Wheatley update: More gas smelt, fire crews on site
Monitoring continues at the Wheatley library where residents could smell gas. The site seen in Wheatley, Ont. on July 2, 2025. (Chris Campbell/CTV News Windsor) Chatham-Kent fire crews are on scene at 35 Talbot Street West in Wheatley due to another strong gas smell. Emergency crews continue monitoring the situation. The Municipality of Chatham-Kent released a statement on the matter, alerting the public of the venting. It reassured that there is no risk to public safety at this time. Wheatley residents allowed back home after gas odour investigation

Chatham-Kent-Leamington MPP Trevor Jones says the 'all clear' has been given in Wheatley after a portion of the town was evacuated due to a gas odour investigation. Speaking on AM800's Mornings with Mike and Meg, Jones said residents of 60 homes evacuated Thursday afternoon and were allowed to return around 9 p.m. 'It could have been potentially a little pocket of gas that came out from an old water well around the public library area of Wheatley. However, luckily around 9 p.m. last night, the last data was processed, readings showed no threat to public safety and residents were invited to come back to their homes.' Chatham-Kent fire officials posted an update on social media on Friday morning: Gas release has been stopped No gas detected in nearby homes No current threat to public safety Power fully restored All roads are now open According to Chatham-Kent emergency official, hydrogen sulfide, the gas that caused an explosion in the village four years ago, was detected just before 2 p.m. yesterday. Search continues for missing individual in Chatham
Chatham-Kent police are searching the area around the Thames River looking for a missing teenage girl. June 23, 2025. (Chris Campbell/CTV News Windsor) Police in Chatham-Kent say a search is underway for a missing person in the area of the Third Street Bridge. In an updated release issued Monday, the Chatham-Kent Police Service said it is actively investigating a report involving a missing individual. The coordinated search effort includes aerial and marine support from both Chatham-Kent police and the Ontario Provincial Police, along with marine assistance from Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue and ground support from the Emergency Response Team. Officers were seen combing the Thames River earlier in the day, and police say the investigation remains ongoing. No additional details have been released, as police cite privacy concerns for those affected. The Chatham-Kent Police Service says it appreciates the community's support and understanding, and will provide updates as appropriate.

Horse dies in Chatham-Kent barn fire
Firefighters responded a barn fire on Eighth Line around 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. (Source: Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue) Chatham-Kent fire officials say one horse died after a barn fire south of Chatham. Firefighters responded a barn engulfed in flames on Eighth Line around 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday. When they arrived firefighters learned there might be livestock in the barn. All the horses, except for one, were found safe in a nearby pasture. The fire was contained to the barn. Damage is estimated at $400,000.
