How some DSM residents conserve water after CIWW reduction use request

DES MOINES, Iowa — Earlier this week, Central Iowa Water Works asked central Iowans to reduce their water use by 25%. Here are a few ways the community is reducing its usage. On Friday, CIWW requested the community to voluntarily reduce their water usage due to the water supply conditions from nitrate concentration in both the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers. Despite the issue, all finished water meets state and federal regulations for drinking and other uses, CIWW said. Regional Water lifts boil advisory for one city, others remain under restrictions Central Iowa Water Works recommends the following tips to reduce water usage. If you normally run your sprinklers for an hour, water for 45 minutes. If you water for three days, only water one or two. Consider watering only your front lawn. Water in the early morning or late evening. Do not water on Monday Steven Lischer, a Des Moines Resident, said he would be happy to make changes to conserve water if needed. 'If I need to reduce my, my watering or run my watering at, at night, then that's an easy change to make,' Lischer said. Leslie Marrs, a Des Moines Resident, said she plants greenery that is native to Iowa, which needs less water. 'I try not to water my lawn. I do have a garden. And when I put in new plants, I water them. But I am trying to plant natives so that I don't have to water them once they're situated,' Marrs said. Chris Peyton, a Des Moines Resident, said he recommends checking the forecast for rain to let mother nature help water the lawn. 'I know we have some rain in the forecast. So, you know, I try to for, you know, look at what the future looks like in terms of rain and try to plan my watering around it as best I can,' Peyton said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
