NDMC to turn Lutyens' Delhi into open-air museum with sculpture trail, art park, symposiums

Soon, taking a stroll through the tree-lined avenues of Lutyens' Delhi may feel like walking through a living gallery. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is set to transform a swathe of the capital's heartland—stretching from Mandi House to Kasturba Gandhi Marg—into a 'sculpture art district', with striking, large-scale installations created by some of India's most acclaimed sculptors. NDMC to turn Lutyens' Delhi into open-air museum with sculpture trail, art park, symposiums Fifteen towering sculptures, each between 10 and 15 feet tall and cast in stone, stainless steel or bronze, will rise at selected sites along cultural landmarks such as Copernicus Marg, the National School of Drama, FICCI Auditorium and Triveni Kala Sangam. These works will be paired with ambient lighting and detailed plaques, turning everyday commutes into encounters with contemporary art. The initiative, part of a broader push to embed art in public spaces, will also see the launch of an international sculpture symposium and a dedicated sculpture garden inside Nehru Park, NDMC vice-chairman Kuljeet Chahal announced on Tuesday at a press conference. 'We want to take art beyond galleries and museums and bring it to the streets, where everyone can experience it,' Chahal said. 'With the art district, the sculpture park, and the symposium, we hope to position Lutyens' Delhi alongside globally renowned art destinations.' A committee headed by Harsh Vardhan Sharma, former chairperson of the National Gallery of Modern Art's advisory committee, has been formed to oversee execution. 'Just as the Central Vista has been transformed under the Prime Minister's vision, we're extending that ethos of rejuvenation into surrounding zones,' Chahal said. The first phase of installations is expected to begin within three months, with completion slated for later this year. So far, eight prominent artists have confirmed participation, and the NDMC is in talks with several others. Among those on board are Raghav R Kaneria, Ved Nair, Biman B Das, Rajendra Tikku, K Radhakrishnan, and Arun Pandit. The legacy works of Satish Gujral and Nagji Patel will also be represented, Chahal said. 'Alongside all this, the NDMC will host an international sculpture symposium, featuring 15 artists—10 from India and five from abroad—who will create new works in a live studio workshop in New Delhi, which will be featured in sculpture garden,' Chahal added. The garden is likely to come up inside Chanakyapuri's Nehru park. A 'National Painting Symposium', inviting 15 eminent painters from across the country will also be held in September and the resulting artworks will be showcased at various NDMC venues to enhance public spaces. These pieces will later be displayed in the upcoming sculpture garden at Nehru Park in Chanakyapuri. A national painting symposium is also scheduled for September, with 15 celebrated painters contributing works that will eventually be displayed across NDMC venues to liven up public spaces. To support this cultural momentum, the civic body has established an Urban Arts and Culture Forum through a council resolution this year. The forum will roll out an annual calendar of festivals, including Bhakti Naad, classical music concerts, open-air cinema, and art flea markets, with events hosted at landmark locations such as Central Park, Lodhi Art District, Talkatora Stadium and Khan Market. Chahal said spaces in Khan Market and Nehru Park will also be earmarked for young artists to showcase and sell their work. 'The Srijan Art Gallery in Nehru Park is expected to open this month, giving emerging talent a platform,' he said.

