Could the Boston Celtics sign Charles Bassey to a training camp deal?
Throughout the first three games of Las Vegas Summer League, Charles Bassey quickly endeared himself to Boston Celtics fans around the world. Currently, the Celtics frontcourt looks thin heading into the 2025-26 NBA season, and after some dominant showings, there was hope that Bassey could provide some depth and competition at the center position. However, after his third game with the franchise, Bassey left the Celtics' Summer League roster. He'd only been signed for the first three games in Vegas, reportedly due to other commitments. As such, Bassey's chance of earning an Exhibit 10 contract to continue fighting for a roster spot during training camp and preseason took a significant hit. During a recent episode of the "How 'Bout Them Celtics?" podcast, hosts Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance discussed whether Bassey could still be given an opportunity to challenge for a roster spot with Boston, or whether his tenure with the franchise is over before it even began. Bronny James and the Los Angeles Lakers' NBA Summer League team will face their Boston Celtics counterparts on Thursday evening, as they look to improve their 1-2 record in Las Vegas. The Lakers opened their Summer League campaign with an 87-85 loss to 2025 No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks, then bounced back with a 94-81 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. In their latest outing, James and the Lakers fell to the LA Clippers squad, 67-58. Despite the result, James shined against the Clippers with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 makes behind the arc. The performance provided promise as his sophomore year in the NBA approaches, looking more comfortable and confident than he had as a rookie. James split his rookie year between the Lakers' first team and G League affiliate as his father led the purple and gold to a first-round exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the playoffs. Bronny played in 27 games for the senior team and made 11 appearances for the Lakers, averaging just 2.3 points per game. So far in this tournament, James is clocking in 8.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game. Thursday's game against Boston will be immediately followed by the Lakers' showdown against the Denver Nuggets on Friday. The Celtics sit 10th in the Summer League standings with a 2-1 record ahead of Thursday's showdown. Power forward Charles Bassey leads the pack with 15.3 points per game through the three contests, while first-round rookie Hugo Gonzalez (pick No. 28) is averaging 11 points, 5.5 boards, and 4.0 assists per game. Celtics Summer League standout making strong case for roster spot
With the departures of Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kornet, and likely Al Horford, the Boston Celtics find themselves incredibly thin in the frontcourt. As the offseason rages on, the franchise might have stumbled into a viable center option in Summer League. Though he wasn't on the roster initially, Charles Bassey finds himself suiting up for the Celtics in Las Vegas. He's managed to turn heads with his play, making a strong case for a roster spot in the process. Advertisement Over the weekend, Bassey put together his best outing of Summer League thus far. In a 94-81 win over the New York Knicks, he notched 22 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks off the bench. As a fourth-year player in the league, Bassey is dominating Summer League the way an experienced player should. In light of their need for rotation-level big men, the Celtics should be taking a good long look at the former second-round pick. Bassey started his career with the Philadelphia 76ers, who drafted him 53rd overall in 2021. He's since spent the past three seasons with the San Antonio Spurs in a backup role. Bassey appeared in 36 games last year, posting averages of 4.4 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and 0.8 BPG. Advertisement Standing at 6-foot-10 with good athleticism, Bassey has the makings of an effective rim-running center at the NBA level. While his numbers don't jump off the page at the pro level, he could just need the right situation. Having a defined role on the Celtics could help kickstart the 24-year-old's career. With no clear option at center for next season, Boston will have to get creative with their frontcourt rotation in 2026. Seeing how he's looked in Summer League for them, the Celtics might have lucked into a cost-effective rotation piece.
