ED Officer, Arrested By CBI For Taking Bribe, Released On Interim Bail
Orissa: Enforcement Directorate's Deputy Director Chintan Raghuvanshi, who was arrested by the CBI while allegedly accepting a bribe from a businessman in Bhubaneswar, was released on interim bail from the Jharpada jail on Friday evening. The Orissa High Court granted him interim bail on Wednesday for 10 days on the ground that the young officer became a father on June 28 and he wanted to see his newborn baby and attend some rituals. "The IRS officer was released from jail this evening after the relevant documents from the high court and the lower court were produced to the jail authorities," his lawyer, Lalitendu Mishra, said. A single-judge bench of Justice Gourishankar Satapathy granted the interim bail on the condition that he should not leave the country during the 10-day period. Raghuvanshi and his associate were arrested in Bhubaneswar on May 30 after being allegedly caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of Rs 20 lakh from a man who is in mining. According to the CBI, he demanded Rs 5 crore from the businessman, who was involved in certain financial irregularities, to not arrest him. The businessman negotiated it down to Rs 2 crore, and the Rs 20 lakh cash was a part of it.

Days before Delhi's Rekha Gupta government hit the 100-day milestone, the Delhi BJP decided to unveil a new avatar for its freshly elected block and district-level leaders: the political 'SHO'. In a move that blends local governance with dramatic roleplay, these grassroots leaders received a solemn message from senior functionaries that they must act like 'SHOs'. The abbreviation stands for Station House Officer–a police officer in charge of a police station. The message was clear: don't be mere office-bearers; take up responsibility and serve the people in your respective blocks and wards. ED's problem: Officials in graft cases Since the CBI has arrested Enforcement Directorate's Deputy Director Chintan Raghuvanshi, a 2013-batch IRS officer, on graft charges, bureaucratic circles are agog about the impending malice in the law enforcement agency, which administers the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Raghuvanshi is not the only ED officer accused of alleged bribery. Several similar cases in various states have come to light in recent times. A retired IPS officer of the 1988 batch, who served a stint in the ED, said that the enhanced powers to the agency under the PMLA are not a new phenomenon. So, it is not the case of 'power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely'. He said that until almost 2018, the staffing of the ED was primarily dominated by police officers, who had always had exposure to administering the criminal provisions under the law. When the criminal clauses were inserted in the PMLA, it was not new to them, and they handled it with care. However, as officers from revenue and other financial services began joining the agency, many of whom had very little training in dealing with the criminal provisions of the laws, such graft cases came to light more frequently. Officers joining the ED, irrespective of their service cadre, should be given training on how to deal with and invoke the criminal provisions of the PMLA, he said.

Top Enforcement Directorate Official Arrested For Taking Bribe Of Rs 20 Lakh
Bhubaneswar: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Chintan Raghuvanshi, Deputy Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Bhubaneswar, in a high-profile bribery case. Mr Raghuvanshi, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, was allegedly caught red-handed during a trap operation while accepting a Rs 20 lakh bribe from a mining businessman in Bhubaneswar. According to the CBI Advocate, the total bribe demand was Rs 2 crore and Rs 20 lakh was received as part of the bribe. The CBI advocate said, "The ED Deputy Director (arrested ED officer) had demanded a bribe. He had demanded Rs 2 Crores and received Rs 20 Lakhs. We have arrested him. He has now been sent to jail under judicial custody." The court has remanded Raghuvanshi to judicial custody for 14 days, and the matter has been posted for further hearing on the bail application. The operation was part of a wider investigation into alleged corruption within the ranks of the ED (Enforcement Directorate). Following his arrest, Raghuvanshi was produced before the court today after his medical examination at the capital hospital. Advocate Sidhant Mohanty appeared on behalf of the accused during the bail proceedings. Mohanty said, "The Bail hearing was done today, and an FIR has been registered under section 7 of the PC Act (Prevention of Corruption Act). The matter is posted to the 4th of June. The investigation is supposed to continue." The court, after hearing initial arguments, sent Raghuvanshi to judicial custody. The matter has now been posted for further hearing on the bail application on June 4. An FIR has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and the investigation is ongoing.

CBI arrests senior ED official from Odisha in Rs 2-crore bribery case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a deputy director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Odisha on Friday in connection with an alleged bribery deal. The agency apprehended the senior ED official, Chintan Raghuvanshi, a 2013-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, after he demanded a bribe of Rs 2 crore from an Odisha-based mining trader. This was allegedly after the ED raided multiple locations linked to the businessman's company. The CBI laid a trap after the complainant purportedly informed the agency about the situation. An FIR was lodged Thursday. 'In the complaint, it is alleged that Chintan Raghuvanahi has demanded a bribe of Rs 5 crore (which was further reduced to Rs 2 crore), out of which, first installment of Rs 50 lakh is to be paid to him on 28.05.2025 through… a private person in exchange for not attaching his hospital and not arresting him and to settle an ED case,' read the FIR. The agency verified the complaint through an officer, who in his report, said the 'private person' had directed the complainant to pay Rs 50 lakh as the first installment at 11 am Thursday, CBI sources told The Indian Express, adding that the agency recovered colour-coded cash while arrested the official. The ED official's lawyer Siddhant Mohanty was quoted by PTI as saying in Bhubaneswar that a special CBI court has remanded Raghuvanshi to judicial custody for 14 days. 'However, his bail petition has not been rejected. It will be heard on June 4,' Mohanty said. When contacted, the lawyer refused to make any further comments.