Lutyens' Delhi To Get Sculpture District

New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council unveiled its cultural renaissance plan, beginning with the launch of a pilot project to transform the area from the Mandi House roundabout to the Copernicus Marg-Travancore House stretch till KG Marg into a sculpture art district. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The work will start in Oct-Nov. The stretches will showcase works by 15 distinguished artists, including Gujarat's Raghav Kaneria, Kerala's KS Radhakrishnan, Delhi's Ved Nair, Arun Pandit and Biman Bihari Das, and Jammu and Kashmir's Rajendra Tikku at selected spots with illumination, beautified surroundings and descriptive plaques in phase I. Works representing the legacies of the late Satish Gujral and Nagji Patel will also be present. The initiative aims to make notable artistic works accessible to the public, beyond the confines of museums and art galleries, said NDMC vice-chairman Kuljeet Chahal, who is working on the project from the beginning. "The initiative to promote art and culture in Lutyens' Delhi aligns with the Prime Minister's vision for Vikshit Bharat by 2047. The sculpture art district will span across key cultural landmarks, including Mandi House, National School of Drama, FICCI Auditorium, Shri Ram Centre, India Gate-National Gallery of Modern Art, Hyderabad House, Travancore Bhawan and Triveni Kala Sangam," he said. "Eight artists have given confirmation and large-scale sculptures, each ranging from 10-15 feet in height, will be installed," Chahal said. The sculptures will be made of bronze, stone or stainless steel with a lifespan of 100 years with limited maintenance. To ensure quality and contextual relevance, NDMC has formed an advisory committee under former NGMA chairman Harsh Vardhan Sharma. An art symposium will be held featuring both national and international sculptors, who will create artworks for a proposed sculpture park in Nehru Park. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It will also have creations of pioneering sculptor Ramkinkar Baij. Fifteen distinguished sculptors, including five from abroad, will take part in it. "Many of them are recipients of Padma and other national awards," said Chahal. The projects are components of NDMC's broader strategy to establish Lutyens' Delhi as an artistic centre, comparable to renowned global art cities such as Yorkshire and London, with an allocation of Rs 40 crore, 1% of the civic body's total budget. Several embassies have also expressed their willingness to participate in these initiatives. A national painting symposium, inviting 15 eminent painters from across the country, will also be invited to participate in a creative residency. The resulting artworks will be showcased in a curated exhibition and later displayed at various NDMC venues to enhance public spaces with rich visual storytelling. A site will be identified at Khan Market to help younger artists display and sell their artworks. The recently renovated Srijan Open Art Gallery in Nehru Park, to be inaugurated in July, will let young artists or national awardees display their work. NDMC is also working to sign an MoU to organise music, dance and folk art, and puppet and theatre shows. "Many forms of art are confined to galleries or closed spaces and are inaccessible to the common man. This public art project will bring creativity into open spaces where people can see, experience and connect with it," said Chahal. "It will also inspire students and the younger generation to learn, engage and take pride in India's cultural wealth. These efforts will significantly boost cultural tourism and create opportunities for global cultural exchange. "

Mohali: VB records ex-Akali leader Aulakh, businessman Chahal's statements

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has intensified its investigation against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with a disproportionate assets case linked to drug money laundering worth over ₹ 540 crore. Both Aulakh and Chahal were arrested in 2015 for their alleged roles in the Bhola drug cartel but were acquitted of all charges by a CBI court in Mohali in 2019. (HT photo for representation) Majithia was arrested on June 25 from his residence in Amritsar under the Prevention of Corruption Act and remains in vigilance custody. He is scheduled to be produced in court on July 2. On Monday, former Akali leader Maninder Singh Aulakh, also known as Bittu Aulakh, who is now with the BJP, and Amritsar-based businessman Jagjit Singh Chahal recorded their statements against Majithia at the vigilance office in Sector 68, Mohali. Speaking to the media after his deposition, Aulakh said the case dates back to 2013 and alleged that law enforcement failed to act decisively at the time. 'Had the police investigated properly then, the truth would have come out much earlier. We even demanded a CBI probe,' he said. Aulakh added that investigators questioned him about financial transactions, benami properties and any joint assets with Majithia, all of which he denied. He called for the questioning of former SSP Hardayal Mann to shed light on the matter and accused former ED deputy director Niranjan Singh of bias in the earlier probe. 'If anyone is involved in drug trafficking, they should be punished. But innocent people like me and Chahal have been falsely implicated. Our children's futures have been ruined and Chahal's parents suffered immensely,' he said. Clarifying his past association with Majithia, Aulakh said they had cordial ties until 2010 but never owned any property together. Chahal, who owns three pharmaceutical companies in Himachal Pradesh — MBP Pharmaceuticals and Montek Bio Pharma in Baddi, and Tulip Formulations in Damtal — echoed Aulakh's concerns. He said the investigation finally appears to be moving in the right direction. 'Until now, it was all political drama. Five or six SITs were formed over the years, but none took the case seriously. For the first time, officials seem determined to uncover the truth,' Chahal said. He reiterated his opposition to drug trafficking and called on chief minister Bhagwant Mann to initiate a thorough probe into the 2013 drug racket. 'If we are guilty, we are ready to face the consequences,' he added. Both Aulakh and Chahal were arrested in 2015 for their alleged roles in the Bhola drug cartel but were acquitted of all charges by a CBI court in Mohali in 2019. Over the past five days, the vigilance bureau has also recorded statements from former Punjab DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, former ED deputy director Niranjan Singh and former MLA Amarpal Singh 'Bonny' Ajnala.

