Popular soda brand unveils surprising collaboration to rival Pepsi
Just a few years ago, drinking full-sugar soda was a daily habit for consumers. Traditional soft drinks dominated grocery store shelves and comprised a significant portion of most people's daily intake. But with the growing awareness around health and wellness and a bit of social media brainwashing, consumer preferences have shifted dramatically. This has increased demand for healthier alternatives and nonalcoholic beverages, especially those offering health benefits. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Prebiotic soda has become one of the fastest-growing segments in the beverage industry, so much so that even giants like PepsiCo have reported revenue declines in the U.S. market, once its most profitable client. These brands have experienced astronomical growth in just a few years, outdoing what even the most veteran companies achieved in decades by listening to consumers' demands. Image source: TheDriven by skyrocketing demand for healthier soda alternatives and gut-friendly drinks, PepsiCo (PEP) acquired Poppi for $1.95 billion in May. Despite being officially founded four years ago, Poppi achieved over $100 million in revenue in 2024, with a gross margin of 65%. This market a significant leap from its initial $30 million in sales back in 2020, placing it among the fastest-growing soda brands in the U.S. PepsiCo stated that this acquisition aligns with the company's short- and long-term strategy to meet changing consumer preferences and capture market share in the beverage space. Related: Pepsi to buy popular alternative brand to destroy rival This move comes at a critical time for PepsiCo, which has faced troublesome declines over the past few months. The company reported a 2% drop in its North American beverages division during the second quarter of 2025, highlighting a shift in consumer behavior. PepsiCo didn't take long to enter the soda market with its own innovation. On July 21, the company announced the launch of its first-ever prebiotic cola, available in Original and Cherry Vanilla flavors. This marks PepsiCo's first major innovation in the category in 20 years. Since its launch in 2018 with an initial investment of $100K, Olipop has become a force to be reckoned with. In only seven years, the prebiotic soda brand has reached a $1.85 billion valuation with profits of approximately $50 million, another testament to the growing consumer demand for functional health beverages. However, the competition is getting more challenging, which prompted Olipop to reveal a new partnership only a day after PepsiCo's prebiotic soda was launched. "This Better Not Be A Prank": The Internet Is Collectively Freaking Out About Pepsi's Latest Product Launch
If you've walked into any grocery store in the past year, you're probably well aware that prebiotic sodas have been dominating the industry lately as a "gut-friendly" fiber-packed alternative to traditional soda. According to the consulting firm, Future, the prebiotic soda market was valued at 262 million USD in 2024, with global sales expected to grow 7.6% in the next 10 years. The latest player to hop into the game is none other than Pepsi with its new Prebiotic Colas. But this isn't Pepsi's first dip into the alternative soda trend. In March of this year, they acquired Poppi, a popular prebiotic soda brand. PepsiCo's US Beverages CEO, Ram Krishnan, said that the acquisition "represents a compelling strategic fit within our short- and long-term vision for the future of beverages." It seems like the long-term vision has been realized with their newest launch, which comes in Original Cola and Cherry Vanilla flavors with 3 grams of prebiotic fiber, 5 grams of cane sugar, 30 calories, and no artificial sweeteners. Regarding the launch, Krishnan said, "Pepsi Prebiotic Cola represents the next leap forward in giving consumers choice, optionality, and functional ingredients in their cola experience." The brand hopes to still deliver the same Pepsi taste consumers know and love with a little gut-friendly twist. Pepsi It's safe to say Pepsi fans are pretty psyched. The Prebiotic Colas come in single 12-ounce cans and 8-packs and will be available online this fall and in stores early 2026. Pepsi Hungry for more? Pepsi Launches New Prebiotic Cola That Contains Fibre And No Artificial Sweeteners
PepsiCo has announced the launch of a new Pepsi Prebiotic Cola. This new beverage has the same iconic taste of Pepsi and comes with the added functional ingredient of 3 grams of prebiotic fibre. It also contains 5 grams of cane sugar, has 30 calories, and is free from artificial sweeteners. The Prebiotic Cola is launching in Original Cola and Cherry Vanilla flavours. The new Prebiotic Cola is designed to meet the changing consumer preferences for more functional ingredients. For the unversed, a functional ingredient is a bioactive compound added to food or beverages to provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. These ingredients are often included in food products to enhance their nutritional value. While overall soda consumption in the US has declined over the past 20 years, prebiotic sodas have lately gained popularity among health-conscious consumers due to their claims of supporting gut health. "From the iconic blue can, to the consumer-preferred Pepsi Zero Sugar, our portfolio has always adapted to the needs and flavour preferences of the consumer," Ram Krishnan, CEO, PepsiCo Beverages US, said in a press release. "Pepsi Prebiotic Cola represents the next leap forward in giving consumers choice, optionality and functional ingredients in their cola experience, without sacrificing the iconic Pepsi taste we're known for delivering. We can't wait for the world to try the taste of Pepsi Prebiotic Cola for themselves!" Pepsi Prebiotic Cola is packaged in 12 oz. single cans for trial and 8 packs of 12 oz. cans. Pepsi launches its own prebiotic soda, available in stores early 2026
Pepsi is hopping on the prebiotic soda bandwagon. PepsiCo announced its Pepsi Prebiotic Cola on Monday, July 21. One 12-ounce can of the new drink will contain five grams of cane sugar, 30 calories and three grams of prebiotic fiber. Pepsi Prebiotic Cola will be available starting this fall in Original Cola and Cherry Vanilla, according to a PepsiCo news release. Prebiotic soda has boomed in recent years with popular brands like Poppi, Olipop and Bloom. The soft drinks, served in bright, colorful cans, are promoted as healthy for the gut and better for consumers than traditional sodas. While dietitians agree with the latter, the drinks shouldn't be expected to cure gut health on their own. Pepsi Prebiotic Cola comes just a few months after PepsiCo announced the acquisition of Poppi for $1.95 billion and Coca-Cola announced Simply Pop, its own line of prebiotic soft drinks. Are prebiotic sodas like Poppi healthy? Here's what dietitians say When will Pepsi Prebiotic Cola be available in stores? Pepsi Prebiotic Cola will be available online this fall and in retailers in early 2026, according to a news release. The prebiotic soda will be available in single 12-ounce cans and 8-packs of 12-ounce cans. What is prebiotic soda? Prebiotic sodas first gained traction in 2018, with the release of popular brands Poppi and Olipop. Prebiotics are plant fibers that serve as food for the body's microbiome – the body's good bacteria, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Most prebiotic sodas contain between two to nine grams of prebiotic fiber per can, while the recommended daily value for fiber is between 25 to 38 grams per day, the Cleveland Clinic states. Is prebiotic soda good for you? The answer isn't so black and white and research remains premature. Prebiotic sodas are better than traditional sodas, but they shouldn't be expected to provide much gut-healing benefits, Jessica Alfano, a clinical dietitian at New York's Huntington Hospital, previously told USA TODAY. While a can of prebiotic soda won't make someone consume more than the recommended daily value of fiber, too much can cause bloating, diarrhea and gas, according to the Cleveland Clinic. To reach the recommended daily value for fiber, Alfano recommended eating kimchi, sauerkraut, fermented pickles and fruits and vegetables.
