Dozens left stranded by Hong Kong's Cathay after flight from New York cancelled

Dozens of angry passengers were left without accommodation after Cathay Pacific Airways cancelled a flight from New York to Hong Kong at the last minute because of a 'technical issue', the Post has learned, and the airline must now submit an investigation report to aviation authorities. The cancellation, which was announced to affected passengers an hour after flight CX843 was scheduled to depart at 1.55am (New York time), left passengers scrambling to find hotels without any offer of support from the airline, according to affected users on social media. They were later told to board another flight a day and a half later. The Civil Aviation Department (CAD) told the Post this week that Cathay had notified it about the incident and would 'submit an investigation report in accordance with the reporting system under the Air Navigation (Hong Kong) Order 1995.' The regulation outlines a mandatory reporting system for incidents and occurrences related to aircraft operations in Hong Kong, requiring airlines to report specified incidents to the CAD within 96 hours. 'The CAD will continue to closely monitor the operating and maintenance standards of our local airlines to ensure that the relevant safety standards and requirements are met,' it said. Images posted by an angry passenger on Chinese social media platform RedNote showed dozens of customers surrounding Cathay staff at John F. Kennedy International Airport's gate counter in New York and inquiring about the flight last Saturday.

Image: Supplied In celebration of World Environment Day, the Miss Earth South Africa programme made significant strides in community engagement with a hands-on tree planting and vegetable garden project at Zodiac Primary School in Lenasia. This vibrant initiative not only aimed to enhance the school environment but also sought to instil a sense of environmental responsibility among the Grade 3 learners, planting the seeds of sustainability in the hearts of the youth. Transforming a once-barren corner of the school grounds, the project flourished into a lush and educational space. With the collaborative efforts of partners such as Cathay Pacific, Skin Renewal SA, Samsonite, 9Five Fertilizers, Wild Route, 3Sixty Compost, and the Toyota Knights, the children engaged in a meaningful greening activity that left a tangible impact on their surroundings. According to Ella Bella Leite, Director of the Miss Earth South Africa Leadership and Empowerment Programme, "Our goal is to plant more than just trees and vegetables; we're planting seeds of hope, knowledge, and responsibility. Together with our partners, we're showing learners what it means to care for the earth and for each other. It's about People and Planet. This garden is an example of how environmental action and social impact go together, reminding us of all that by investing in the youth and their home, we are able to nurture a better future for everyone." In tackling food insecurity within the community, each planted seed is a step towards a healthier, more self-sufficient future. The event buzzed with energy and enthusiasm as learners eagerly participated alongside volunteers and representatives from partner organisations. Equipped with tools and guided by their mentors, the children embraced the learning experience, acquiring practical skills that would serve them well into adulthood. The hands-on experience allowed them not just to contribute to a greener school but also to connect deeply with the cycles of nature and their impact on the planet. With cheers, laughter, and a collective sense of purpose, the day exemplified how interactive learning can inspire young minds and foster a commitment to sustainability. The vegetable garden stands as a testament to the power of community and collaboration, uplifting the spirits of the future generation while paving new pathways toward environmental stewardship.

Middle East conflict hits global aviation, Hong Kong routes unaffected

Almost 5 per cent of international flights to the Middle East have been cancelled this month due to the escalating Israel-Iran conflict, which has made the region more unstable after the US bombarded key Iranian nuclear sites and Tehran vowed to defend itself. According to data from aviation analytics company Cirium, 1,552 out of 32,583, or 4.76 per cent of scheduled flights to Dubai, Tel Aviv, Doha, and Abu Dhabi worldwide were cancelled this month. There had been no cancellations of flights between Hong Kong and the Middle East in June, according to Cirium spokesman Mike Arnot. He noted that aircraft from the city typically flew over Myanmar and India, avoiding the conflict zones. He said there was currently a twice-daily service by Emirates between Dubai and Hong Kong, while Qatar Airways had a similar schedule between the city and Doha. Cathay Pacific continues to fly to Dubai and Riyadh. This month, 164 flights were scheduled from Hong Kong to Doha, Dubai, and Riyadh, according to data from Cirium. Cathay Pacific accounted for 44 of these flights to Dubai and Riyadh, while Emirates and Qatar Airways each operated 60 flights to Dubai and Doha, respectively. Emirates are still operating a twice-daily service between Hong Kong and Dubai. Xia can take them back to Beijing, using this rise in the rankings as evidence that the world's perception of the city is improving and the pendulum is swinging back in its favour despite the persistent challenges posed by geopolitical developments This shift is the result of more than work done by the government. Not only has Cathay Pacific made a remarkable recovery since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Cathay Group – which includes the budget airline HK Express – celebrated the milestone of reaching 100 passenger destinations around the globe this month. 10:38 The headwinds holding back Cathay Pacific's post-pandemic recovery The headwinds holding back Cathay Pacific's post-pandemic recovery It is easy to forget the Hong Kong government no longer has a stake in Cathay Pacific, one of the most compelling success stories in the city.
