Milwaukee police officers ambushed in alley shooting, suspect on the run

Two Milwaukee police officers were shot Thursday in an ambush-style attack, and the suspect is still on the loose. One of the officers is in critical condition while the second suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is in a stable condition, police said. The incident unfolded when the two officers were called to the scene of a subject with a weapon in an alley in the northwest of the city at around 9:20 p.m. It was subsequently updated to a shots-fired incident when officers were en route to the scene. While approaching the suspect, the officers were unexpectedly fired upon in the alley of the 2200 block of N. 24th Place, police said. Both officers were struck by gunfire and were unable to return fire. The officer in critical condition is a 32-year-old man with more than six years of service, and he is being treated at a local hospital. The second officer, a 29-year-old man, also has more than six years of service and is in stable condition. Assistant Milwaukee Police Chief Nicole Waldner said the suspect is known to police, but they have not released a name. "The problem is too many people have guns," Waldner said. "I could put an officer on every single corner, that will not eliminate the amount of guns in the hands of people that shouldn't have them." Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said the person responsible for the shooting will be brought to justice. I ask anyone who can help the investigation to reach out to the police. "It's a sad day, it's a very sad day, because no officer, no person in law enforcement should ever, ever be fired upon," Johnson said. The Milwaukee Police Association (MPA) condemned the shooting and said that violence in the city is "out of control." "This senseless act of violence has struck the very heart of our department and our community," the MPA said in a statement cited by Fox 6. "We have reached a breaking point. Violence in our city is out of control, and those who protect our neighborhoods are increasingly in the crosshairs." The MPA said that five officers have been killed in the line of duty over the past seven years and dozens of officers have been shot and shot at. "Our officers wear the badge with pride and honor, but our officers need more leadership from the city to bring an end to this violence." The incident comes two weeks after another Milwaukee officer was shot and injured by one of two suspects during an investigatory stop which devolved into a shootout. The shooter was also injured. In February, a Milwaukee police officer was also shot while the suspect was killed. As of 2024, Milwaukee is considered one of the most dangerous cities in Wisconsin, according to Statistics from last year indicate that the murder rate in the city had declined, but carjackings did see an increase, Fox 6 Milwaukee reported.

Milwaukee street takeovers; support for new ordinance, $500 fine

The Brief Milwaukee police say they broke up a street takeover on the city's south side on Sunday evening, June 8. There's support for an ordinance that would fine anyone involved in a street takeover $500. Additionally, the Puerto Rican Festival Parade President said that the parade had nothing to do with the takeover. MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee police responded to another street takeover, this one on Sunday night, June 8, 2025. Police were called to the city's south side around 4 p.m. There are tire marks all over this intersection at 14th and Burnham. SIGN UP TODAY: Get daily headlines, breaking news emails from FOX6 News The area was shut down after police were called to a street takeover. FOX6 spoke with people who say the same takeover happens every year. They're calling on the city to be better prepared. What they're saying People hanging out of cars, burning tires, and a large police response. That was what the area of 14th and Burnham looked like during Sunday night's street takeover. "It's not fair for people who have to get up and go to work in the morning, or take their kids to school to be woken up at three in the morning, because some people decide to do donuts and set off firecrackers and shoot in the air," said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson. "They are dangerous. I witnessed a vehicle doing a donut in this intersection. People just feet away. He would have lost control of the car, someone else was burning out, they could have lost control of the car -- anyone could have gotten hurt," said Milwaukee Common Council President Jose Perez. The police gave out four citations. The week before, Mayor Cavalier Johnson announced his support for an ordinance circulating common council. It would fine anyone involved in a street takeover $500. MPD also assigned five "patrol missions" to the north side and five to the south side, along with two tow trucks to crack down on the takeovers and those involved. FOX6 asked police if those missions responded Sunday. MPD wouldn't say. What they're saying "Every year, it happens," said Walter Garron, Puerto Rican Festival Parade President. More than two miles away, Garron led the Puerto Rican Parade. "Puerto Ricans feel proud, and they want to get their flags and sometimes people get carried away," said Garron. Garron says the parade had nothing to do with the takeover. The festivities were over by 7 p.m. He says he's frustrated because, every national Puerto Rican day parade, this happens. "If people already know that this happens every year, why don't they prepare? Make the correct measurements for the closures on the street," added Garron. FREE DOWNLOAD: Get breaking news alerts in the FOX LOCAL Mobile app for iOS or Android Garron says when planning the parade, they don't serve alcohol to keep the event family-friendly. He says the takeovers are frustrating on a day the community is supposed to celebrate. "For us to be reflected that way, that's not us, and it's a little disappointing," said Garron. Milwaukee police told FOX6 that they have not had issues on past National Puerto Rican Parade days. FOX6 will keep you posted as the common council debates the street takeover ordinance. Perez says the council will discuss the street takeovers. The Source FOX6 has previously reported on the street takeover with information from the Milwaukee Police Department. FOX6 also interviewed Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and Puerto Rican Festival Parade President Walter Garron to produce this story.

Overnight quadruple shooting in Milwaukee injures four near Fiserv Forum, Deer District

An overnight quadruple shooting in downtown Milwaukee sent four young adults to hospitals for injuries, according to the Milwaukee Police Department. The shooting happened around 2:47 a.m. June 8 on the 300 block of West McKinley Avenue, one block northeast of the Deer District and Fiserv Forum. Three 22-year-old victims were transported to local hospitals for injuries, though police did not specify if the injuries were gunshot wounds. Another 21-year-old-victim sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound, police said, and was taken to a hospital. No one died in the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and police seek unknown suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7360. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-Tips or P3 Tips. The shooting comes two days after two shootings that happened minutes apart on West Hampton Avenue, killing two and injuring four. Those shootings prompted Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson to issue a statement, asking the city's residents to take "all possible steps" to reduce gun violence. "To anyone inclined to shamelessly shoot at another human being, your actions will land you in prison," Johnson said. Gun violence has risen in recent weeks, with homicides in mid-May outpacing 2024 figures. The increase has prompted concern among violence prevention groups.