Search for Maharashtra's next chief secretary

Mumbai: Sujata Saunik, the state's first woman chief secretary, is retiring today. A feisty officer, Saunik handled the administration with ease while tackling some tricky issues in the government. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will now pick the next chief secretary who will head the state government's administrative wing. The top five in contention, based on seniority, are revenue secretary Rajesh Kumar, secretary, ministry of social justice Rajesh Aggarwal, home secretary Iqbal Singh Chahal, Mumbai civic chief Bhushan Gagrani and secretary, ministry of youth affairs and sports, Meeta R Lochan. Of them, Aggarwal and Lochan are on central government deputation and unlikely to return to the state. This leaves Rajesh Kumar, Chahal and Gagrani. While Rajesh Kumar is the seniormost, who is set to retire in August, Chahal and Gagrani seem to be the top two choices. According to the CM's aides, Fadnavis prefers Gagrani while deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde is keen on the selection of Chahal, who was in charge of his chief minister's office (CMO) during his tenure as the CM. Though Fadnavis as chief minister can pick the officer of his choice, he may prefer to come to a consensus with his two deputies, Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Will Fadnavis go by seniority or a consensus candidate or an officer of his choice? Time will tell. Sujata Saunik, the state's first woman chief secretary, is retiring today (June 30) after handling the administration with ease while tackling some tricky issues in the government. (Anshuman Poyrekar/HT PHOTO) Air of anticipation Now that the government has scrapped the decision making Hindi a mandatory third language, will Uddhav and Raj Thackeray come together? The proposed July 5 joint rally was cancelled and is being turned into a victory rally. Leaders from both Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS who are in favour of reunion of the two cousins think the 'fight for Marathi' is a perfect platform for the Thackerays to come together. In anticipation of the reunion, the ground level cadre and even second rung leaders of both the parties had started mingling together at several places. Senior Sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab and senior MNS leader Bala Nandgaonkar appeared together at a programme organised by Marathi TV channel ABP Majha on Saturday. When they were asked how it felt to sit together after years, Parab replied: 'Who says we were not meeting?' He then explained to the surprised audience: 'We still have a case against us which was lodged when we staged protests after Narayan Rane quit the party (in 1995). We have to attend court hearings together. These are old relations and they never broke.' Royal arrangement The national level conference of estimates committees of state legislatures held in Mumbai last week was in the news for controversies. It began in the backdrop of the Dhule episode when police seized ₹ 1.8 crore cash at a state government guest house from an official attached to the estimates committee of the state legislature. The estimates committee monitors the work being done with the exchequer's money. Shiv Sena (UBT) demanded a probe into whether the money was a bribe paid by contractors and meant for members of the estimates committee. The committee chairman Arjun Khotkar denied any connection with the cash. Towards the end of the two-day conference, images of guests being served meals in silverware went viral. The silverware was said to be rented for ₹ 550 a piece, according to reports. Several legislators felt if the extravaganza was needed, especially when Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in his speech insisted on spending each rupee of the exchequer carefully. Crorepati driver of a Sena MP Eyebrows are being raised over three acres of prime land in Sambhajinagar city gifted to Javed Rasul Shaikh, a driver of Shiv Sena's Sambhajinagar MP Sandipan Bhumre. Mujahid Khan, a lawyer who claims to have contested a case for Mir Mohammad Ali Khan, an heir of Salarjung who served as the Nizam's prime minister, has said that he was promised three acres of land by Mir Mohammad in exchange for fighting the latter's case for a disputed property. When he went to claim the land, he was told it was gifted to Javed Shaikh who is also Bhumre's driver. The lawyer has now lodged a complaint with the police and Economic Offences Wing is probing it. Meanwhile, Bhumre has distanced himself from the episode, saying what his driver does in his personal life is not his concern. Many are now wondering why a person who owns land worth crores chooses to work as a driver. NCP's Nitesh Rane Ajit Pawar led NCP's Ahilyanagar MLA Sangram Jagtap is in the news for his communal remarks. He seems to have taken a leaf out of BJP minister Nitesh Rane's book. His remarks came at a time when his boss Ajit Pawar was trying to reaffirm his secular credentials by intervening in the issues faced by Muslim community ahead of Bakr Id. An irked Pawar told mediapersons that what Jagtap said was not in line with the party's ideology. Pawar summoned Jagtap on Tuesday but the latter did not rush to Mumbai immediately citing he was busy with wari (annual procession) of Warkari sect. There are speculations that Jagtap is building bridges with BJP. But does Fadnavis want a Nitesh Rane clone?
