ERODE: A devotee got a Rs 2 note from the premises of the Chellandi Amman Temple in Erode district 55 years ago. The devotee couldn't find the person who lost the money. The devotee didn't bother to hand it over to the temple authorities who could in turn give that to the person who lost it, in case he or she came in search of it.
After 55 years, the person who picked up the money might have felt guilty for failing to hand it over to the temple authorities. He made amends by putting Rs 10,000 in a hundial at the temple recently with a note mentioning the 55 years old reason.
The century-old Chellandi Amman temple is managed by the Hindu religious and charitable endowment (HR&CE) department. It is situated in the Nerunjipettai area near Ammapettai.

On Friday, temple officials opened the hundials and counted the currency notes with the help of staffers, officials, students and others. They found a white envelope among the currency notes. When they opened the envelope, they found Rs 500 notes to the tune of Rs 10,000 and a letter in it. In the letter, the devotee stated that they got a Rs 2 note from the temple ground and he could not locate the person who lost it. "I took the money as I could not return it to its rightful owner.

Now, after 55 years, I have returned it to that temple. I am donating Rs 10,000 in exchange for the Rs 2 I found."
A T Paranjothi, HR&CE Erode district joint commissioner, said the letter did not have the name and address of the person.
If the inflation rate is considered, Rs 2 in 1970 is equal to around Rs 102 in 2025. But the person put Rs 10,000 in the hundial, perhaps hoping that that would be the proper interest for this 55-year-old 'dishonesty.'
