Deftones Announce First Album in Five Years, Drop New Song

It's taken five years for a new Deftones album to come — and it's finally here. Today, the group announced that it will release the album Private Music on Aug. 22 via Reprise and Warner Records. Deftones also released the single 'My Mind Is a Mountain.' The artwork for Deftones' upcoming album features a bright green background with a white snake slithering over it. The group also shared the 11-song track list for Private Music, which includes songs such as 'Souvenir,' 'Cut Hands,' 'Metal Dream,' and 'Departing the Body.' Raskulinecz worked on 2010's Diamond Eyes and 2012's Koi No Yokan with the group. Deftones will celebrate the album with a show in Vancouver the night of Aug. 22, before stopping in cities such as Minneapolis, Buffalo, Toronto, Cleveland, Baltimore, St. Louis, Denver, Louisville, and Sacramento for their own tour and festival stops. For their own shows, Deftones will bring Phantogram and Idles on the road. Deftones released their last album, Ohms, in September 2020. The record features songs such as 'Genesis,' 'The Spell of Mathematics,' and 'Ceremony.' They toured that record in 2021 following the Covid-19 pandemic. Track List 1. 'My Mind Is a Mountain'2. Deftones To Deliver Their ‘Private Music' Next Month

Nearly 40 years into their career, Deftones are arguably more popular than they've ever been thanks to a fresh wave of late '90s/early 2000s nostalgia, a fanbase that seems to get younger by the year and the Sacramento, Ca.-reared hard rock band's biggest tour ever, which sold out venues such as Kia Forum in Los Angeles and Madison Square Garden in New York earlier this year. On Aug. 22, Deftones will enhance the celebration with the release of private music, their first album in five years. The 11-track effort (Reprise/Warner) was introduced today (July 10) with the single 'my mind is a mountain.' Sample it below. More from Spin: Ozzy Osbourne's Second Memoir, 'Last Rites,' Due In October Paul McCartney Plots Fall North American Tour Outtakes: The Kiss private music was produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who previously worked on Deftones' 2010 album Diamond Eyes and its 2012 successor, Koi No Yokan. The former was made in the wake of an aborted album named Eros, on which Deftones began work in 2007 but paused after bassist Chi Cheng was critically injured in a car accident the following year. He died in 2013. 'Nick sort of approached us, and we had the opportunity to pretty much start a whole other record,' frontman Chino Moreno told SPIN in 2020. 'I didn't think the record company was gonna [agree], because we'd already spent a record's [budget]. And then all of a sudden, it's like, OK, we're not gonna put this out. Will you give us money for him to make a brand new record? They said yes, and Nick spearheaded that whole thing. We wrote and recorded that record in like two months — seriously. So it was kind of an experiment on its own, and it worked: Diamond Eyes really captured the spirit of what was happening in our lives. For the next record, it was like, well, that worked. Let's try that again. To me, Koi No Yokan feels like a reprise of Diamond Eyes.' Deftones continue to find new fans thanks to classic albums such as 2000's White Pony, which includes enduring favorites such as 'Change (In the House of Flies),' 'Digital Bath' and 'Passenger.' Asked in 2020 why he thinks White Pony still resonates so strongly with new and old fans alike, he said, 'I think it's one of our best-produced records — it's some of Terry's finest work. The drum sound is awesome. Because we were kind of influenced by a lot of electronic, beat-driven music like DJ Shadow, we really wanted to make a drum-forward album. So, that record has a lot of head nod to it. It's also very expansive. There's a lot of soundscape-y stuff, and there's a heaviness — all those trigger points that Deftones are known for. But I remember when we first put it out, some people didn't get it right way, like, what is this? Where are the Deftones at? Obviously, there are parts that jump out at you, but overall I think it's a headphone record — kind of a slow-burner. So, that's given it life all these years.' The band will be back on the road Aug. 22 in Vancouver and has dates on tap through Sept. 15 in Denver. my mind is a mountainlocked clubecdysisinfinite sourcesouvenircXzi think about you all the timemilk of the madonnacut hands~metal dreamdeparting the body To see our running list of the top 100 greatest rock stars of all time, click here.

Deftones Finally Earns Its First Platinum Singles After Decades Of Music

Deftones finally earn RIAA certification as 13 singles go gold or higher, led by "Change (In the ... More House of Flies)," which achieves quadruple platinum status. STERLING HEIGHTS, MICHIGAN - MAY 23: Chino Moreno of the Deftones performs at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre on May 23, 2022 in Sterling Heights, Michigan. (Photo by) Hard rock band Deftones became hugely popular in the late 1990s and broke out in a major way around the time of the new millennium. The group remains a favorite among a large number of rock fans to this day, and the earliest tunes and albums are still beloved. Somehow, the outfit had never scored even one certified single in the United States before July 3. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) had never officially confirmed that any of the band's tracks had moved half a million units, which is required for gold status – the lowest award given. That has now changed, and the rockers are making up for lost time with a huge number of new wins. Deftones Score 13 Certified Hits at Once In one quick move, the RIAA has granted Deftones not only its first certified single, but 13 such smashes at once. All of the newly-annointed tracks were released across decades, but are only just now collecting plaques. 'Change (In the House of Flies)' stands out as the biggest Deftones single so far, as the RIAA has named it a quadruple platinum single. That means the tune has shifted at least four million equivalent units between pure purchases and streaming activity. Two other cuts achieve multi-platinum status at the same time, as both 'Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)' and 'My Own Summer (Shove It)' are up to the double platinum tier. Meanwhile, 'Cherry Waves,' 'Passenger,' and 'Rosemary' are all platinum wins, as each has moved one million units in the U.S. Seven Gold Records Seven other Deftones tunes begin at the gold level, as all of them have moved at least half a million units – although some may have already pushed past that number, but not quite reached a million. That roundup includes 'Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,' 'Hole in the Earth,' 'Entombed,' 'Minerva,' 'Beware,' 'Around the Fur,' and 'Beauty School.' Several Platinum Albums Four Deftones albums have also been certified by the RIAA, but the band hasn't seen any of its full-lengths snag an additional plaque since 2011. Three projects — Around the Fur, Adrenaline, and White Pony — are tied as the group's biggest, as each has gone platinum. The act's self-titled project was named a gold success in 2003 and has not advanced since.

