Shakib Al Hasan's all-round show hands Dubai Capitals winning start in Global Super League debut
Former UAE captain Ahmed Raza's first game as head coach of a franchise team got off to a perfect start as his Dubai Capitals team emerged winners by 22 runs over New Zealand's Central Stags in the Global Super League opener at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Thursday. Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was the star of the show as his unbeaten 37-ball 58 helped the Capitals post 165-7. He then returned with 4-13 from four overs to restrict the Stags to 143-8 and secure victory in the invitational T20 tournament. The Bangladesh legend arrived at the fall of Kadeem Alleyne's wicket after a fine burst from Angus Schaw had the Capitals 58-3 in the eighth over. Shakib dispatched the first delivery he faced from Schaw to the fence with a splendid revers sweep. He then went about rebuilding the innings with the help of seven fours and a six. Opener Sediqullah Atal smashed a 25-ball 41 while Jesse Bootan (20) and Dominic Drakes (11) also helped the DP World ILT20 team post a decent total. The Stags made a promising start to the chase, with Will Young (19) and Dane Cleaver (21) putting on 30 in 4.1 overs before Shakib provided a double blow. Shakib bowled a double-wicket maiden in the fifth over, trapping Will Young and Dean Foxcroft lbw. He finished with excellent figures of 4-1-13-4 to help defeat the Super Smash champions. In the second match on the opening day, defending champions Rangpur Riders edged out Guyana Amazon Warriors by eight runs. And it was yet another Bangladeshi - Khaled Ahmed - who starred in the win by taking four wickets late in the Warriors innings to skittle them for 154 in reply to the Riders total of 162-5. The tournament pits five franchise league winners against one another, including Australia's Big Bash champions Hobart Hurricanes, Caribbean Premier League winners Amazon Warriors and Bangladesh Premier League's Rangpur Riders. Having got off to a perfect start, Raza's men take on Hobart Hurricanes in Friday's second game. 'The talent which is on show in the GSL is absolutely brilliant and everyone is eager to get the tournament started,' Raza had said earlier. 'The quality of teams here and the players on show … you get the winners of different franchises coming together and playing in a tournament. It's a great platform for the players. 'In my team, the players have arrived from different parts of the world and they are all eager to get going.'

Guyana Global Super League looks to take Champions League T20 vacuum as five teams confirm participation
More than 10 years after the Champions League T20 — a tournament that brought domestic T20 franchises together — a similar tournament that was successfully held in 2024 returns to the calendar once again in Guyana. Guyana Global Super League (GSL) has announced the tournament which includes five T20 teams from around the world will take place from July 10 to 18 at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence. The tournament will see Dubai Capitals (ILT20), Hobart Hurricanes (Big Bash), Central Stags (Super Smash), Rangpur Riders (BPL) and Guyana Amazon Warriors (CPL, finalists) facing each-other. Rangpur Riders were in the champions of the inaugural edition held last year which included Lahore Qalandars (PSL) and Hampshire Hawks (T20 Cup). In the final, Rangpur defeated Cricket Victoria to win the title. This time, the tournament will see Central Stags coming in place for County side Hampshire while Dubai Capitals in place of Lahore. There won't be any participation from SA20 and IPL. The Champions League T20 modelled on the concept of UEFA Champions League was a popular tournament held between 2009 to 2014 with Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians winning it twice each. After New South Wales won the inaugural edition in 2009, Sidney Sixers was the only other side to claim the trophy. While the tournament was supposed to be held alternatively in India, South Africa and Australia, it never materialised due to logistical challenges. It meant, only India and South Africa hosted the event with weather condition deemed not favourable for Australia to host the tournament in the September window. Domestic T20 teams from across all the Test playing nations had a shot at the tournament, but it was dominated by IPL franchises. However, after 2014 the tournament found no takers and despite calls from fans to revive it, there hasn't been any concrete effort to bring back the tournament.

Bruce hits 345 for third-highest score in NZ first-class game
March 6 (Reuters) - Big-hitting batsman Tom Bruce recorded the third-highest score in New Zealand first-class cricket on Thursday with a superb 345 for Central Stags against Auckland Aces. Only Bert Sutcliffe has made higher scores in a single first-class innings in New Zealand, notching 355 during the 1949-50 season and a national record 385 during the 1952-53 season for Otago. Bruce, who has played 17 Twenty20 International matches for New Zealand, resumed his knock on 212 on day two of the Plunket Shield contest in Auckland and brought up the triple century with a tight single off his 379th delivery. The 33-year-old finally fell after facing 401 balls after nearly 9-1/2 hours at the crease, having hit 36 boundaries and six sixes. The record for the highest score in first-class cricket belongs to West Indies great Brian Lara, who scored an unbeaten 501 for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994.
