NFL great Chad Johnson on the unusual way he saved money

Listen and subscribe to Opening Bid on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube, or wherever you find your favorite podcasts. When it comes to saving a buck, there are legends, and then there is NFL great Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson, who lived in the team facility for two years before being busted. 'I was very financially conscious and didn't care,' he told Yahoo Finance Executive Editor Brian Sozzi on the Opening Bid podcast during the Cannes Lions festival (see video above; listen below). This embedded content is not available in your region. Johnson played for 10 seasons as a wide receiver with the Cincinnati Bengals and for one season with the New England Patriots. In 2001, he signed on to the Bengals for $3.09 million, and in 2007, he signed a $34.85 million six-year extension. Johnson was frugal from the get-go as he sought to not go broke like many of his fellow celebrity sports stars. 'I don't come from much,' he said. 'Went to college, bounced around from school to school, and I [got] to an NFL stadium. I finally [got] drafted. My childhood dream finally [came] true.' For many athletes, managing money can prove challenging. ProFootball Network reports that the average annual salary of an NFL player is $2.8 million. Yet a Sports Illustrated article revealed that in 2009, 78% of NFL athletes faced bankruptcy or other financial stress around two years into their retirements. Within 12 years of retirement, one in six were expected to go bankrupt, according to the article. Culprits included a lack of financial literacy, bad investments, lifestyle creep, and paying for things that don't ultimately serve a greater financial good, such as an entourage. Now-infamous examples of athletes getting themselves into financial hot water include former wide receiver Andre Rison of the Cleveland Browns, who went broke despite nearly $20 million in earnings, and former quarterback Michael Vick, who played for the Atlanta Falcons and ended up with prison time for a dogfighting scandal. Vick declared bankruptcy and managed to somewhat extricate himself from the scandal by playing with teams such as the Jets and Steelers. The phenomenon isn't new, either. Johnny Unitas, who had a storied career as a quarterback, retired in 1991. Unitas invested $3.5 million in a tech company that was thought to be promising and instead went belly up. Unitas had to declare bankruptcy as a result. When Johnson was drafted, he took up a real estate agent's offer and toured several impressive potential homes. But they didn't meet his expectations. 'I think to myself, there's really no point,' he said. 'This really makes no sense.' What made better sense for Johnson was staying in the stadium facility. 'They have everything I need there: showers, cafeteria, players' lounge." His secret couldn't last forever, though. After two years, '[head coach] Marvin Lewis came in and realized, 'Well, how the hell are you always here first,'' he said. By that time, Johnson was headed for his third NFL season, and Lewis had some advice. 'He said, 'It's time to be a man. You're grown. You have responsibilities,'' said Johnson, who then got his own place. Johnson's legacy includes telling upstarts, 'There's no need to show off. Whoever you're trying to impress, they've already googled how much you make,' he said. 'The value is in your name.' Luke Fahey leads Mission Viejo High to own passing tournament title

