Colin and Justin: Using white wisely

Create Account The backdrop to our life in the city, and the existence we enjoy at North Star, our Cape Breton hotel, are different in so many regards. Against the urban sprawl, we reside in a predominantly grey scale condo, whereas the hotel management suite we inhabit in the Maritimes whispers a subdued, low key, aesthetic. But the latter wasn't always that way. Designing our Toronto pad in 2005 (with the courage of our own convictions 'cos we knew we'd be staying for the long term) we crafted a space that remains, to this day, as it was when envisioned back then. Arriving on the Atlantic coast (in 2021) we didn't know, at that moment, just how long our – now – annual summer sojourns would endure. We revealed the 'first fix' of our Cape Breton abode several years back, having whitewashed its formerly orange pine beadboard walls, and having rejigged the existing furniture. Today (having decided that our summer residency will endure indefinitely) we've taken the space to the next level by recovering our formerly grey sofas, adding white window blinds and specifying creamy dining chairs and pale wood furniture. It's all rather fresh, and it's all rather lovely. But enough about us. Let's shift gears to appraise how white could work for you. Whilst a potentially tricky science, we've rounded up some valuable counsel… With thousands of subtle variants, selecting a wall tone can be daunting, but we have two favourites, both by Benjamin Moore. First up? Chantilly Lace (seen here) an understated white with 'barely there' grey/blue undertones. The second, Cloud White, is slightly warmer with subtle yellow undertones. If you'd like to 'tame' an overly bright south or southwest facing room, opt for the former. If you'd like to 'warm' a north facing room, choose the latter. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Delicate whites with a suspicion of yellow work well when played alongside natural wood. Whites with a beige whisper evoke an altogether cozy look, whilst variants with hints of blue freshen proceedings, especially in bathrooms. Conversely, those with a soupcon of grey work well in kitchens where they complement stainless steel, shiny ceramics and glass. If you have pets or kids, white can be tricky, unless, that is, you're prepared to standby with a mop 'n' bucket. Furthermore, if you live in a neighbourhood where dust is a problem, white mightn't be a clever decision. Sometimes, too, you'll need give and take; perhaps you long for creamy carpet, but a happy compromise might be a white tiled floor and a washable rug? This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Regardless of the number of white elements in your project, texture remains crucial to create interest. A linen sofa played against a white wood chest, or a cut crystal lamp teamed with an open-weave neutral shade, may all share similar hues, but it's their myriad textures that add depth. When teaming whites, always consider the 'whisper'. If a particular pairing appears awkward, chances are it's because the undertones aren't complimentary. The simplest way to investigate 'whisper' in an apparently white accessory or paint chip is to hold it against a piece of pure white art store paper; this will reveal hidden undertones. Before chasing your white-on-white dream, consider illumination. Sunlight emits brighter tones during the first part of the day, though these will be cooler by lunchtime even if literal temperatures have risen. If your room's orientation is north, light will be bluish, but if it faces south, illumination will be slightly red. Rooms that face east will take on a yellow tone (especially before noon) whereas those that face west will witness reddish shades at the same time of day. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Incandescent globes generate a yellow hue, halogen bulbs a much fresher white light, and fluorescent tubes a range of cool blue tones. Prior to choosing paints, fabrics and finishes, view everything under all applicable light forms to appraise that which you have. However you elect to proceed, and however much white you decide to lavish across your pale-faced domestic landscape, one thing's certain; played properly, your 'all white on the night' scheme will work just as well at any time of day. It all comes down to having the courage of your own (decorating) convictions… Watch for Colin and Justin on Citytv's Breakfast Television and Colin and Justin's Sub- Zero Reno on Paramount Plus TV. Falakeyah added to Coronation field for Zarigana clash
Owen Burrows' unbeaten filly dazzled when winning the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket last month, putting herself in the picture for both the Oaks and the French equivalent which will be run at Chantilly on Sunday. However, after deciding against Epsom, a dirty scope ruled her out of France, with connections now taking the plunge to drop back to a mile with their supremely talented daughter of New Bay. This is eyecatching 👀 FALAKEYAH follows in the footsteps of future Oaks winner Taghrooda winning the @Betfred Pretty Polly Stakes in sparkling fashion ✨ — Newmarket Racecourse (@NewmarketRace) May 4, 2025 In a statement on the owners racing manager Angus Gold said: 'Jim (Crowley) has been saying all spring 'this filly has plenty of speed' and she showed that when she won at Newmarket on her first start of the year. 'Once we had decided not to stretch her stamina to a mile and a half in the Oaks, the next option was the Prix de Diane. However, she did not scope clean two weeks ago, so Owen and the team gave her time and sorted it out, but the net result was the timescale proved too tight to get her back to peak fitness for the Diane, especially with the travelling over to France. 'Owen feels she is now back to where she was before the dirty scope. He's very happy with her and together we feel the Coronation is the right race for her now. Jim believes she has the pace to be competitive at a mile at that level. She's definitely got a lot of class, and we are looking forward to Friday.' Falakeyah could ultimately prove the biggest challenge to Francis-Henri Graffard's Zarigana, the grandaughter of the great Zarkava who was awarded the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches in the stewards room at ParisLongchamp after a late tussle with Charlie Fellowes' Shes Perfect. Breaking: The French 1000 Guineas appeal has been dismissed and Zarigana keeps the race over Shes Perfect — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) May 21, 2025 Shes Perfect also stands her ground but is poised for the challenge of the Prix de Diane on Sunday, while the same applies to Aidan O'Brien's Bedtime Story and Merrily who also feature amongst the confirmations for Friday's Group One. Ballydoyle have also confirmed Exactly and January, while Ralph Beckett could be represented by 1000 Guineas fifth Chantilly Lace and the Amo Racing-owned Cathedral. Ollie Sangster's Flight and Simmering finished ahead of Chantilly Lace in second and third respectively behind Desert Flower at Newmarket and could leave below par efforts in the Irish version of the Guineas behind here. Meanwhile, Joseph Murphy's Cercene and Archie Watson's Duty First were two to thrive at the Curragh when third and fourth and are also amongst the Ascot possibles. Jane Chapple-Hyam's unbeaten York scorer Kon Tiki joins Falakeyah in being supplemented into the field at a cost of £46,000, while Ger Lyons' Red Letter completes the list of 15 going forward.
