Cyclist jailed a week over collision with jogger who suffered serious injuries

SINGAPORE: A man who was cycling at East Coast Park failed to see a jogger in front of him and crashed into her, causing her to suffer serious fractures with neurological consequences. Edmund Kwek Jun Wei, 34, was given a week's jail on Friday (Jun 20), after he pleaded guilty to a charge of causing grievous hurt through a negligent act. The incident happened in the early morning of Oct 22, 2024. At around 6.20am, Kwek was riding at about 22kmh along a cycling path with a speed limit of 25kmh. The lights were still lit. Kwek was looking down at one point and failed to see the jogger, 48-year-old Tan Jo-Ann. When he looked up, he saw Ms Tan's back before colliding into her. Kwek was flung off his bicycle, while Ms Tan fell to the ground. When Kwek attended to the victim, she was unable to respond to his questions. He called for emergency services. Ms Tan was taken to Changi General Hospital where she was found to have serious injuries, including fractures on her right skull, the base of the skull and a possible fracture behind her nose. She was discharged on Nov 6, 2024, 16 days later. The injuries affected her sense of smell, taste and left ear hearing, and Ms Tan reported experiencing vertigo when bending forward. An examination showed that she had partial hearing loss in her left ear. Her sense of smell was still lacking as of January this year. Ms Tan attended around 19 sessions of speech therapy until March this year and her speech has improved, with no residual motor deficits, court documents stated. Kwek's lawyer Bozy Lu from Han & Lu Law Chambers told the court that her client had been training for a marathon when the incident occurred. Ms Lu said Kwek tried to offer compensation to Ms Tan, but she declined. The defence lawyer added in mitigation that Kwek was remorseful and pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity he had.

Ryde temporarily suspends 5-star driver who left sick passenger stranded for over 10 hours

SINGAPORE: A Ryde customer was left stranded after a driver who accepted his booking became uncontactable and remained stationary for more than 10 hours, raising questions about the ride-hailing platform's cancellation policy. The incident, which occurred on the night of May 24, was shared with Stomp by a frustrated passenger named Kenneth. According to Kenneth, the ordeal began at 11:15pm when he booked a ride through Ryde. While a driver accepted his request, the vehicle did not move from its location and the driver could not be reached. 'I waited for a driver who accepted my request that remained stationary and uncontactable for over 10 hours, from 11.15pm till 9.14am the next day,' Kenneth told Stomp . Unable to cancel and rebook the ride without incurring a $6.50 cancellation fee, Kenneth said he was effectively left in limbo. 'I ended up having to wait forever,' he said, 'I could not go home to take my medication when I was already feeling sick, having just been discharged from Changi General Hospital.' He also expressed frustration over Ryde's cancellation policy: 'Ryde should review it. Why punish your customer? If we cancel after three minutes, it must be for a genuine reason.' In response to queries from Stomp , a Ryde spokesperson said the company had launched an internal review following Kenneth's report. 'We take all feedback seriously and have conducted a thorough internal review,' said the spokesperson, who described the incident as an isolated case involving a single trip. The company confirmed that Kenneth's account had no history of issues. According to Ryde, the driver in question holds a consistent five-star rating and has no record of past violations. However, the spokesperson added that the driver has been 'temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure pending further investigation.' 'We have requested a formal explanation and will reinforce our standards of professional conduct,' the spokesperson said. The company also noted that its support team had responded to Kenneth with 'findings and clarification' and remains open to further communication if needed. See also 2 drivers hospitalised after lorry hits taxi and flips over Ryde emphasized that it maintains strict platform safeguards, including real-time monitoring, feedback review, and regulatory compliance. The company said it is now reviewing the incident to assess potential improvements. 'Based on current findings, we believe this is an isolated case,' the spokesperson told Stomp, 'We remain committed to fair, timely resolution of all rider concerns and to continually strengthening trust across our community.'

Jail for man who stole from doctor, verbally abused police officer, crashed PMA inside hospital

Over a period of six months, a man embarked on a series of offences against public servants including a doctor, a police officer and a security guard. Lester Tan Jian Ming, 40, also admitted to speeding on his personal mobility aid (PMA) inside a hospital, which led to him crashing it against a wall twice. On May 30, Tan was sentenced to 13 weeks' jail after pleading guilty to six charges including for assaulting or using criminal force against a public servant, theft, mischief, committing rash acts and harassment. Five charges of a similar nature were taken into consideration during his sentencing. The court heard that on Sept 20, 2024, Tan was seeking medical treatment at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The prosecutor said Tan was under the influence of drugs at the time, but did not reveal which ones. As a doctor was attending to him, he reached into the front pocket of the doctor's uniform and stole her iPhone. On Feb 11, Tan was hospitalised at TTSH when he encountered a doctor conducting her rounds at 9am and asked her for his medication that had been prescribed by the Institute of Mental Health. When the doctor advised him to collect the medication from IMH, he became agitated and verbally threatened her. The doctor told a colleague about the interaction, and they called for police assistance. At about noon that day, Tan was discharged from the hospital and escorted out of the ward by two auxiliary police officers. He was using a PMA at the time. As he left the gantry of the ward, he sped off on his PMA and crashed into a wall. Undeterred, he sped off again and hit a dry wall near the lift lobby, causing more than $500 in damage. On Feb 26, Tan was arrested near Upper Boon Keng Road and taken to Changi General Hospital, as he was intoxicated on drugs. As he was in police custody, Tan's hands were restrained. His belongings were sealed in two polymer bags placed near his bed. Sometime around 3pm, he slipped out of his restraints and verbally threatened the police officer who was watching over him. He then grabbed one of the polymer bags to retrieve his mobile phone and got in a tussle with the officer, resulting in the bag being torn. After the officer called for backup, Tan began to hurl vulgarities and threaten another security officer.
