Over 20K more forces lined up for J&K
NEW DELHI: In view of the emerging security challenges in Jammu & Kashmir following 'Operation Sindoor', besides an apparent shortage of personnel in the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has given an in-principle approval to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for raising 20 new battalions, which would mean an addition of over 20,000 more personnel, for deployment in the Union Territory, sources said on Tuesday. According to sources, the CRPF had originally placed a demand for raising 35 additional battalions, but the Ministry has given its approval for 20 battalions for the time being. The CRPF had initiated the proposal sometime in October last year and the issue remained pending, but in view of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and subsequent 'Operation Sindoor' by the Indian Armed Forces, the government felt it was necessary to consider the proposal on urgent basis, sources said. 'During a meeting with officers of the MHA and CRPF, it was decided that while the full 35-battalion proposal will remain under consideration, but in the immediate future, approval could be granted for 20 battalions, as the file is likely to get the Union Cabinet nod. The Union finance ministry has already cleared the proposal,' a source, privy with the developments, said. It is also learnt from sources that the newly-raised battalions would be more specialised in their operational capabilities, with a particular focus on the J&K terrain and security situation, in view of the evolving responsibilities of the CRPF which is expected to further increase amid cross-border security threats.

Puri soaked in religious fervour as Rath Yatra begins
Puri: Religious fervour gripped the pilgrim town of Puri as the grand Rath Yatra commenced on Friday with the holy triad -- Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra -- stepping out of their sanctum sanctorum in the divine 'Pahandi' ritual. In a convergence of devotion, over 10 lakh devotees gathered in Puri to witness the Rath Yatra. Thousands of people pulled the ropes attached with chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings on the Grand Road from near the 12th-century shrine here towards Shree Gundicha temple, around 2.6 km away. Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and several other dignitaries were among those who pulled the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra. Amid chanting of 'Jai Jagannath' and 'Hari Bol', beating of cymbals and blowing of trumpets and conch shells, the 'Taladhwaja' chariot of Lord Balabhadra first started rolling at 4.08 pm. It was followed by Devi Subhadra's 'Darpadalana' chariot and finally Lord Jagannath's 'Nandighosha'. While the devotees were pulling the chariots, the priests surrounded the deities on the chariots as the procession made its way through the Grand Road of this temple town. While thousands of people pulled chariots, lakhs of others also reached the seaside temple town to participate in the festival. The chariot pulling started after Puri's titular king, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, performed 'Chhera Pahanra' (sweeping of chariots) on all three chariots. Wooden horses of different colours were fitted on three chariots before they were pulled by the devotees. Earlier, the trinity, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath, ascended their respective chariots after over two-hour long ceremonial 'Pahandi' ritual. During 'Pahandi', the three wooden idols were carried to the chariots from the 12th-century Jagannath temple. Odissi dancers, folk artistes, music players and many other groups drawn from different parts of the State performed before the idols. The Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth, Swami Nischalananda Saraswati, along with selected disciples, visited the three chariots after the deities were placed on them. The 81-year-old seer came near the chariots in a wheelchair. The Shankaracharya's visit is also part of the Rath Yatra rituals. Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Puri MP Sambit Patra, Odisha ministers and several others witnessed the ceremonial Pahandi, one of the major attractions of Rath Yatra in Puri. The festival is being held amid unprecedented security arrangements with deployment of around 10,000 personnel of Odisha Police, Central Armed Police Force, NSG and others. 'We have made all possible arrangements for smooth conduct of Rath Yatra,' DGP Y B Khurania told reporters, adding that over 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras were installed to keep a watch on the crowd. ADGP (Law and Order) Sanjay Kumar said the arrangements are made in view of some information following the Pahalgam terror attack. 'Several Central government agencies are collaborating with Odisha Police, including NSG snipers, Coast Guard drones and anti-drone systems. Canine teams and Odisha's anti-sabotage units are also engaged in duty here,' he said.

Arunachal locals protest CAPF deployment for Siang mega power project
GUWAHATI: Protests broke out at Beging village of Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday against the deployment of Central Armed Police Force personnel for the proposed 11,000 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. The personnel were deployed in some villages and the headquarters of Siang, Upper Siang and East Siang districts to assist the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) to conduct a survey-cum-pre-feasibility report for the project on the Siang river. The protestors, mostly women, came out of their homes holding placards and shouted slogans against the project. An indefinite dharna was organised by the Siang Indigenous Farmers' Forum (SIFF) and another local organisation. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of the central force and a peaceful dialogue with SIFF and the project-affected families. These families have been opposing the proposed dam project for a long time under the banner of SIFF. They said the 'forceful' survey was a blatant violation of their fundamental rights under the Constitution of India. They condemned the alleged arbitrary abuse of power, stating that it hurt and violated their sentiments and rights.

Geeta Samota becomes first CISF personnel to conquer Mt Everest
New Delhi, Sub Inspector Geeta Samota has become the first CISF personnel to conquer the world's tallest peak Mount Everest in the 56-year-long history of the force, a spokesperson said Tuesday. She summited the 8,849 m tall mountain on Monday. "Geeta stood on the 'roof of the world', a triumphant moment symbolising not just a personal victory, but the incredible resilience and strength fostered within the CISF and the Indian nation," the spokesperson said in a statement. The 35-year-old subordinate officer joined the paramilitary force in 2011 and is currently posted at the Udaipur airport unit of the Central Industrial Security Force . The mountaineer hails from the Chak village in Rajasthan's Sikar district and had initially started as hockey player in her local college. Her upbringing was traditional in a house that had five daughters including her. An injury led her to move away from hockey and upon joining the force she found CISF did not had a mountaineering team then and she saw an sporting and adventure opportunity here, the spokesperson said. Samota went on to undertake specialised training in mountaineering and in 2019 she became the first woman from any Central Armed Police Force to scale Mount Satopanth in Uttarakhand and Mount Lobuche in Nepal, he said. In early 2021, the CF contingent for a Mount Everest expedition of which Geeta was part, was unfortunately called off due to technical reasons. She then set an ambitious goal the "Seven Summits" challenge, which involves climbing the highest peak on each of the seven continents. Between 2021-2022, she summited four of these formidable peaks: Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, Mount Elbrus in Russia, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Mount Aconcagua in Argentina. The CISF official achieved this feat in a "remarkable" span of just six months and 27 days, making her the fastest Indian woman to do so, he said. Samota, the spokesperson said, also became the first and fastest woman to climb five peaks in Ladakh's Rupshu region in just three days, including three peaks over 6,000 m and two over 5,000 m. "The CISF director general and force members have extended their profound congratulations to Samota. Her extraordinary journey and successful summit, shine as a beacon of inspiration for the youth of India and stand as a moment of immense pride for the entire CFs fraternity," he said. The about 2 lakh personnel strength force guards vital installations in the government and private domain including airports, nuclear power centres and historical monuments.
