'Borderlands 4' Will Allow Players To Mute Claptrap With Audio Slider

Fans of Gearbox Software's looter shooter Borderlands would undoubtedly recognise its mascot, CL4P-TP (better known as Claptrap). Love or hate the annoying robotic companion, the franchise's latest outing, Borderlands 4 , is set to include an option to mute him completely, introducing a dedicated Claptrap volume slider. Claptrap has been a series staple since it began in 2009, appearing in all the games as an NPC (non-player character), and even as one of its playable Vault Hunters in 2014's Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel . The character is known for his endless banter that can be equal parts endearing and annoying, which was probably what led to the developers including an audio adjustment setting in their upcoming sequel. 'I wrote some lines just for this feature and it includes maybe the dumbest most niche reference to a certain terrible accent in a certain classic immersive sim,' wrote Borderlands 4 narrative director Sam Winkler in a post on X/Twitter in response to another post by streamer Chadly on Claptrap's dedicated volume slider. When several users pointed out that Winkler shouldn't have 'caved to Claptrap haters', the developer joked that he 'pitched that you should be able to put him from 0% to 200% but i think the government said no.' While the inclusion of a Claptrap voice slider might seem like a mere inside joke, its existence does allude to the team taking a step back in terms of the game's comedic element, especially since its previous outing, 2019's Borderlands 3 , was heavily criticised for its writing, which many thought tried too hard to be funny and ended up feeling out of touch. This falls in line with the team's wider goal of bringing the series back to its roots, delivering a more grounded narrative experience while simultaneously ramping up gameplay with expanded systems and new gun manufacturers. Now with its dedicated Claptrap slider, it remains to be seen how big a role the character will play in the sequel, as it approaches its release on 12 September 2025 for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Kevin is a reformed PC Master Race gamer with a penchant for franchise 'duds' like Darksiders III and Dead Space 3 . He has made it his life-long mission to play every single major game release – lest his wallet dies trying. Borderlands Borderlands 4 claptrap Gearbox Software
