Assam To Clear 10,000 Bighas Of Encroached Land Amid Mega Eviction Drive
Guwahati: As a part of Assam's massive crackdown against land encroachment by illegal migrants, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government is now planning to launch a massive eviction drive in upper Assam's Golaghat. The move will clear 10,000 bighas (approximately 3,300 acres) of land in the Rengma Reserve forest at Uriamghat, bordering Nagaland. The eviction drive will affect nearly 2,000 families who have allegedly encroached on the forest land and turned it into a betel nut plantation linked with the betel mafia. Fearing the eviction, many people belonging to the Bengali-speaking Muslims who have been branded as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh had fled the area and were trying to take shelter in other places in Assam. Nearly 700–800 police personnel, along with teams from the Forest Department and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), were stationed in and around the Rengma Forest reserve. Heavy machinery, including bulldozers and excavators, has also been mobilised for the operation. The evictions come after extensive land surveys across 30 villages in the reserve forest area under the Sarupathar sub-division. The Assam government claims that the encroachers originate from Muslim-dominated areas of Nagaon, Morigaon, Sonitpur, and even districts such as Cachar, Dhubri, Barpeta, and Hojai in Assam. Many illegal migrants are also from West Bengal and Bihar, according to the government. Himanta Biswa stated that 70% of the identified encroachers had already vacated voluntarily and reiterated the government's commitment to restoring forest and government land. Last week, Mr Sarma had said that 1.29 lakh bighas (over 42,500 acres) of land have been cleared of encroachment in the last four years, while approximately 29 lakh bighas (more than 9.5 lakh acres) of land remain encroached in the state. Amid a large-scale eviction drive in Assam, the Nagaland government has also issued an advisory to bordering districts to remain on high alert and prevent any spillover of displaced families into its territory during the eviction. Meanwhile, the prominent Naga radical group NSCN (Niki) has claimed that the recent evictions by the Assam government were neither surprising nor unexpected but a deliberate attempt to seize Naga ancestral lands labelled as the "Disturbed Area Belt", a misleading designation stemming from British colonial boundaries imposed for administrative convenience without consulting the Naga people. In a statement, NSCN/GPRN (Niki) alleged that successive Assam governments have long pursued the settlement of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants (IBIs) in disputed border areas to facilitate covert territorial occupation.

India to deploy 40 commandos to protect its embassy in Libya
Indian authorities have announced plans to deploy 40 special forces commandos to protect their embassy in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, following a model previously implemented in Baghdad. General Director of India's Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) commandos said 'Personnel from the CRPF will be assigned to secure the Indian embassy in Tripoli, in a mission similar to the one previously carried out in Baghdad.' 'Around 40 personnel will take on the responsibility in Tripoli once the necessary approvals are obtained from the Ministry of External Affairs.' He added. The Indian Embassy in Libya was reopened in July of last year after nearly five years of closure due to the deteriorating security situation in the North African country. Officials familiar with the matter told the agency that 'the CRPF had previously guarded the Indian embassy in Libya for around four to five years, but it was shut down amid escalating chaos and merged with the Indian embassy in neighboring Tunisia.' Days after Kanwar Yatra spat, CRPF jawan shot dead in Sonipat village
Sonipat: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan, identified as Krishna, in his early thirties, was shot dead in Sonipat's Kheri Damkan village late Sunday night. The soldier had just returned home to be with his wife, who gave birth to their second child three days ago. According to police, unknown assailants called Krishna out of his home around 1am. He was then shot multiple times. Family members, alerted by the gunshots, rushed out to find him lying in a pool of blood. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Krishna, who was posted in Chhattisgarh, had been on a month-long leave since July 16 to support his family and pregnant wife. He joined the CRPF 11 years ago and married seven years ago. He is survived by his wife, who remains hospitalised post-delivery, and two sons — a six-year-old and a newborn just three days old. Gohana ACP Rishikant said that preliminary investigations suggest a confrontation during a Kanwar Yatra on July 22 as a potential motive for the attack. Krishna had travelled to Haridwar to bring Kanwar and reportedly had an altercation with some youths from his own village during the journey. He had also performed 'jalabhishek' at the village Shiva temple on Shivratri. Police indicate that Krishna was called out of his home late at night and fired upon by youths believed to be from Kheri Damkan village. Krishna's father, Balwan, has named three local youths—Ajay, Nishant, and Anand—as suspects. All three are absconding. Local police and a forensic team collected evidence before Krishna's body was sent to PGIMS, Khanpur for post-mortem. Four police teams, including two from CIA, have been formed to investigate the case. A murder case has been registered. MSID:: 122953085 413 |