Mission Viejo High's offense is Luke Fahey's now — and it might be one that's hard to stop if Saturday was a sneak peak of what's to come. A drive into Mission Viejo's first pool game of the 30th edition of its seven-on-seven passing tournament, the senior quarterback wasn't satisfied. Mission Viejo failed to score against Oceanside, a drop causing Fahey, wearing a relaxed-fit shirt and shorts, to yell toward his team. Advertisement 'Offense, over here,' Fahey called out to his teammates as he hustled off to the sidelines. The next five drives ended in the same way, the budding college football prospect — holding offers from Ohio State, Stanford and Indiana — dotting passes to his younger wide receivers on the regular, a trend that would continue throughout Saturday on Mission Viejo's way to a 35-23 tournament final victory over Mater Dei. Fahey is ready to take the next step. He split reps with Drai Trudeau two seasons in a row, and learned how to become a leader sitting behind Kadin Semonza as a freshman. Mission Viejo coach Chad Johnson said playcalling was up to him Fahey, who picked up on his successes and helped his teammates through their mistakes. 'It's his turn to take over,' Johnson said. 'He's the leader of our team. Every single break we have is led by him. He's another coach on the field.' Advertisement Read more: Freshman quarterback Evan McCalister is Valencia's latest 'secret weapon' Fahey pulled over a freshman teammate to the side midway through a game Saturday, helping explain to him the intricacies of routes so that he'd better understand what to do in a game. With standout wide receiver Vance Spafford unavailable, Johnson said, it was Fahey's turn to teach. After passing for 17 touchdowns and 1,638 yards as a junior, Fahey could be set for a big senior year for the Diablos. 'When we come out here, we want to be the best,' Fahey said. 'We want to do everything right, 100%, no matter what it is, no matter who we play.' Advertisement Saturday, Fahey and Mission Viejo were the best — but he was not the only quarterback to showcase his skill in seven-on-seven action. Mater Dei, with Dash Beierly out of the picture, primarily split the series between JSerra senior transfer Ryan Hopkins and junior Furian Inferrera (Beierly's backup in 2024). Hopkins, more of a prototypical pocket passer, seemed to have a strong connection with star tight end Mark Bowman — a passing display between the duo that was featured early in Mater Dei's contests. Mater Dei coach Raul Lara said that Hopkins, a Wisconsin commit, and Inferrera, a Minnesota commit, are battling for the starting position. 'The two kids that are battling out for the first spot at quarterback, I just love their competitiveness," Lara said. "They're both buddies. It's neat to see.' Crean Lutheran quarterback Lucas Wong. (Benjamin Royer / Los Angeles Times) Among younger quarterbacks, Crean Lutheran freshman Lucas Wong emerged poised and controlled in the pocket — enjoying a standout moment Saturday when he tossed a 30-plus yard touchdown pass on the last play of regulation to defeat Huntington Beach 21-19 in one of its five games. Advertisement 'We saw a lot of confidence in him,' Crean Lutheran coach Rick Curtis said, adding that expected starting quarterback Caden Jones was out for the tournament. 'We said, 'Hey, let's put his feet for the fire, and we'll see what he can do.' He's doing a great job today.' Huntington Beach quarterback Brady Edmunds, listed 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds despite being two years from fulfilling his current Ohio State commitment, was far and away the most physically imposing quarterback in the tournament. Edmunds' touch on his passes was hit or miss Saturday — Huntington Beach scoring the third fewest points in pool play — but his power behind every throw kept the Oilers in every contest. La Habra quarterback DJ Mitchell. (Benjamin Royer / Los Angeles Times) One of the sneakier standout back-and-forth games ended in a tie — thanks to La Habra junior DJ Mitchell and Oaks Christian sophomore Treyvone Towns Jr. matching one another blow for blow. Advertisement Mitchell ended the dueling programs' pool-play game with a touchdown pass and two-point conversion as the time limit expired to secure a split. 'We practice it every day,' Mitchell said. 'Two-minute drill — I know how to execute, make my reads and just hit it. Hit a touchdown.' Both Mitchell and Towns appear primed for breakout years as they grow into their respective frames. Etc. Corona Centennial primarily used Dominick Catalano as its quarterback in Mission Viejo. Catalano backed up Husan Longstreet — now at USC — last year. … Corona Centennial quarterback Dominick Catalano poses for a picture during the Mission Viejo passing tournament on Saturday. (Benjamin Royer / Los Angeles Times) San Juan Hills senior quarterback Timmy Herr, one of a couple southpaws at Mission Viejo, was accurate and controlled, much like he was last year for the Stallions and coach Rob Frith. Mater Dei third-string quarterback Trevor Scott is a left-hander standing 6–foot-4, whose skill set showed rawness as well as potential. Lara said the seven-on-seven tournament was a perfect place for Scott to get his feet wet against Southern Section competition. … Advertisement San Clemente won the St. John Bosco passing tournament, defeating the hosts in the final. … Junior quarterback Deshawn Laporte led Burbank to the title at the Simi Valley tournament, defeating the hosts in the final and taking down Sierra Canyon and Chaminade along the way. Ice Spice's NFL star boyfriend reveals which NBA superstar played matchmaker

