UPDATE: Coroner ID's Champaign shooting victim
Update at noon CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The 32-year-old man who died following a shooting in Champaign early Friday morning has been identified by the Champaign County Coroner. Human remains found in wooded Springfield area, Coroner says According to Coroner Laurie Brauer, 32-year-old Martez L. Jones Jr. of Urbana died following the shooting in the 1900 block of W Bradley Ave. that occurred at approximately 12:36 a.m. on July 4. After a brief time in critical condition and following an emergency surgery, Jones was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana at 2:10 a.m. An autopsy has been scheduled, and this death is currently being investigated by the Champaign Police Department and the Champaign County Coroner's Office. Champaign Police were dispatched to the 1900 block of W Bradley Ave. after multiple reports of a shooting with injuries were received at 12:36 a.m. on July 4. As officers searched the area for evidence of gunfire, a short time later, a 32-year-old Champaign man arrived at an area hospital by personal transport. Bodycam footage showing shooting of machete-wielding Macon man released The man was in critical condition and was immediately taken to surgery, but he succumbed to his injuries. The initial investigation indicates that the man was outside of a business when multiple shots were fired. The person or persons responsible for the gunfire then fled the area, and the victim was transported to a hospital. On top of the man's injuries sustained, damage has also been reported to several vehicles. At this time, officers are continuing to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may be of investigative assistance. Any person or business in the nearby area that has exterior surveillance camera systems is urged to notify the police department. Crime Stoppers seeking tips in attempted $3,200 theft from Champaign Meijer
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department is asking for help through Crime Stoppers in finding the people who stole $800 worth of merchandise from Meijer, but tried to get away with four times more in value. Officials said the theft happened the night of May 28. At approximately 9:12 p.m., three people walked into Champaign's Meijer at 2401 North Prospect Avenue and loaded several totes with merchandise, which they then put into a cart. One of the subjects was wearing a black and yellow Meijer jacket, and they pushed the cart outside and met up with the others. Two teens hurt, one critically, in Champaign shooting Sunday night The total amount of merchandise they had was more than $3,200, but loss prevention staff confronted them and recovered 75% of what the trio tried to steal. Officials said they still got away with $800 worth of merchandise. The trio was recorded on camera as the theft happened. They were described as: A male of unknown race, 26-35 years old, approximately 5′ 3″ to 5′ 9″ tall with an average build. He was wearing a black and yellow Meijer jacket, a black cap, a surgical mask and khaki pants A Black male, 26-35 years old, approximately 5′ 3″ to 5′ 9″ tall with a slender build. He was wearing a back hoodie and blue jeans, and he had a gray and black beard and a mustache A Black female, 26-50 years old, approximately 5′ 3″ to 5′ 9″ tall with a slender build. She was wearing a black hoodie, gray sweatpants, sunglasses, and had short gray hair. Champaign man hospitalized in Saturday night shooting
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A 21-year-old Champaign man was hurt after a shooting on Saturday. Officers with the Champaign Police Department responded to the area of Giboney and Tower Streets around 10:40 p.m. after a report that shots had been fired nearby. Police were able to locate an area with evidence of gunfire in the 1400 block of Clock Street. 22-year-old Danville man dead after motorcycle crash Around the same time police were searching for evidence, a man who had been shot walked into an area hospital with wounds in the arm and torso. Police said the man received medical treatment and is hospitalized in stable condition. After investigating, police learned that the 21-year-old was driving through an alley near Clock Street when unknown subjects fired at his vehicle, hitting him in the process. Police were able to find one vehicle that was damaged in this incident. Champaign police remained in the area for several hours to collect evidence, and search for witnesses and video footage that could help the investigation. No arrests have been made as of Sunday afternoon, and the investigation is ongoing. Champaign Police looking for tips in $500 theft from Kohl's
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department is asking for help through Crime Stoppers in solving a case of retail theft. The theft happened Nov. 19 at the Kohl's on Convenience Center Road. Officials said that a man walked into the store just after 9 a.m. and hid several items in a duffel bag. He then walked out of the store, making no attempt to pay for the items he selected. The stolen merchandise was worth nearly $500. UPDATE: State Police name victims, release new info in Shelby Co. car vs. train crash The suspect was recorded on security cameras; he appeared to be a Black male wearing a navy-blue Adidas sweatshirt and white sneakers. He left the area in a gray sedan, possibly a Hyundai Elantra. Anyone who has information about this crime, such as the identity of the thief, is asked to submit their knowledge to Champaign County Crime Stoppers. Champaign Police, Crime Stoppers looking for tips in fragrance theft
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department is investigating an act of retail theft, and officials are asking for help through Crime Stoppers in finding the person responsible. The theft happened on Feb. 3 at Market Place Shopping Center. Officials said that at 6:40 p.m., a woman entered the Sephora store and went directly to the fragrance area. She put several gift sets and travel sprays in her basket and then walked out with no attempt to pay for them. Champaign Police investigating overnight shots-fired incident The stolen items were valued at over $700. The suspect was described as a Black woman last seen wearing a tan coat with fur around the hood, a black shirt, black leggings and brown furry boots. She entered Sephora carrying the basket she used in the theft.
