Red Sox lineup: Ceddanne Rafaela at 2B, in new spot in order for first time in career
Update: Roman Anthony is 'under the weather,' manager Alex Cora said. So the Red Sox moved him from the left to DH. Masataka Yoshida, who was initially the DH, will play left field. CHICAGO — Ceddanne Rafaela is playing second base and batting third in the Red Sox lineup for the first time in his career. The Red Sox and Cubs will play the final game of their three-game series Sunday at 2:20 p.m. eastern here at Wrigley Field. Ace Garrett Crochet (10-4, 2.23 ERA) will start for Boston opposite Cubs righty Cade Horton (3-3, 4.45 ERA). Boston will try to avoid a sweep before heading to Philadelphia for three games. Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu are back in the lineup after sitting against a lefty starter Saturday. As expected, Alex Bregman will rest today. The Red Sox plan on giving him two of the six games off during this road trip as he works his way back from the IL (right quad strain). Marcelo Mayer is at third base. Romy Gonzalez will play first base against the righty starter and Abraham Toro will sit. Ceddanne Rafaela gets new spot in Red Sox' lineup — and position — Saturday after walk-off HR
BOSTON — How did the Red Sox reward the red-hot Ceddanne Rafaela after crushing a walk-off home run in a dramatic win Saturday? By moving him up in the lineup and giving him a new position, too. Rafaela, who has played center field and hit ninth virtually all season, is hitting second and starting at second base Saturday afternoon against the Rays and starter Shane Baz. The Red Sox wanted to rest third baseman Alex Bregman for a day after he came off the injured list to return Friday, so Marcelo Mayer will play third base and Rafaela, for the first time in a start this season, will shift to second. All 85 of Rafaela's starts in 2025 have come in center field and with him hitting sixth or lower (including 59 times in the No. 9 spot). But the Red Sox want to capitalize on a red-hot stretch that has seen the 24-year-old hit .352 with seven homers, 10 doubles, 20 RBIs and a 1.167 OPS in his last 19 games. Jarren Duran is once again in center field for the Red Sox and Roman Anthony is in left field. Masataka Yoshida is the DH. 'We had to (play Rafaela at second) today,' said manager Alex Cora. 'No Alex (Bregman) and Romy (Gonzalez) will play first base but he's a little bit banged up from playing all those games so giving him another day makes sense. This is the only way we'll align today. 'Yesterday, he was at second taking ground balls and he looked like he had been playing there the whole season. But he wants to win a Gold Glove and be the best defensive center fielder in the big leagues... This whole second base thing, he's not going to play everyday at second. He's not. But to make it work, at one point having all the lefties in the lineup except Marcelo at that point, he probably plays once a week, if that.' Rafaela has logged one fill-in inning at second base this year, on June 6. He made four starts there last year and one in 2023. Saturday marks the highest he has hit in the batting order since leading off games in Pittsburgh on April 21 and 23 last season. The Sox are looking for their ninth straight win after starting their homestand with three wins over the Rockies and two one-run victories over Tampa Bay. They'll send All-Star Garrett Crochet to the mound for his 20th and final start of a dominant first half. First pitch is at 4:10 p.m. ET. MLB Insider Calls Streaking Red Sox 'Legitimate World Series Contenders'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Jeff Passan of ESPN appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show" and stated that the Boston Red Sox are going to be buyers this season and, with the right move, World Series contenders. The Red Sox currently hold a wild card spot in the American League and are getting ready to make a second-half push to hold off the rest of the junior circuit. BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - JULY 11: Ceddanne Rafaela #3 of the Boston Red Sox celebrates with teammates after hitting a two-run walk off home run against the Tampa Bay Rays during the ninth inning at Fenway... BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - JULY 11: Ceddanne Rafaela #3 of the Boston Red Sox celebrates with teammates after hitting a two-run walk off home run against the Tampa Bay Rays during the ninth inning at Fenway Park on July 11, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. More Photo byPassan refuted rumors of the potential trade of Aroldis Chapman and Alex Bregman, saying that the pair is "going nowhere". Passan declared the Red Sox as buyers, saying, "They're going to add, and if they can get another starting pitcher who can be at the top of that rotation with Garrett Crochet, with Brayan Bello pitching so well, Lucas Giolito, the Boston Red Sox are legitimate World Series contenders." It's a bold claim for a team that is currently in third place in its division, but Passan might not be that far off. The youngsters in the Red Sox clubhouse have started to make the turn, with the team going on a 10-game winning streak just before the trade deadline and looking to make it 11 straight wins on Friday. There was some speculation that Bregman, who has an opt-out after this season, could be moved, but the Red Sox have gotten hot and are looking to overtake the Yankees, placing themselves squarely in title contention. The trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Red Sox have some needs to fill if they want to return to the Fall Classic, but according to Passan, they are right in the mix. Yankee fans beware, the Red Sox are coming. After all looked lost in Beantown just two weeks ago, the Bombers' biggest rival is right in the thick of the American League East race with the arrow pointing way up. The Red Sox went into the MLB All-Star break on a 10-game winning streak and it appears the team might be coming together, giving the Yankees, who also have to deal with the division-leading Blue Jays, some serious competition for the top spot. Young outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela and Roman Anthony have flashed star potential of late. After years of dealing with injuries, Trevor Story is showing signs of the player he was during his days with the Colorado Rockies. Garrett Crochet is giving Tigers ace Tarik Skubal a run for the AL Cy Young award. Getty Images They've looked so good of late, both ESPN's Jeff Passan and The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal touted Boston as a possible World Series contender. Despite being just three games behind Toronto, and one game back of the Yankees, the Red Sox are a significant +600 long shot to win the division at most major sportsbooks. With the Blue Jays playing a bit over their head, sporting a run differential of just +17, the AL East is a toss up, at this point. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting The Yankees are still a -130 favorite despite recent struggles, followed by the Blue Jays at +185. With a much better payout available on a team right in the mix, I'm putting my money behind the Red Sox. The play: Red Sox to win the AL East (+600, FanDuel Sportsbook)
