevens, fencing and men's handball – to be held at Kai Tak. The sevens will be held at the 50,000-capacity Kai Tak Stadium from November 12 to 14, after handball takes over Kai Tak Arena from November 1 to 10.
