(Video) Apple TV+ Unveils Trailer For New Historical Drama 'Chief Of War' Starring Jason Momoa

After teasing fans back in May, the first official trailer has finally been released. Recently, Apple TV+ has unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming historical drama 'Chief of War', starring, written by and executive produced by Jason Momoa. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Hawaiian islands, the nine-episode series—based on true events—follows warrior Ka'iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he fights to unify the islands ahead of Western colonisation in the late 18th century. Chief of War will make its global debut on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes dropping on Friday, 1st August 2025, followed by new episodes every Friday through to 19th September. Told from an Indigenous perspective, Chief of War is a passion project for creators Momoa and Thomas Pa'a Sibbett, who both share Native Hawaiian heritage. The series features a predominantly Polynesian cast, led by Momoa alongside Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, newcomer Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale'o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka and Benjamin Hoetjes. The series is produced for Apple TV+ by FIFTH SEASON and Chernin Entertainment. Momoa directs the season finale and serves as executive producer, with Doug Jung acting as showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Thomas Pa'a Sibbett, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook and Brian Andrew Mendoza. Justin Chon directs the first two episodes and also serves as executive producer. Other executive producers include Anders Engström, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence and Tim Van Patten. The original score for the series was composed by Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, who wrote the theme music and co-produced the score for all nine episodes alongside composer James Everingham. The score was created during Zimmer's tenure with Bleeding Fingers Music, the Emmy Award-winning and BAFTA-nominated composer collective he co-founded in 2013.

Ronda Rousey Biopic Finds Its Director in EUPHORIA's Augustine Frizzell — GeekTyrant

Netflix has officially tapped Euphoria pilot director Augustine Frizzell to helm the long-developing Ronda Rousey biopic, and it's shaping up to be a knockout behind the scenes already. The film is based on Rousey's bestselling memoirs My Fight/Your Fight and Our Fight , which she co-wrote with her sister Maria Burns Ortiz. Chernin Entertainment is producing, and Deadline reports that Frizzell, who is a fan of Rousey and no stranger to combat sports, was the clear choice after an impressive pitch. 'Frizzell had read both memoirs before she got the call to meet on it and knew right away this job needed to be hers,' sources say. Turns out, Frizzell not only respects Rousey's story, she actively trains in Muay Thai herself. What makes this project even more intriguing is how Rousey's own journey into storytelling set it all in motion. While working with WME's story group to study screenwriting structure, Rousey reportedly read dozens of scripts… then sat down and wrote her own in just seven days. Her agents were stunned. According to Deadline: 'The script was soon taken to market, with Chernin moving fast to land a meeting and come on as producers.' There was a clear priority to bring on a female director for the project, and after meeting with several candidates, Frizzell quickly rose to the top. The collaboration seems like a perfect fit. Frizzell has Netflix ties already, having recently directed half the episodes of The Boroughs , the upcoming series produced by the Duffer Brothers ( Stranger Things ). This biopic has been a long time coming. Originally set up at Paramount in 2015 following the release of My Fight/Your Fight, the rights eventually lapsed due to studio shakeups. Netflix ultimately picked it up, with exec Michelle Evans, reportedly a longtime Rousey fan, championing the project internally. Now, the film will draw not just from Rousey's first memoir but also Our Fight , which dives deeper into some of the most personal and difficult chapters of her life. That includes her crushing loss to Holly Holm, her mental health struggles, early signs of head trauma before MMA, and the complexities of her relationship with coach Edmond Tarverdyan. This is shaping up to be an interesting project.

A24 Greenlights Kane Parsons' ‘The Backrooms,' with Chiwetel Ejiofor to Star

'The Backrooms,' the viral YouTube horror series that has amassed nearly 200 million views since debuting in 2022, is officially becoming a feature film. A24 has greenlit a movie based on the property directed by 19-year-old series creator Kane Parsons, who will be the youngest director in A24 history when the film enters production this summer. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve will star in 'The Backrooms,' which is a co-production between A24 and Chernin Entertainment. James Wan and Shawn Levy will executive produce through their Atomic Monster and 21 Laps banners, respectively. Roberto Patino is also a producer. Chernin Entertainment, part of The North Road Company, will co-finance alongside A24. The slow builds and homemade special effects helped the eerie videos build a loyal following. A24's feature take on 'The Backrooms,' which was first announced in 2023, has been cited as one of Hollywood's most significant investments in intellectual property that emerged from the internet. In Vol. 005 of the In Development newsletter from IndieWire's Future of Filmmaking, editor-in-chief Dana Harris-Bridson argued that Parsons represents the new archetype for indie film success in the 2020s. 'This sounds like a 21st-century riff on the Sundance wunderkind, but A24 didn't buy a short from a promising high school filmmaker. It bought an ecosystem,' she wrote of his success. 'Scalable IP, with a built-in fanbase. Proof of engagement. Potential for merch, spin-offs, and platform-native storytelling. It's a lot less romantic than the '90s story, in which credit-card debt is burned away by a life-altering festival premiere that sends buyers huddling in the lobby to craft eight-figure offers. However, we can't believe in that folktale if we also believe in the internet. Thirty years ago, a rapturous reception was the only tool distributors had to project future results. In reality, the digital revolution in filmmaking happened at the same time as all the other digital revolutions. Today, no one relies on analog instinct for pretty much the same reason that you don't have a landline.'No release date for 'The Backrooms' has been announced.
