Brad Waters' horses to follow and forgive from Caulfield on Saturday
Form expert Brad Waters runs his eye over Saturday's meeting at Caulfield, finding five horses to follow and some to forgive from the card. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! â– â– â– â– â– FIVE TO FOLLOW SHAHAR (6th of 12, Race 1): The Amy and Ash Yargi-trained youngster trialled well leading up to her debut in which he drew the outside barrier. The draw forced jockey Daniel Moor to take Shahar to the back of the field where she raced wide. Shahar lost her way on the home turn and did plenty wrong in the straight before getting her act together and making late ground. She can improve significantly with race experience. Sonofkirk came from nowhere to win the opener at Caulfield! He is one to follow ðŸ'° @JyeMcNeil @FreedmanRacing — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 XARPO (1st of 10, Race 2): Horses that race near the speed and show plenty of fight are always worth following and Xarpo is one of those horses. The Simon Zahra-trained filly won a couple over the summer, including a race at Flemington, and returned with a game win in soft ground. Her racing style means she can win another race or two in the coming weeks. It was all happening there 🫣 Always Enuff wins it in a blanket finish as the two favourites finish at the tail end! @lil_spaino96 @shanenicholsrac — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 HERBERT PARK (3rd of 12, Race 6): The Tony Noonan-trained mare stepped up in class at Caulfield on Saturday and didn't have a lot of luck in the straight when beaten less than a length. She raced midfield to the home turn but raced tight for most of the straight before being crowded on the line. That was her second run this time in and looks ready to win on soft or heavy ground. The Matt Laurie-trained five-year-old rolled to the lead but was no match for more talented rivals in the last 200m, fading to finish fourth. Saturday's race was his third run in and he looks ready to win something a shade easier on rain-affected ground. RHEINBERG (4th of 10, Race 9): The Lindsay Park-trained Rheinberg had every chance to win at Caulfield but finished fourth, a half length from the winner. However, he showed he was ready to break through again with his effort. He challenged the leaders early in the straight and looked set to draw clear but he peaked on his run in the last 100m second-up. He'll be much fitter for that outing and can finish the job in the coming weeks. YELLOW SAM ON THE LINE 😲 It took every inch of the straight but Yellow Sam got there! What a way to finish the day at Caulfield! @FKersley — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 â– â– â– â– â– PLEASE FORGIVE: BETWITCHERY (6th of 10, Race 3): Betwitchery went down narrowly after leading at Sandown but was never a chance at Caulfield after racing at the back of the field. Betwitchery lost concentration in the gates and was slowly away, losing all winning chance. She's worth another chance when she next appears. Xarpo sticks the neck out and wins! Ryan Houston on the board for Simon Zahra ðŸ'°ðŸ'° @szahraracing — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 JUST FOR SHOW (5th of 11, Race 4): Started as the $3.30 favourite but his backers were out of business soon after the start when Just For Show was slow to begin from a tricky draw. He was never going to win the race but might have finished a bit closer had apprentice Luke Cartwright decided to track through on the inside on the home turn. Harry's Yacht sails away ⛵⛵ Jye McNeil has an early double! @JyeMcNeil — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 THE BLACK CLOUD (2nd of 12, Race 6): The Black Cloud was a beaten $2.80 favourite but was far from disgraced. She pushed forward and worked to share the lead to the home turn before boxing on gamely in the straight until claimed by the winner Sixteen Reasons, who had a 3.5kg weight advantage. NEXT BEST THE BLACK CLOUD (R6 No.3): Sydney sprinter The Black Cloud made a pleasing return with a close second at Canterbury and just needs to go on with it now. His last win was a year ago at Flemington but he has been contesting stronger races, including a couple of Group 3s. VALUE BET LIM'S SALTORO (R9 No.3): Ex-Hong Kong galloper Lim's Saltoro should be ready now third-up in an open race. Ciaron Maher colt Oyster Lane has speed to make winning debut at Caulfield
