GRS must have nothing to do with Umno: LDP

Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has called on Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to steer clear of any electoral alliance with Barisan Nasional-Umno in the coming 17th state election. LDP president Datuk Chin Su Phin pointed out the importance of maintaining good relations with the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, regardless of the state election outcome. 'It is imperative that the coalition or party that wins has an amicable relationship with its federal counterparts,' Chin said following a unanimous decision by the LDP Supreme Council, Sunday. He said the GRS is likely to negotiate seat distribution with PH for the state polls, but pointed out that the federal coalition must have genuine commitment to working with GRS. He suggested PH limit itself to contesting no more than 20 seats. Chin said that if negotiations fail, both coalitions may contest independently in a friendly match with government formation discussions taking place post-election. He expressed particular concern about DAP's ambitions to contest six to eight Chinese-majority seats, saying this could squeeze out Chinese-based component parties within GRS. Addressing Chinese voters specifically, Chin cautioned against supporting Parti Warisan despite strong local party sentiment in Chinese-majority constituencies. He said Warisan's limited appeal beyond Chinese voters particularly among the Kadazandusun community and in Malay seats makes it unlikely to form government even if it wins all six Chinese-majority seats. 'If Warisan fails to form the State Government, Chinese voters will inevitably be labelled as the opposition,' he said, urging the community to exercise wisdom in their voting decisions. He called for continued GRS governance, citing political stability and economic growth under the current administration, adding that the government changes typically result in policy shifts that deter investment and hinder economic progress for two to three years. LDP president Datuk Chin Su Phin said it is vital for any winning coalition to maintain a good working relationship with the federal government, currently led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim under Pakatan Harapan (PH). Kota Kinabalu: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Datuk Chin Su Phin called on the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) State Government to establish a 20 per cent quota system for Chinese Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) students seeking entry into the civil service and Universiti Malaysia Sabah. The proposal aims to address what Chin describes as considerable barriers faced by academically qualified Chinese UEC students in accessing public sector employment and higher education opportunities in the State. While acknowledging the Sabah Government's recent recognition of the UEC as a progressive step, Chin said symbolic recognition alone is insufficient without concrete implementation measures. 'Recognition alone is not sufficient. Without a structured and transparent quota system, Chinese UEC students will continue to face significant barriers,' Chin said in a statement, Wednesday. He said the proposed quota system is designed to address under-representation rather than grant special privileges, positioning it as a policy that reflects Sabah's multiracial identity and promotes unity across communities. He pointed out issues of talent drain, noting that limited local opportunities have forced many UEC students to seek education and employment outside Sabah or Malaysia entirely. 'Creating more pathways would help retain local talent and strengthen the State's future capacity,' he said. The proposal comes as part of broader discussions about educational equity and representation in Malaysia's public institutions, with particular focus on ensuring that students from Chinese independent schools have meaningful access to career opportunities in their home state. LDP calls for 20% quota for Chinese in civil service, UMS
Chin KOTA KINABALU (July 2): Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Datuk Chin Su Phin calls on the GRS-led Sabah Government to implement a 20% quota for Chinese Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) students to enter the civil service and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). He said this proposal reflects the Liberal Democratic Party's strong commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and ensuring that students from Chinese independent schools who take the UEC are given equal and meaningful opportunities to serve and succeed in their own State. 'The recognition of the UEC by the Sabah Government is a commendable and progressive move in acknowledging the value of Chinese education. 'However, recognition alone is not sufficient. Without a structured and transparent quota system, Chinese UEC students will continue to face significant barriers when it comes to entering the civil service or pursuing higher education at public universities such as UMS,' he said in a statement on Wednesday. Chin added many Chinese UEC students are academically qualified and capable of contributing meaningfully to the public sector and society, yet their access remains extremely limited. 'Implementing a 20% quota is a necessary step to correct this imbalance and to provide fair access and participation. This is not about granting privilege, it is about addressing underrepresentation through a fair and inclusive policy that reflects Sabah's multiracial identity,' he said. Chin said such inclusivity will help build a stronger sense of belonging and foster unity across communities. 'Additionally, the lack of clear pathways has driven many UEC students to pursue further education or employment outside Sabah or even Malaysia. By creating more opportunities for them here, we can retain our home-grown talent and strengthen our State's future capacity,' he said. Chin urged the Sabah Government to show leadership by going beyond symbolic recognition and enacting real policies that create access. 'A quota system for Chinese UEC students is a fair and practical step forward to ensure that no capable Sabahan is left behind in building our shared future,' he said.