New York Jets star Sauce Gardner has revealed that NBA legend LeBron James helped play matchmaker with his rapper girlfriend Ice Spice. Ice Spice and Gardner hard launched their relationship back in April with a bathroom selfie before appearing together courtside at a New York Knicks playoff game against the Boston Celtics. The duo first met in April 2024 however during a taping of James' 'The Shop' that co-starred Gardner, Ice Spice, fellow rapper Travis Scott, and Chad Johnson, per TMZ. Gardner and Ice Spice had been romantically linked for months prior to their official announcement, with the pair staying in touch since being in James' vicinity. Ice Spice has been associated with the sports world since before meeting Gardner, as a member of Taylor Swift 's squad. Ice Spice has been in attendance at the last two Super Bowls, sitting next to Swift as she watched boyfriend Travis Kelce compete. Gardner is one of the most lauded defensive backs in the NFL with the Jets ever since coming out of college at Cincinnati. Yet, Gardner has yet to taste postseason success in New York, with hopes of that trend changing this season with new head coach Aaron Glenn. Gardner is expected to receive a huge contract over the next few seasons, as his rookie deal is set to expire at the conclusion of 2026. Ice Spice and Gardner were both born in the year 2000, with the NFL star being coy on talking about his relationship with the rapper. Yet, he did speak on her being from New York and him having a professional career in the Big Apple bringing them closer. That happiness started due to James bringing the pair together for a talk show.

Shannon Sharpe Charge Means 'Likely' End at ESPN, Predicts Dan LeBatard

Shannon Sharpe Charge Means 'Likely' End at ESPN, Predicts Dan LeBatard originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Baltimore Ravens Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe was large and in charge, the former NFL superstar riding high on ESPN and and on his podcast, which was to be the centerpiece of a summer tour. Advertisement But now he's on hiatus from the network and the tour for his popular Nightcap podcast. And along with that comes the rumor that the "hiatus'' might be permanent. First up ... 'We've decided to postpone the Nightcap tour,' Sharpe said (h/t in a recent episode of the podcast. 'We look forward to seeing you guys in the summer of 2026. It's going to be even bigger, even better. But Ocho (partner Chad Johnson) and I have come to the conclusion that this is the best thing as of right now, was to postpone the tour. "We look forward to seeing each and every one of you in 2026.' The logic is obvious, as this update is delivered at when Sharpe is occupied by a $50 million lawsuit alleging sexual assault and other claims. Advertisement Notably, his lawyer has said in the wake of the accuser's filing of the civil complaint that Sharpe offered 'at least $10 million' to settle the case. While Sharpe has stepped away from his star-turn work on ESPN's First Take. ... he has continued to appear on his series of podcasts on both Club Shay Shay and the Nightcap show. The complaint, filed in a Nevada state court, alleges the legendary NFL star committed assault, sexual assault, battery and sexual battery, and engaged in the intentional infliction of emotions distress during a 'rocky consensual relationship' that lasted nearly two years with a woman more than 30 years younger than him." In denying the allegations, Sharpe has said, 'My statement is found here and this is the truth. The relationship in question was 100% consensual. At this juncture I am electing to step aside temporarily from my ESPN duties. I will be devoting this time to my family, and responding and dealing with these false and disruptive allegations set against me. Advertisement 'I plan to return to ESPN at the start of the NFL preseason. I sincerely appreciate the overwhelming and ongoing support I have received from my family, fans, friends and colleagues.' That sounds like a plan ... but former ESPN big shot Dan LeBatard doesn't see it happening that way ... at all. 'We probably all know at this point that Shannon Sharpe is not likely to ever work at ESPN again, right? I think we can reasonably assume Shannon Sharpe would like it to look like he has a chance to return,' said Le Batard on his Tuesday's episode of The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz. 'I don't know if you can be Disney and allow any of what happened there.' What 'happened there' is a lawsuit, disturbing audio clips, a multimillion-dollar settlement offer and some all-around nastiness in terms of the behavior of the legendary Sharpe. Advertisement ESPN has been sort of sitting back and watching this thing unfold ... but if LeBatard is to be believed, Bristol might be about to act - and fold the whole thing up.