Oyster Lane has the speed to make up for inexperience on Saturday at Caulfield in the 1000m 2YO Handicap. The smooth-moving Blue Point colt, trained by Ciaron Maher, is a $4.60 equal second favourite with last start winner Hello Romeo. Sonofkirk, placed third on debut behind the smart Miss Ole and Espana, is the $3.90 favourite. Jockey John Allen has completed most of the education work on Oyster Lane, including three trials. 'He looks like a nice progressive horse, shown plenty at the trials,' Allen said. 'I suppose he's got to go and do it race day now. 'A little bit unknown but fairly hopeful he can run well.' Oyster Lane was spelled after placing second in his first trial at Cranbourne last February. The $80,000 Karaka yearling won a trial at Ballarat last month and repeated the effort with a strong 800m Cranbourne hit-out on June 16. • Carly Thomas can enjoy day to Remember at Caulfield Allen gave Oyster Lane a squeeze at Cranbourne and the colt responded in kind, stretched out nicely to put a margin on the opposition. 'He's always naturally gone quite well but he seems to have improved with every trial,' Allen said. 'He's got to take the next step at the races… I took him off the bridle to teach him a little bit. 'He does feel like a nice horse… he feels pretty sharp.' Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said Oyster Lane has progressed nicely and benefited from the recent Cranbourne experience. 'He's done nothing wrong in his education,' Turnbull said. 'He trialled down at Cranbourne to have a look down there, a trip away, and he went pretty well … he was at Ballarat but being a colt he gets a bit lairy. 'We shifted him around, which is great we're able to do that with our facilities, I think that trip away really brought him on. 'Johnny kept him up to the task to the line, hence the margin in the trial, which wasn't the plan but (Allen) said post trial he felt to be better educated he wanted to keep him up to the mark.' Allen has four rides at Caulfield on Saturday, including Flamin' Romans (race 5), Earlswood (R8) and Running By (R9). Maher-trained Running By, an $8 chance, has drawn poorly in barrier 14 but should be ready to peak third-up. 'She's building towards running a nice race I reckon,' Allen said. 'I haven't ridden her yet this prep but I've galloped her, I reckon she came back in good condition so it might've taken those couple of runs to top her off.' Earlswood, trained by Gavin Bedggood, is expected to be competitive also in the 2000m Quality Handicap.

On The Punt: Caulfield best bets for Saturday May 31, 2025
News Corp form analyst Chris Vernuccio takes a look at the Caulfield meeting on Saturday. â– â– â– â– â– BEST BET NIANCE (R8 No.7): Niance won both starts last spring, including the Group 3 How Now Stakes over subsequent Group 1 placegetter She's Bulletproof. The five-year-old mare missed the autumn after a paddock accident but has looked sharp in her trials. She has the talent to measure up in better races. NEXT BEST JIMMY THE BEAR (R6 No.3: Jimmy The Bear made a great return at Caulfield when he chased home War Machine, who has since won again and is now the favourite for the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap. The Patrick and Michelle Payne gelding has excellent second-up form with two wins and two seconds from four runs, and he has three wins at 1600m. BIG SWINGER (R3 No.1): Three-year-old Big Swinger thrashed his rivals first-up in a Benchmark 64 at Pakenham before stepping up to the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint where he finished a close fifth as favourite.

