Harangi dam committee decides to release water for kharif crops

Madikeri: The Irrigation Consultative Committee of the Harangi dam decided to release water for kharif crops. During a meeting of the panel at the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam in Bengaluru, it was decided to extend the water for agricultural purposes. A decision was made in the meeting to release 300 to 500 cusecs of water from the dam to the canals in the first phase. Harangi dam division executive engineer IK Puttaswamy said that 300 to 500 cusecs of water will be released to the left and right bank canals. Water will also be released to fill up the lakes. The meeting was attended by Kodagu district minister NS Boseraju, Madikeri MLA Manthar Gowda, MLA from Arkalgud A Manju, and MLA from KR Nagar D Ravishankar. Meanwhile, the state govt has accorded administrative approval to projects costing Rs 36.5 crore for the construction of an arch bridge near Hulugunda village in the Harangi basin and Rs. 49.9 crore for the development of the left bank canal of the Harangi reservoir. The proposal was submitted by Manthar Gowda, which was approved by the cabinet. Manthar Gowda said he submitted a proposal to the water resources department. He said there was a need to construct a bridge in Hulugunda. When the outflow from the Harangi increased, a flood situation arose in this area and affected the lives of the people. The govt's attention was drawn to provide a permanent solution to this, he said. The dam's left bank canal development will benefit farmers at the tail end, he said.

Illegal mining near Harangi Dam poses threat

Madikeri: Harangi Dam, one of Karnataka's major reservoirs, is reportedly facing a threat due to illegal mining activities occurring near its limits. Residents of Kushalnagar taluk have filed complaints regarding these illicit operations, which have also resulted in the clearing of valuable trees across acres of land. Residents express fear that continuous human interference in this vulnerable area could lead to a disaster and are urging authorities to take immediate action against the illegal mining. Chandramohan, convenor of the Kaveri Swachata Andolana, stated, 'Huge loads of mud are regularly transported on the Harangi Dam road, and the increased truck traffic is damaging the road. Furthermore, just 200 to 300 meters from Harangi Dam, valuable trees have been cleared over acres of land to facilitate mining activities.' He added that despite this widespread illegal activity, no official has taken any action. He explained that valuable trees, including rosewood, sandalwood, and other old trees, have been illegally felled without the permission of the concerned authorities. He also expressed concern that the increasing interference with the land by those extracting soil is likely to endanger the safety of the reservoir. Resident Shekhar said, 'Mining activity is being carried out without any fear of officials. No official seems to be aware of this large-scale illegal activity. The road constructed by the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam from Harangi Dam to the village is being completely damaged due to the movement of heavy machinery and trucks carrying goods.' He noted that a huge hill is being excavated with Hitachi machines just 200 to 300 meters on the left side of the dam, and thousands of loads of soil are being illegally transported, yet officials from the concerned departments have reportedly taken no action. When questioned about the matter, Kushalnagar Taluk Tahsildar Kiran G. confirmed that the issue would be investigated. E.E. Puttaswamy of the Harangi division stated, 'We have received complaints about the activities happening near the reservoir. The Minor Irrigation, Revenue, Forest, and Mines and Geology departments will soon inspect the site. An inspection will be conducted, and appropriate action will be taken.'

KRS dam struggles with safety, sanitation issues amid tourism plans

Mandya: While the Karnataka govt is keen on launching tourism development projects worth hundreds of crores at the iconic Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam, even amid opposition from various organisations, the basic infrastructure at the site tells a different story. The dam, which draws thousands of tourists daily, is plagued by inadequate safety measures and poor sanitation facilities. One of the most critical concerns is the lack of proper fencing. On the right side of the entrance — just before the ticket counter — there is no fencing at all, and on the left, the existing fence is damaged and poorly maintained. This poses a serious safety risk to the large number of visitors, especially during weekends and holidays. Equally concerning is the condition of the public restrooms. The existing facility is not only insufficient for the high footfall but is also unhygienic, leaving many tourists disappointed with the overall experience. Despite the significant revenue generated from tourism at KRS, these basic amenities have been overlooked. While large-scale projects are in the pipeline, tourists and local residents stress that govt should first prioritise essential infrastructure. V Karthick, a tourist from Shivamogga, said, "There is a lot of scope for improvement and development of KRS dam. I hope the authorities, instead of spending money on unwanted and irrelevant projects, spend money on providing basic facilities to tourists, including much-needed restrooms and shelter rooms." Speaking to TOI, Jayanth, executive engineer, Cauvery Neeravari Nigam, which manages the KRS dam, said, "Fencing on both sides will be taken up at the earliest. As for the restroom facilities, we currently offer them free of cost, but we are planning to implement a pay-and-use model similar to what exists at Chamundi Hills to improve hygiene and maintenance." He said though this was initially part of the Cauvery Aarti project, they have now decided to prioritise it and take it up immediately. They are also working on other measures to improve the upkeep of the KRS dam. "Discussions have already been held, and necessary steps will be implemented soon," he said. Until then, however, the disconnect between ambitious tourism plans and on-ground realities continues to cast a shadow over the experience at one of Karnataka's most popular tourist destinations. Rs 540 cr project in Mandya to quench thirst of 4 taluks

Mandya: Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar on Monday laid the foundation stone and conducted an on-site inspection for a Rs 540-crore drinking water supply project aimed at providing a long-term solution to water scarcity in neighbouring Ramanagara district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The ambitious project will source water from Cauvery River at the Sattegala Barrage near Belakavadi in Malavalli taluk, Mandya district. Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony, the DCM offered prayers at Hirena1garadamma Temple. Speaking at the event, held near the Sattegala dam, Shivakumar underscored the significance of the project, which is designed to channel water through a gravity-fed system to the Iggaluru barrage. The initiative, spearheaded by the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam, will benefit the taluks of Ramanagara, Kanakapura, Magadi, and Channapatna. A key highlight of the project is the construction of an 11-km tunnel near Sattegala, which will serve as a vital conduit for transporting water to the target areas. Shivakumar inspected the ongoing tunnelling work and stressed its importance in ensuring a consistent and reliable water supply. Shivakumar noted that the project was originally conceptualised during his earlier tenure as minister for water resources, but faced delays due to land acquisition challenges. These issues, primarily involving local farmers, are now resolved with appropriate compensation measures. With the hurdles cleared, Shivakumar announced that the project is on track for completion by Dec this year. During the event, local residents and priest of the Chikka Marigudi Temple submitted requests for temple and road infrastructure improvements. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Responding positively, Shivakumar instructed officials to integrate these development works into the broader scope of the project. The ceremony was attended by former MP DK Suresh, MLAs CP Yogeshwar and Kadaluru Uday, and senior district officials from Mandya.