Chinese Satellite Phone, Spy Drones And Nomads: How Army Neutralised 2 Pahalgam Terrorists
Three Pakistani terrorists were killed in Operation Mahadev, a significant anti-terror operation launched by security forces on the outskirts of Srinagar in the Zabarwan Hills. The operation was a joint effort by the Jammu & Kashmir Police, Indian Army, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). It took place in the Lidwas area near Dachigam National Park and Mount Mahadev, a strategically and symbolically significant location in the Zabarwan Range. Hence, the operation was called Operation Mahadev. The operation was initiated based on intelligence inputs gathered over 15 days, beginning with the detection of a Chinese satellite phone in the Baisaran area on July 11, 2025. Local nomads provided additional information confirming terrorist movements in the Dachigam forests. The operation was meticulously planned, involving drone surveillance and inputs from intercepted communications. Today, around 11:30 AM, security forces, including elite units like 4 Para, 24 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), and the SOG of Jammu & Kashmir Police, surrounded a group of three terrorists on Mulnar Peak near Lidwas Meadow, which falls in the Mount Mahadev area. The terrorists, caught resting in a tent, were neutralized in a swift and precise strike by the forces during intense firefighting. Three terrorists were killed and identified as high-value targets. The operation continued post-encounter to locate remaining associates believed to be scattered in the forested area. Drones and additional reinforcements were deployed to support ongoing search and combing operations. IGP Kashmir Vidhi Kumar Birdi said, "Operation Mahadev is continuing. As per the initial reports, three bodies have been observed and seem to be neutralized. It will take us some time for identification, and parties are still inside..." However, sources in the Army linking the operation to the Pahalgam attack said, "A top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander who was involved in the Pahalgam attack got killed. A Rs 20 lakh reward had been announced for information on him." He named him as Sulaiman. Another killed terrorist is said to be Yasir @ Harris. He is also suspected to be involved in the Pahalgam attack, and the third is said to be Abu Hamza, though there is no confirmation of his role in the Pahalgam attack as of now. Security forces recovered huge and modern arms and ammunition from the terrorists, including one M4 carbine, two AK-47 rifles, 17 rifle grenades, and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). These recoveries indicate the terrorists were heavily armed and planning further attacks. The operation was one of the most significant anti-terror actions since the Pahalgam attack, demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated intelligence and security forces. The use of indigenous technology, such as drones, UAVs, and local intelligence from nomads, indicates how security forces are combing the forest areas after the Pahalgam attack. The operation coincided with a parliamentary debate on Operation Sindoor, India's retaliatory strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the Pahalgam attack. The success of Operation Mahadev bolstered the government's stance amid opposition criticism over security lapses. While the neutralized terrorists were suspected to be linked to the Pahalgam attack, official confirmation of their identities is still awaited. The IGP said that identification would take time. Intelligence suggested that other associates of the neutralized terrorists might still be active in the region, prompting continued search operations. The rugged terrain of Dachigam and Lidwas posed challenges for tracking. The Chinar Corps updated progress on X, stating, 'OP MAHADEV - Update: Three terrorists have been neutralized in an intense firefight. Operation continues.' Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Northern Command chief, congratulated the forces for their swift action. He wrote on X, "Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, #ArmyCdrNC, compliments #ChinarCorps for their swift action and precise execution in neutralizing three terrorists in the ongoing operation #Mahadev in area #Lidwas. #IndianArmy stands by its commitment to keep #JammuKashmir terror-free. #NationFirst #IndianArmy" Operation Mahadev was a decisive strike against terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir, neutralizing three high-value LeT terrorists. It showcased the synergy of security forces, advanced technology, and intelligence-driven operations.
