Dive deeper in Prince's legacy with a new self-guided tour of Minneapolis
Dive deeper in Prince's legacy with a new self-guided tour of Minneapolis originally appeared on Bring Me The News. As Prince is celebrated around the Twin Cities this week during Celebration 2025 and other events, locals and visitors can dive a little deeper into The High Priest of Pop's life in Minnesota with the just-launched Purple Path. The self-guided tour is a new project from Meet Minneapolis, Paisley Park, and the Downtown Improvement District that features temporary sidewalk clings marking places around Minneapolis (and one in Chanhassen) that were significant places in Prince's life. The purple sidewalk markers are scattered around Minneapolis, with the majority in places around downtown at familiar locales like the Dakota Jazz Club, First Avenue, and the Schmitt Music Mural. Though there are deeper cuts as well, offering a deeper dive into Prince's life. Each marker has a QR code that can be scanned to gain insight into why places like the IDS Center, the now-gone Glam Slam, or Mt. Sinai Hospital are part of Prince's legacy. Here's where you'll find each of the Purple Path markets around town: Original Sound 80 Studios (2709 E 25th St.) Capri Theater (2027 W Broadway Ave.) First Avenue (701 N 1st Ave.) Glam Slam (Now Cowboy Jack's, 110 N 5th St.) Bunker's Music Bar & Grill (761 Washington Ave. N) Dakota Jazz Club (1010 Nicollet Mall, will be installed at a later date) Electric Fetus (2000 4th Ave. S) The House from Purple Rain (3420 Snelling Ave. S) Orpheum Theatre (910 hennepin Ave.) IDS Center (80 S 8th St.) Uptown Mural (26th Street and Hennepin Avenue) North Loop Mural (424 N Washington Ave.) Downtown Mural (1st Avenue and 8th Street) Schmitt Music Mural (South 10th Street & Marquette Avenue) Prince Photograph (N 1st Street & N 1st Avenue) Mt. Twin Cities weekend: Giant pencil sharpening, Edina Art Fair, Prince celebration
It's that time of year again: The giant pencil at Lake of the Isles is getting its birthday sharpening. Context: Since its creation in 2022, owner John Higgins has thrown a massive annual party for the community to celebrate the 16-foot-tall pencil sculpture, carved from a tree in Higgins' front yard by chainsaw sculptor Curtis Ingvoldstad. Previous years have included "human pencil" dancers, a drum line, T-shirt cannons, professional pencil sharpener David Rees, speeches on scrolls presented by barristers and free ice cream. What to expect: The 4-foot-long giant pencil sharpener will make an appearance, but the rest of the programming is largely a mystery — though according to Higgins, the customary complimentary pencils handed out at the event will be purple in honor of Prince's birthday. 📍 Details: Saturday, June 7 from 1-2:30pm at 2217 E. Lake of the Isles Parkway, Minneapolis, rain or shine. Free! More things to do ... 💜 Remember Prince's legacy at Paisley Park and downtown Minneapolis' Celebration 2025 Thursday-Sunday. This year's event honors "the vibrant era of 1985" and includes access to panels, concerts, dance parties, exclusive listening sessions of unreleased audio and more. Packages for the four-day festival start at $752.75 🎨 The Edina Art Fair returns Friday-Sunday at 50th & France with over 250 local and national artists alongside live music, three beer and wine gardens, plenty of food trucks and a specialty culinary artisan marketplace. 🌈 Kick off Pride month in the suburbs this Saturday as Golden Valley and Anoka both hold their city-wide celebrations.
