WATCH: Safety concerns over R34 ongoing roadwork delays

Roadwork delays on the pothole-riddled R34 outside Empangeni have left motorists fuming and concerned for their safety. Three weeks ago, the contractor removed the tar along the Bargain Shed to Empangeni Milling stretch of road, however, the section has been left unworked on for almost two weeks. Heavy traffic flow along the road poses huge frustration for motorists. 'They've carved it up, but nothing is happening. Are the guys still on contract? Is there money left?' questioned one motorist. According to a public notice issued by the Municipal Manager of Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, the public viewing and registration scheduled for today and tomorrow has been postponed. An update will be given at a later stage whether the main auction set for Wednesday will continue. 79 arrested in West Rand during Operation Shanela

A total of 79 suspects were arrested in the West Rand during a high-impact crime crackdown led by Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, on Saturday evening, June 22. The arrests formed part of Operation Shanela, a province-wide blitz conducted this past weekend, June 20-22, to tackle various criminal activities. Of the 79 arrests in the West Rand, more than 20 were for driving under the influence of alcohol. Police also conducted raids and roadblocks in the area, targeting illegal liquor outlets and tracking down wanted suspects. Mayor speaks frankly on Mogale City's troubles, shares optimism

In his maiden State of the City Address, Mayor Lucky Sele openly acknowledged the municipality's pressing challenges, including significant service delivery backlogs, deteriorating infrastructure, and other ongoing issues, but reassured residents that there is hope for recovery and progress through planned interventions and renewed commitment. • Read the initial article here: Municipality to deliver State of the City Address The News will provide a detailed breakdown of the key points discussed during the State of the City Address (SOCA) to help the public better understand the mayor's message and plans. Sele opened SOCA by stating that they gathered not just to account, but to acknowledge the journey of a city that refused to surrender to the weight of its own challenges, where everyone tells a different story, not of despair, but of defiance against decay; not of failure, but of a people and a municipality that have begun to shift the tide. 'What once seemed inevitable, financial instability, service delivery backlogs, crumbling infrastructure and lost hope, has begun to give way to a new horizon. A horizon shaped by action, accountability and a renewed contract between the city and its people. We are steering Mogale City toward restoration, regeneration and resilience,' he stated. He mentioned that this year's SOCA took place in June, recognised as Youth Month, and explained its historical importance and impact. 'This address takes place against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving socio-economic landscape, locally and globally. It is a time where we are called upon to be agile, responsive, and developmental in the face of fiscal constraints, service delivery pressures, and a growing demand for ethical, people-centred governance. We remain guided by the founding principles of the Freedom Charter, which this year marks its 70th anniversary, and by the enduring belief that the people shall govern,' he explained. 'The SOCA is not merely a report card – it is a clarion call for action, for responsiveness and for developmental governance that leaves no ward, no informal settlement, and no citizen behind. Let us proceed, together, in service of the people,' he concluded. In the second part of the series, the News will explain how the mayor addresses Infrastructure Development Service. WATCH: Youth choir thrills as Kruger sunset and bush sounds play along

The Ndlovu Youth Choir received a well-deserved 'golden buzzer' from the Kruger National Park audience at Friday night's (June 13) Kruger Concert for Conservation organised by the SANParks Honorary Rangers. The choir first shot to fame in 2019 when they ended in the top 10 of America's Got Talent, stealing the hearts of the judges and audiences in the process. From humble beginnings as a choir from a remote village in Limpopo, the group's new-found fame took them on a global journey, performing, producing music albums and garnering millions of views on social media platforms. With perfect weather and a magical setting, the evening started with the 500 guests enjoying harvest table delicacies and sipping on a variety of great wines, gin and bubbly. WATCH THE VIDEO HERE: Set against the sunset canvas of red and orange and the life-size Honorary Rangers elephants standing tall next to the main stage, the Skukuza runway was transformed. Better ambience could not have been asked for when the concert commenced with the Lowveld group, Meisie Music, featuring Naomi Tagg and Janette Rottcher on violins, with Lizanne Barnard on piano, vocals, flute and drum. Their renditions of 'The Fire Within', 'My Sarie Marais', 'Now We are Free' and 'Mamela' lay the foundation for the rest of the programme. With everyone in high spirits, the internationally acclaimed Ndlovu Youth Choir burst onto the stage after a short break, filling the air with vibrant song and dance. Crowd favourites like 'My African Dream', 'Shosholoza', Toto's 'Africa', and a twist on Kurt Darren's song 'Kaptein' had everyone tapping their feet. You could hear a pin drop when their adaptation of 'Nessun Dorma', with its distinct African sounds, was performed. The audience rewarded it with a standing ovation. Even more unexpected was the rendition of 'Bohemian Rhapsody', unlike anything heard before. Ralf Schmitt, the co-founder and artistic director of the Ndlovu Youth Choir, proudly announced that the official release of the song will take place in the next few weeks. The youngsters' powerhouse vocals, irresistibly combined with mesmerising choreography and infectious energy, ignited the audience, and by the time they played out with 'Pata Pata', everyone was on their feet. The evening not only shared a musical message of hope, love and cohesion, but also kindled the African spirit of those in attendance. The main sponsors, First National Bank and Suzuki Nelspruit, were equally impressed with the evening. Head of fundraising for the Honorary Rangers Lowveld Region, Linda Pieters, said the event exceeded all expectations. 'We are truly blessed with the generosity of our sponsors and the guests who attended. The funds will be used for various approved projects in the Kruger National Park.'
