It was my turn to bring snacks for the preschool class and I was panicked at the grocery store. I sent in bananas and chips for each child. It seems the teachers thought I chose poorly. Since then, I've learned to stop chasing gold stars. I used to think snack duty was no big deal, just another harmless checkbox on the endless preschool to-do list. But that illusion evaporated the week I found myself standing in a grocery store aisle, gripped by analysis paralysis in front of the granola bars. Was peanut butter too risky? Were raisins still a choking hazard for this age group? Did natural flavors count as artificial? What even was a healthy snack in 2025? Naturally, I had to meet them. We planned the interview in Alexandria, their hometown. My trip to Alexandria was smooth, until I found myself wandering the streets with a tripod like a lost vlogger. I was sure I'd made it to the right spot, excited and ready, but a few 'Where are you?' calls later, it turned out I was standing outside the wrong branch of the PlayStation café. Classic. Thankfully, the actual place was just ten minutes away, and luckily, the guys were still mid-FIFA, decked out in what they confidently described as 'Alexandrian style,' all bright colours and mismatched patterns. It was a vibe. We tried to start the interview, but it took us a solid 10 takes just to record a simple intro. Every time we started, someone would burst out laughing, usually them, sometimes me. 'We're not serious people,' Sasa shrugged. 'We can't even fake being serious.' Eventually, we pulled it together. 'I'm Mostafa Islam Mohamed Ali Hassanein Mohamed,' Sasa announced dramatically, 'but you can call me Sasa.' 'I'm Youssef Ramadan Ali,' added his partner-in-dance-crimes, 'aka Cheetos.' PepsiCo stops production at another Frito-Lay site
PepsiCo has halted production at a Frito-Lay processing plant in southern California after five decades of operations. In a brief statement, PepsiCo confirmed the end of manufacturing operations at its Rancho Cucamonga facility. However, warehouse, distribution and transport teams will continue to operate at the site. 'We are truly grateful for all the support over the last five decades from our Rancho Cucamonga manufacturing team as well as the local community. We are committed to supporting those impacted through this transition and we are offering pay and benefits to impacted employees,' the owner of Lay's potato chips-maker added. PepsiCo did not disclose the number of employees affected by the decision nor the specific products manufactured at the site. It remains unclear whether production will be shifted to other facilities or removed from the network. PepsiCo operates more than 30 Frito-Lay manufacturing plants across the US, also producing brands such as Cheetos, Doritos and Fritos. Earlier this year, the company closed a Frito-Lay plant in Liberty, New York, resulting in 287 staff being laid off. In May last year, PepsiCo reduced the workforce by one-third at a facility in Middletown, New York. In the first quarter ending 22 March, PepsiCo Foods North America, which includes Frito-Lay and Quaker Foods, generated net revenue of $6.21bn, a 2% decline from the same period in 2024. It accounted for approximately 34.7% of PepsiCo's total net revenue of $17.91bn. In the management commentary released alongside the results in April, top PepsiCo executives said its savoury snack performance, primarily Frito-Lay, remained 'subdued'. The company intends to prioritise 'disciplined commercial initiatives' in North America.
