China-EU relations: rare earths, Taiwan discussed in Wang Yi's visit to embassy
China and the European Union should enhance mutual trust and stick to cooperation to elevate their ties to 'a new level', Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday amid widening trade tensions. Advertisement In a meeting with EU diplomatic envoys in Beijing, Wang said that China and the EU 'have both the responsibility and capability to provide much-needed stability and predictability to a world fraught with turbulence', according to a Chinese foreign ministry readout. 'Both sides should enhance mutual trust, properly manage differences, pool strengths, and elevate the comprehensive strategic partnership to a new level,' Wang said. The remarks were made during a gathering at the Polish embassy, before Poland's rotating presidency of the European Union comes to an end this month and ahead of the two-day China-EU summit in late July. EU leaders will travel to China for the summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing to mark 50 years of diplomatic ties. It will be the second successive EU-China summit in the Chinese capital, despite convention dictating that the location rotates. China slams EU ban on medical-device sales as trade-dispute list grows ahead of July talks
China has hit back at the EU's decision to exclude Chinese companies from the 27-member bloc's public tenders for multi-million-euro medical devices – the latest items on a growing list of trade disputes between Beijing and Brussels. 'The European side has disregarded the goodwill and sincerity that China has repeatedly conveyed through bilateral dialogues,' a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said on Tuesday. 'China is strongly dissatisfied with the decision and resolutely opposes it. 'China urges the European side to immediately correct its wrongdoings and will take measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.' Brussels' decision came as both sides were attempting to manage their trade differences – ranging from electric vehicles to cognac – in preparation for next month's China-EU summit set to take place in Beijing. But efforts have faced fresh challenges in recent weeks. China's commerce minister, Wang Wentao, and his European counterpart, Maros Sefcovic, held a video call after the von der Leyen episode, attempting to pull trade talks back on track.

Chinese and EU trade officials hold talks after von der Leyen outburst

China and EU schedule crunch talks to resolve economic deadlock
China and the European Union have agreed to hold a new round of trade talks to pave the way for a high-level leaders' summit next month, but analysts said it remained to be seen whether the two sides could resolve the impasse in their bilateral economic relations. The talks were announced by the European Commission following a meeting between China's commerce minister, Wang Wentao, and EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic on the sidelines of a World Trade Organization event in Paris on Tuesday. They are expected to lay the groundwork for a high-level summit slated for late July in Beijing, where European leaders will meet with President Xi Jinping. 'The two sides held focused, candid and in-depth discussions on pressing and important issues related to China-EU economic and trade cooperation,' China's Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on Wednesday. 'They also tasked their respective working teams to intensify efforts in preparing for this year's key bilateral agenda on the economic and trade front,' it added. Meanwhile, an EU spokesperson said on Tuesday that the bloc's 'overall objective remains to rebalance our trade and investment relationship with China and level the playing field'.
