WNBA Player Shows Off Gnarly Injury After Getting Elbowed In The Face
WNBA Player Shows Off Gnarly Injury After Getting Elbowed In The Face originally appeared on The Spun. Not every hit and knock that WNBA players take results in simple bruising. Sometimes the impacts are a lot more visible - and gnarly. Advertisement During yesterday's game between the Washington Mystics and the Las Vegas Aces, Mystics star Jade Melbourne took an elbow to the face by Aces star Chelsea Gray. Unfortunately, the point of Gray's elbow struck Melbourne right in the mouth and the results were very nasty. Melbourne was visibly bleeding on the court as the strike caused her to lose part of a tooth. She had to leave the game while Gray was charged with a flagrant foul. Fortunately, Melbourne appeared to be in good spirits when she returned to the court after getting medical treatment. But as cameras panned to her it was clear that the Australian basketball star and Olympic bronze medalist was now sporting a very noticeable gap in the front of her mouth. WNBA fans were stunned by the scene and some believe that Gray owes Melbourne in a big way for doing that to her. Advertisement "Chelsea Gray you need to pay for Jade Melbourne's dentist. Oh my god," one user wrote on X. "So sad for her! I hope she's ok!" wrote another. "Did I just watch Jade Melbourne of the Mystics get a tooth knocked out?" a third wrote. "Nah the commentators wrong af how they reacted to Jade Melbourne." Mystics' Jade Melbourne chips tooth in gruesome injury after getting elbowed by Aces' Chelsea Gray
Washington Mystics guard and Olympic medalist Jade Melbourne lost part of a front tooth after taking a wild elbow to the mouth in Thursday night's win over the Las Vegas Aces. Melbourne was injured in the first quarter when she tried to drive past a screen from Aces guard Chelsea Gray. Gray's elbow made direct contact with Melbourne's mouth, and as she bent over in pain. A tooth appeared to fall onto the court. A bloodied Melbourne was taken off the court, and although she remained sidelined for the remainder of the game, she did join her team on the bench. Gray was assessed a flagrant foul. Mystics coach Sydney Johnson said after the game that Melbourne did require stitches, Yahoo Sports reported. Despite the initial shock of the injury, Melbourne appeared in good spirits after the game. Teammate Georgia Amoore shared a post on Instagram that showed Melbourne smiling with a bloodied mouth and chipped tooth and two thumbs-up. Melbourne, an Australian basketball player who earned a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, is averaging 6.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists this season. It was not immediately clear if she would miss any additional time because of Thursday's injury. The Mystics secured a 94-83 win even without Melbourne and the team's leading scorer, Brittney Sykes, who was sidelined for the second straight game with a lower leg injury. The WNBA has seen an uptick in physical plays this season. Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has been on the receiving end of many of those plays, but Melbourne's injury Thursday ranks as one of this season's most serious. Las Vegas Aces Make Big A'ja Wilson Announcement on Friday
Las Vegas Aces Make Big A'ja Wilson Announcement on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Aces have had a slow start to their season thus far. The 2023 WNBA champions currently have a 5-6 record and have lost two out of their last three games. Advertisement The Aces going 1-2 over the past week coincides with the injury of three-time WNBA Most Valuable Player winner A'ja Wilson. The 6-foot-4 center was recently placed in the concussion protocol after suffering a head injury in Las Vegas' 97-89 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on June 11. She ended up sitting out the next three games, and there's no denying that the Aces have missed the services of their superstar. The good news for Las Vegas is they're finally getting Wilson back for Friday's matchup against the Seattle Storm. The team took to social media before tip-off to announce the return of the six-time All-Star in the squad's active roster. In a subsequent post, the Aces announced that Wilson will return to the starting lineup alongside Chelsea Gray, Jewell Loyd, Jackie Young and Kiah Stokes. Advertisement It's going to be the usual starting five for Las Vegas as they look to get back to winning ways in a home game at Michelob ULTRA Arena. This is an undeniably big boost for the Aces, who will finally see Wilson return to action after missing a considerable stretch. In eight games played so far this season, the two-time WNBA champion center has averaged 20.9 points, 9.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.6 blocks in 32.0 minutes per contest.
