MALAYSIA-CHINA-ECRL MEGA RAIL PROJECT-GENTING TUNNEL-BREAKTHROUGH

Xinhua 13 Jul 2025, 18:46 GMT+10 (250713) -- KUALA LUMPUR, July 13, 2025 (Xinhua) -- This photo taken on July 12, 2025 shows a ceremony marking the breakthrough of the 16.39-kilometer Genting Tunnel of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) in Pahang state, Malaysia. The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), a mega rail project in Malaysia being built by the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), marked another key milestone on Saturday with the breakthrough of the 16.39-kilometer Genting Tunnel. The breakthrough represents a significant achievement in itself, situated beneath more than 750 meters of mountainous terrain, the company said in a statement following a ceremony to mark the occasion. ECRL Genting Tunnel breakthrough marks key milestone in Malaysia rail project

KUALA LUMPUR: The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project in Malaysia has achieved a major milestone with the breakthrough of the 16.39-kilometre Genting Tunnel, the longest and most technically challenging tunnel along its 665-km alignment. Built by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), the tunnel's completion marks the end of excavation works for all 41 tunnels in the rail network. Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook hailed the achievement as a testament to strong bilateral cooperation between Malaysia and China in railway engineering. 'The ECRL will be a game changer for passenger and freight movement, linking urban centres, ports, and industrial hubs while integrating with existing rail lines,' he said. Situated beneath 750 metres of mountainous terrain in the Titiwangsa range, the Genting Tunnel posed significant geological challenges, including water ingress, rock bursts, and six fault zones. Advanced tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and drill-and-blast techniques were deployed to ensure safety and efficiency. Chen Jianfeng, deputy general manager of CCCC Second Highway Engineering, highlighted the role of China's cutting-edge TBM technology in overcoming these obstacles. 'The method ensured stability in complex conditions while prioritising local talent development and knowledge transfer,' he said. Over 1,000 Malaysian workers were trained, with many sent to China for advanced technical instruction. With tunnelling completed, the project now advances to track laying, electrification, and station construction, maintaining its 2027 operational target. The ECRL will connect Port Klang to Kelantan, boosting economic growth in Malaysia's less-developed east coast. - Bernama

MALAYSIA-PAHANG STATE-RAIL PROJECT

(250601) -- PAHANG STATE, June 1, 2025 (Xinhua) -- People pose for photos at a ceremony to mark the installation of the first communication, information and signaling (CIS) systems of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) at the Kota SAS Station in Pahang state, Malaysia, May 30, 2025. The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), a mega rail project in Malaysia being built by the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), marked another key milestone on Friday with the installation of its first communication, information and signaling (CIS) systems at the Kota SAS Station in Pahang state. Designed to meet international standards, the CIS systems form a critical component of the ECRL's overall engineering system. These systems play a vital role in ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable railway operations through functions such as automatic train protection, traffic control, and real-time passenger information, CCCC said in a statement following a ceremony to mark the installation. First batch of Malaysian trainees for ECRL mega rail project head to China

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The first group of future maintenance workers for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), a mega rail project in Malaysia being built by the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), will soon head to China for specialized training, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said here on Tuesday. A total of 210 trainees are scheduled to leave on May 15. They will receive training in theoretical and practical aspects and gain real-world experience in operating rail systems, Loke said in a ceremony marking the launch and submission of Industrial Skills Training Program offer letters for the ECRL operations and maintenance phase. "Developing physical infrastructure is important to ensure we do not overly rely on external expertise in the long term. Our priority is to ensure job opportunities for our local talent," he said, adding that the trainees who complete the program will be guaranteed employment with the ECRL. For his part, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia needs to build domestic economic resilience by enhancing knowledge and expertise among its youth to better face global challenges. "Although we use foreign technologies, we must seek new methods, and this depends on our young people. With clear policies, it means we rely more on our abilities to revitalize local businesses, management and expertise," he said at the ceremony. The ECRL runs from Malaysia's largest transport hub, Port Klang, and travels across the peninsula to Kelantan state in northeastern Malaysia. The rail link is expected to greatly enhance connectivity and bring more balanced growth to the country by linking its less-developed region on the east coast to the economic heartland on the west coast upon its completion.

CCCC contributes RM12mil to train Malaysians for ECRL project

KUALA LUMPUR: China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has contributed RM12 million to sponsor Malaysian students under an industrial skills training programme for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said trainees under the Industrial Skills Training Programme (PLKI-ECRL) are guaranteed employment with the ECRL upon completion of their training. "Through this programme, locals are not only trained to contribute during the construction phase of the ECRL but are also prepared for roles in the operations and maintenance (O&M) phase," he said. Having begun during the construction phase, the PLKI-ECRL is now transitioning to support the upcoming O&M phase, with a target of benefiting 3,200 trainees through skills development and job opportunities.
