Bangladesh Air Force's F-7 BGI that crashed was a Chinese copy of the MiG-21. Here's what we know about the jet

A Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crashed into a school building in Dhaka's Uttara area on Monday, killing at least 16 people—most of them children—and injuring dozens more. The jet plummeted onto the Milestone School and College campus, erupting in flames upon impact. What Is the F-7 BGI Fighter Jet? The aircraft involved in the crash was an F-7 BGI, a Chinese-made fighter jet considered an advanced variant of the Chengdu J-7. Ironically, the J-7 itself was a Chinese clone of the Soviet-era MiG-21, one of the most mass-produced fighter aircraft in history. While China discontinued the J-7 series in 2013, it had begun exporting the upgraded F-7 BGI version to countries like Bangladesh before that. The F-7 BGI was specially developed by China's Chengdu Aircraft Corporation as a low-cost, multi-role fighter tailored to the needs of the Bangladesh Air Force. Bangladesh acquired 16 F-7 BGI jets between 2011 and 2013 as part of its effort to modernize its aging fleet. Key Features of the F-7 BGI According to information available on Wikipedia , the F-7BGI features include - Top Speed: Mach 2.2 Weapons: 5 hardpoints for air-to-air missiles, laser- and GPS-guided bombs, drop tanks Missile Compatibility: Can be equipped with PL-5, PL-7, and possibly PL-9 short-range AAMs Bomb Load: Can carry up to 3,000 lbs of bombs and unguided rocket pods, including Chinese laser-guided bombs Radar System: KLJ-6F radar Cockpit: Fully digital glass cockpit with 3 multifunctional HUD displays and HOTAS (hands-on throttle and stick) controls Airframe: Based on the J-7G2 design with a double-delta wing, enhancing lift and preventing stalls at high angles of attack Service Ceiling: 17,500 meters (57,420 feet) G-Load Tolerance: +8 g / -3 g Thrust (Afterburner): 82 kN Maneuverability: Said to be more agile than most MiG-21 variants and many contemporary fighters in its class

Pakistan to showcase JF-17 at prestigious Royal International Air Tattoo in UK

Listen to article Pakistan is set to display three of its aircraft at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in the United Kingdom, held from July 18 to 20 at RAF Fairford, according to RIAT's official website. This year, Pakistan will showcase the JF-17 Thunder, C-130 Hercules, and IL-78 aircraft. Notably, the JF-17 makes its debut at the event, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan's aviation industry. The JF-17, developed jointly by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and China's Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC), is a multi-role combat aircraft designed to be cost-effective compared to other fighters like the F-16. It first flew in 2003 and has since undergone several upgrades. The current JF-17C features advanced radar, avionics, and a more powerful engine, making it one of the Pakistan Air Force's most reliable aircraft. Pakistan has steadily increased its global presence through such aviation showcases, with the JF-17 Thunder drawing particular attention. The aircraft is already in service with the air forces of Myanmar, Nigeria, and Azerbaijan.

Photos of China's J-20A stealth fighter spark speculation about military parade debut

New images of China's J-20A stealth fighter have begun circulating on Chinese social media, with the photographer claiming the jet, also known as the Mighty Dragon, is rehearsing for a September military parade debut. Advertisement The photos of the J-20A were shared on Wednesday alongside photos of the J-35, another fifth-generation Chinese stealth fighter . In recent weeks, advanced aircraft have repeatedly been seen flying in formation across the country, including several identified as J-20A jets, according to social media posts. China will hold a grand military parade on September 3 in Beijing to mark the 80th anniversary of its victory in World War II. It is expected to unveil new weapons at the event, including aircraft not seen in public before. An earlier sighting of the fighter, reported by The War Zone last September, showed the clearest image yet of a J-20A prototype bearing serial number 2052 in characteristic yellow primer paint on a Chengdu Aircraft Corporation runway in southwest China. According to the defence news site, this confirmed earlier speculation that the jet had undergone its most significant upgrades yet, with the installation of domestically developed WS-15 turbofan engines The images shared this week show the fighter using modified diverterless supersonic inlets (DSI) – a type of jet engine air intake – with smaller compression bumps than earlier versions, optimised for the advanced airflow characteristics of the WS-15 engines. These smaller bumps are expected to improve both stealth and aerodynamic performance while supporting the engine's higher pressure ratios and greater mass flow demands.

Meet J-36, China's 6th-Generation fighter jet: Capable of dropping heavy bombs, long-range covert strike and...

New Delhi: Pictures of the massive 'J-36' stealth fighter developed by China's Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) emerged on Chinese social media, offering a glimpse into its advanced design. Referred to as the JH-XX, the aircraft is believed to be part of a new generation of long-range, strike-capable platforms being tested by the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). The leaked pictures showcase a distinctive canopy design and, notably, a side-by-side seating arrangement and three open ventral weapons bays are visible in this fighter plane. It is important to note that despite the visual evidence, the exact role of the J-36 within China's military doctrine remains unclear. According to some analysts, the J-36 could serve as an air superiority fighter, while others suggest it is intended as a deep-penetration strategic bomber. Here are some of the key features of J-36 stealth fighter: According to the images available online, J-36 stealth fighter is likely to have a side-by-side two-seat cockpit. The J-36 appears larger than the J-20, suggesting it's not just a fighter jet but also capable of acting as a strategic nuclear bomber. The picture available on the social media reveals that the outline of the dual canopy and a dorsal air intake designed to feed the aircraft's central engine. Reflections on the cockpit glass suggest large Head-Up Displays (HUDs) in front of both seats. China is likely developing the J-36 as a multi-role deep penetration platform, meaning it can drop heavy bombs while operating like a fighter. The J-36 is believed to possess very long-range covert strike capability, similar to America's NGAD platform. According to the reports, there are three engines present in the aircraft. This is possibly the same model used in the J-20 stealth fighter. The presence of three engines supports the notion of a heavier payload and longer range, essential for strategic strike missions across contested environments.