Quadzilla, Four-Play: $200 betting strategy for Caulfield May 31, 2025
News Corp racing reporter Gilbert Gardiner gives his $200 betting strategy and quaddie analysis for the Caulfield meeting on Saturday. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! â– â– â– â– â– $25 each-way EXCESS (2) at $7.50/$2.60 Deep in campaign but raced consistently with runs nicely spaced. Won a similar race last start at The Valley, travelled on speed and kicked to hold a margin on the runner-up. Drawn to low here and should get a similar map, albeit tougher to lead all the way here. Placed in two of three starts at Caulfield, only blemish came three runs back when crossed from wide draw to travel on speed and faded late. Fitness edge on key rivals. Excess charges home to win the third at The Valley for Julius Sandhu and @beau_mertens! — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) April 26, 2025 $50 win BIG SWINGER (1) at $2.50 Smart three-year-old gelding with still untapped potential. Drawn to be prominent in barrier two and should be extremely hard to hold out. Completely luckless last start in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint and yet only beaten 1¼ lengths at Randwick. Six weeks between runs a slight concern but Big Swinger looks well placed in this company. Include JUST FOR SHOW (3) in any exotics. A model of consistency and should once again be around the mark. Enriched gets there in the G2 Arrowfield Sprint for @MFreedmanRacing and @TommyBerry21! ðŸ' @aus_turf_club | @WorldPool — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 12, 2025 RACE 7: BENCHMARK 84 HANDICAP (2000m) $50 win BOARDRIDER (13) at $4.40 Well up in grade but weighted to be very competitive with only 51kg on his back. Drawn low and has the benefit of rising star apprentice jockey Logan Bates in the saddle. Boardrider should be ready to fire now third-up after two solid performances at Bendigo and Cranbourne respectively. Opened $6 in the market but straight into $4.40 rock solid since. First time at Caulfield and 2000m but pedigree suggests the distance should be no issue. $50 win NIANCE (7) at $2.40 Graduated to stakes grade last campaign with back-to-back Listed and Group 3 successes to build a record of six wins and a second from only 10 starts. Upside galore still and in most astute hands of trainer Grahame Begg. Drawn out but has speed to land in a good spot and should be too classy first-up despite a number rivals being race fit. RECOMMENDATION (1), also fresh, a track and trip specialist more than capable here. QUADZILLA LEG 1 – RACE 6 JIMMY THE BEAR (3) motored late first-up at Caulfield to run second behind the in-form War Machine. A repeat performance has the consistent performer, an eight-time winner from 34 starts, right in the frame here. Ticks every box. VERDAD (7) has won two of his past three and should again be up in the firing line somewhere. Singapore expat LIM'S SALTORO (4) should benefit from a solid fifth placing in his Australian debut behind War Machine last start. Include MILFORD (6) to cause a boil over. 1ST LEG: 3, 4, 6, 7 What a super win! War Machine gives @lindsayparkrace a treble! @jamieleemott — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) May 10, 2025 LEG 2 – RACE 7 BOARDRIDER (13) has been set a task, well up in grade and distance, but with no weight on his back should more than competitive. The Clinton McDonald-trained Preferment gelding has two solid runs under the belt and pedigree to handle the 2000m test. WONDER KID (4) won a similar race last start and must be respected again. MIRZANN (12) should be better for the run first-up and suited at 2000m. Include DUBLIN JOURNAL (6). 2ND LEG: 4, 6, 12, 13 LEG 3 – RACE 8 NIANCE (7) has won six of 10 starts to date, including Listed and Group 3 fillies and mares-restricted sprints last campaign. Up against the boys here but more than capable and should be able to improve her win record again. RECOMMENDATION (1) is a definite threat, with strong stats across the board – track, distance, class, conditions and first-up. AVIATRESS (4) raced well last start in similar company at Flemington and has won at Caulfield before. 3RD LEG: 1, 4, 7 Niance wins the last at Caulfield! ðŸ'¥ @JChilds47 @Grahame_Begg — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) November 16, 2024 LEG 4 – RACE 9 HEARCOMESTHESTAR (13) drawn poorly raced in great heart the past two starts at Caulfield and Flemington. Will need luck but more than capable. DIRTY GRIN (1 6) has won three of his past four starts and should somewhere in the finish again. PRANCING SPIRIT (5) has the right form, held on to beat the progressive Winnasedge last start, to go back-to-back at Caulfield. 4TH LEG: 5, 13, 16 COST $100 FOR 69% SKINNY QUADDIE Start with JIMMY THE BEAR (3), LIM'S SALTORO (4) and MILFORD (6). In the second leg take WONDER KID (4) and BOARDRIDER (13). Then in the third leg take RECOMMENDATION (1) and NIANCE (7). Come home with PRANCING SPIRIT (5), HEARCOMESTHESTAR (13) and DIRTY GRIN (16). 1ST LEG: 3, 4, 6 2ND LEG: 4, 13 3RD LEG: 1, 7 4TH LEG: 5, 13, 16
