Mark Labbett issued warning about The Chase bosses to Anne Hegerty over big decision

More info The Chase star Mark Labbett issued a warning to co-star Anne Hegerty as she faced a major decision on the ITV show. Mark, 59, was one of the two original Chasers on the show alongside Shaun Wallace. They were joined in the second series by 66-year-old Anne. During the initial 10-show run, Mark became known as The Beast, a moniker Anne says he offered to producers as the French version of his surname. With the imposing character starting to take off, Anne says producers decided she and Shaun should also be given a nickname. Shaun, 65, became known as The Dark Destroyer, while Anne was given the title The Governess. Although the quiz master revealed she could have adopted a very different persona on the show. She says producers originally intended to call her 'The Headmistress', which prompted a word of warning from Mark and an impromptu change from show host Bradley. Speaking on the Towards Understanding podcast, Anne said: 'They wanted me to be The Headmistress, and I was like, 'Erm, okay, sounds great.' And I remember Mark saying to me, 'You should choose your own nickname, otherwise they will impose one on you that you don't like'. (Image: ITV) 'So I thought, 'Fine, fine, I'm going to be The Headmistress,' and then during rehearsals, it was a year since the boys had done the show and I hadn't done it at all, and during rehearsals, Bradley, I noticed, started calling me The Governess, and I said to producers, 'Could I be called that instead?' 'I think what appealed to me about it is that a governess is much more of a free agent. A governess is like Mary Poppins, she can do whatever she likes, while a headmistress is bound by the board of governors, she is essentially a salaried employee, whereas a governess can take off when the wind changes. So I thought I'd rather be a governess I think.' Anne went on to explain that she decided to base the character of The Governess on one of her grandmothers, an aunt, and the headmaster's wife at her secondary school. She said: 'I think originally I wanted her to be a bit nastier and creepier. (Image: Getty) 'I wanted her to be a bit more like Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter. Somebody a few years ago, an American actually, said my character was [Harry Potter character] Professor McGonagall-ish and I thought, 'Yeah, she has moods of being from Umbridge to McGonagall', and I'd rather be McGonagall really, I mean she's a goodie for one thing.' Professor McGonagall was one of the teachers in Harry Potter who worked alongside the young wizard and Albus Dumbledore to defeat evil wizard Lord Voldemort. Meanwhile Dolores Umbridge was known for her harsh treatment of the children in JK Rowling's series. Anne has previously revealed there was also a more x-rated reason why she chose the moniker The Governess. When asked about the name by former Countdown host Nick Hewer, she replied: 'Well, originally I was going to be called The Headmistress and then during rehearsals, Bradley started calling me The Governess. 'I said to the producers, 'Can I be called that instead?' I think I said, 'It's more kinky'.'

Last year, she admitted playing a beach beauty, famed for her red swimsuit, was much harder than she was given credit for. "Running on sand is really hard," she told UPI. "Running in and out of the water is really hard. "It doesn't always look cool, either, so trying to make it look good and do it well is definitely not easy. I don't think anybody ever thought any of it was hard." ITV The Chase's Anne Hegerty admits she 'hopes' no more co-stars join show

More info The Chase star Anne Hegerty, also known as The Governess, has revealed the show's unique payment structure and explained why she doesn't want any more Chasers joining her. Despite having an estimated net worth of £3.2 million thanks to the show's popularity, Anne stated that the Chasers do not have a fixed salary and instead get paid per episode. At the TV Choice Awards, Anne explained why the Chasers might not welcome a new team member. When asked about the possibility of a new Chaser, she replied: "Well we do always hope not." The I'm a Celebrity star further explained: "We are paid per show, so we're not on a salary. "It's not as if they're going to up the budget and add a new salary, a new Chaser would just mean the same number of shows shared between more people - so less money for everyone. So, hope not!" Although a new Chaser would mean less money for the existing ones, Anne mentioned she doesn't hold a grudge against Darragh Ennis, also known as The Menace, who joined the show in 2020. Anne stated: "You know, Darragh has been a very good new addition, he's very popular, and that's worthwhile." "We know each other, and certainly on Beat the Chasers we tend to hang out a lot, because we're all there at the same time," she shared. Anne remarked to the Mirror last November about her surprisingly thrifty nature, explaining: "I'm half Scottish. We don't spend money and, being a fat person, I can only buy from certain places. "I like my money sitting in my bank and representing a bit of security. I don't see the point in sloshing money around. I'm not frugal, I'd actually say I'm mean." She also flies in the lap of luxury via first class or business for travel, and not shying away from 'Club Med' holidays to serve her quiz-travelling agendas. Viewers best know quizzer Mark Labbett - aka The Beast - for ITV quiz show The Chase. A source said: "The Beast threw a strop the other week and walked off as filming overran and he wasn't happy about it. "It was a really long day, around 11 hours, and none of them expected it to go on for so long. Advertisement "The others put up with it, but Mark isn't one to hide what he was feeling. "He made it clear he'd had enough and stormed out, leaving filming altogether. "Bosses were scrambling behind the scenes and everyone was really stressed about whether he would come back, but luckily after getting a good night's sleep, Mark calmed down and returned to set the next day." The Sun has approached a rep for Celebs Go Dating for comment. Advertisement Mark, 59, joins stars including Kerry Katona and S Club's Jon Lee in the latest Celebs Go Dating line-up. He has been part of The Chase since the show launched on ITV in 2009.