Deftones appear to be teasing the release of new music next week

Before and after their concert at London's Crystal Palace Park on Sunday (June 29), the nu metal-era stars put a graphic on their video screens that mentioned new music and included the Roman numerals ' The graphic could be a subtle tease towards the release of a new song on July 10. Alternatively, it could point to a new album coming out on October 7, although this is unlikely, as that date will be a Monday and albums are traditionally rolled out on Fridays. The graphic, a picture of which was uploaded to the Deftones subreddit on Sunday and can be seen below, includes the phrase 'private music' and features a circle containing two curved lines. The same symbol can currently be found on the band's website. Deftones released their last album, Ohms, in 2020 and are known to have been working on new music for a 2025 release date. In an interview with Billboard Español conducted in December 2024, frontman Chino Moreno said that their next album is 'getting very close to being ready'. He hoped to have a single out around the time of Deftones' February tour of North American with The Mars Volta, although the tour came and went without a new song. Deftones are currently playing across Europe on a tour that wraps up on July 6. Their live schedule picks back up again with a North American run that kicks off on August 22, potentially giving the band time to release and rehearse new material between tours. Though Deftones played London on Sunday without a hitch, the band dropped out of a slot at Glastonbury festival on Saturday, June 28. They cited health reasons for the last-minute cancellation. Onstage at Crystal Palace, Moreno confirmed that he was the band member affected by the health issue, but didn't clarify what the problem had been. Deftones' next performance will be at Roskilde festival in Denmark on Wednesday, July 2. Numerals are 10.7.2025. What do you reckon? 😮 from r/deftones

Soggy Vans, smeared mascara and kohl - Deftones thrill with set of classics at historic Piece Hall

As the polyphonic opening bars of Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) fill the air there is a split second of silence before Chino Moreno leaps forth to an explosion of sound. Deftones have arrived. Their spectacular show at Halifax's historic Piece Hall on Tuesday night is one of only three UK appearances - their first gigs here for three-years. But it is well worth the wait. READ MORE: Dua Lipa brings out surprise guest for iconic duet at first Liverpool Anfield show READ MORE: Glastonbury 2025 drinks prices revealed as costs rise After kicking off with a classic, the Sacramento rockers roll into the moody, gnarly groove of My Own Summer causing a mass singalong of 'shove it' as the anthemic chorus hits. They keep the energy high during a relentlessly thrilling set of classics from their incredible 30-year back catalogue, pounding through Diamond Eyes, You've Seen The Butcher, Around The Fur and Rosemary. It's probably the encore of Minerva, Bored and 7 Words that hold the most power over the crowd of superfans. But for me, it's the classics from White Pony - an album that marked 25 years this month - that hit hardest. The gnarly opening chords and driving drums of Feiticeira sound phenomenal in the open-air courtyard as the heavens open and the clouds collide. While the sensual, stirring Digital Bath sounds brooding and dramatic in the night air. White Pony burst forth at a time when Nu Metal ruled the airwaves. And though Deftones most famous song, Back to School bore all the hallmarks of a Nu Metal hit, that single version of a far more textured album track never truly represented their sound. There's a reason this studied, experimental band has survived long after the peers that populated the alternative landscape of the early 2000s. Their moody, layered soundscapes combine elements of shoegaze, punk and triphop. Often cited as the Radiohead of the metal scene, they have always expanded their music with samples. As such, keyboardist and turntablist Frank Delgado brings texture and complexity during a set that showcases the band's range. But Deftones are predominantly a metal act. So much is owed to the power and anger of Abe Cunningham's distinctive drumming, with his crisp snares and complex time signatures driving the sound. Guitarist Stephen Carpenter is as unshowy as ever. He calmly stands stock still for 90 minutes throwing out incredible riffs, chuggy chords and deceptively complex compositions. But it's Moreno's mercurial tenor - both thrusting and vulnerable - and his distinctive scream that truly elevate Deftones. The frontman spits, snarls and growls out his angsty, cerebral lyrics while rampaging across the stage and leaping off monitors and amps. And his signature Spongebob-style tube socks are of course shown off at every opportunity. From the second Deftones hit the stage, they are greeted by torrential rain. But it matters little to the 6,000 metalheads who dance, jump and throng in the pit. Those sensible enough to bring an anorak let loose among the melange of soggy Vans, smeared mascara and kohl. This is a glorious show of cinematic, anthemic metal hits. Please don't leave it another three years before visiting us again, lads.
