Liberty County Sheriff's Office and Jail complex nears completion

LIBERTY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – A facility that's built for the future: the Liberty County Sheriff's Office and Jail Complex is just months away from completion. For years, the sheriff's office has worked out of makeshift offices, while running a jail built in 1942. 'It's the oldest operational jail in the state of Florida right now. So, the design of it, while it was functional back then, is not functional now,' Liberty County Sheriff Dusty Arnold said. Sheriff Dusty Arnold and his deputies are set to move into the new facility, which will streamline operations all under one roof. The $23,000,000 project is fully funded by state appropriations. Liberty County Sheriff's Office to host Junior Deputy Day Camp With the 128-bed jail, Sheriff Arnold says the complex is built to accommodate any future growth Liberty County may experience. For the first time, the jail features a control tower, an intake room, and a sallyport. 'The old jail that was built in 1942 does not have a sallyport, doesn't have a fence or anything. The deputy literally pulls up to the front door and lets the inmate out, and walks into the jail. This right here will have the sallyport, you pull in, the gate will shut behind if the inmate wants to do anything, try to run or anything like that, they're in a closed facility and they can't when they get out of the patrol car,' Arnold said. On the other side of the building, the new sheriff's office features a fitness facility, a break room, a media room, beds for employees if they need to stay overnight in a natural disaster, and more. 'The training room is to invite other agencies to come up here and do different classes like radar and laser, interdiction courses, and different courses that our instructors can offer now. But we're thinking towards the future. Hopefully, one day we can partner with either Chipola College or Pat Thomas [Law Enforcement Academy at Tallahassee State College] and make this a facility where you can actually train law enforcement and corrections in the future,' Arnold added. The jail and the dispatch center in the Sheriff's office are rated to withstand a Category 5 Hurricane. The remainder of the sheriff's office is rated to withstand a Category 3 hurricane. Contractor Culpepper Construction is more than three months ahead of set to be complete on September 17th. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Who is Jessie J's partner? Everything you need to know

Jessie J has hit headlines after she bravely went public to announce she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The singer took to her Instagram page to share the devastating news, telling fans the cancer is still in its early stages and confirming she will undergo surgery in the near future. The Price Tag singer said she plans on undergoing the surgery following her performance at this month's Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium and joked it was a 'dramatic way' to get a boob job as she attempted to put on a brave face. Jessie J is a mum and in a long term relationship with boyfriend Chanan Safir Colman, who is understood to be supporting her through this time. Here is all we know about him: Born in Denmark, Colman is a now retired former professional basketball player from the Israel Basketball Premier League. He was born in 1984 in Gladsaxe, Denmark to an Israeli mother and an American father and grew up there. In his career he last played for Hapoel Haifa of the Israel Basketball Premier League and before this, played college basketball for Chipola College in Marianna, Florida, before going on to play for professional leagues in Finland, Denmark and now Israel. He is close to his family and regularly posts on his own social media channels about them. In September 2022, he shared a photo of his mum on her birthday and wrote: 'You are by far the strongest, most caring, loving and forgiving human being I know.' Jessie J first went public with her boyfriend Chanan Safir Colman in 2023, but it is believed they were together a while before this date, around 2021 - first meeting just weeks after Jessie J first experienced a miscarriage. She spoke about her love for Colman after the pair welcomed their first child Sky together May 2023, calling him 'the calm to my crazy,' 'the peace to my fear' and, finally, 'the Daddy to my baby.' She shared a snap of the pair on her socials and wrote: 'I struggle to keep things private. I think if you know me, you know that. I want to protect people I love and keep it for myself.' Sky is now two years old. She continued, 'And then so often I think f--- it because life is short and don't want to regret it. Once you open the door, you can't close it." She referred to her partner as a 'beam of light' that 'lit up my dark days,' adding that their relationship has been 'a whirlwind love.' The birth announcement came after Jessie J experienced the miscarriage in November 2021. 'For all of you that have followed my journey to this moment, thank you for all your continued love and support,' she wrote following the birth of her son. Before finding Colman, Jessie J was in a long term relationship with Hollywood actor Channing Tatum. She dated the Magic Mike star on and off for around two years, with the pair first linked in October 2018. They were seen together loved up, but split in December 2019 before getting back together in 2020, but broke up later on. Before Channing, Jessie J was with fellow singer and R&B star Luke James, with the pair dating from November 2014 to October 2015. They reportedly met through friends in the music industry and were seen together on numerous occasions during their relationship but kept their love out of the limelight.

Local students deploy artificial reefs after three month challenge

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – On Thursday, local students saw all their hard work come to fruition. On May 8, a program sponsored by the Bay County Artificial Reef Association, the University of Florida IFAS Extension, Eastern Shipbuilding Group and some local schools with welding programs. Students at Wewahitchka and Port St. Joe high schools, Haney Technical College and Chipola College participated in the second annual Eastern Shipbuilding Group Coastline Initiative. It's a one-of-a-kind competition that challenges students from local schools to design and build innovative artificial reefs. Eastern Shipbuilding Group challenges students to build artificial reefs Eastern Shipbuilding Group donated the scrap material and equipment, and helped approve the plans for the three month reef project. On Thursday, the Bay County Artificial Reef Association took the four reefs out to a permitted zone, about 15 to 28 miles offshore from Panama City. They were carefully lowered to the bottom of the gulf, between 100-140 feet deep. They'll become habitats for snapper, grouper, amberjack, trigger fish and many other marine life species. Getting the reefs to the bottom took some skill and coordination among the crew members. There are a lot of guidelines they had to follow. The reefs had to be out of a certain material and the crew could not leave any ropes or debris on them. 'Dang, it broke easy, didn't it. We tried to right the reef and as you can see, all our twine come back with what we were doing. So, zero line is left on the reef,' Bay County Artificial Reef Association B.J. Burkett said. Anyone who wants to dive or fish off the reefs will have to wait, as the Bay County Artificial Reef Association wants to make sure they have time to establish marine life. They'll post the coordinates publicly in about a year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Jose Caballero Gives Rays Plenty Of Options In Lineup, Field

SAN DIEGO: Jose Caballero of the Tampa Bay Rays throws to first base during the fourth inning ... More against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on April 26, 2025 in San Diego, California. (Photo by) It is unlikely Jose Caballero will appear at all nine positions in a single game as Bert Campaneris did for the Kansas City A's in 1965. The Rays' all-purpose player, though, has twice played three positions this season. In both instances, at San Diego on April 26 and versus Philadelphia on May 8, one of the positions was right field, which has been a new spot for him this season. An exceptional infielder, Caballero started 83 games at short, 20 at third and 20 at second for the Rays in 2024. He has added all three outfield spots to his resume this year, has played six positions and started at five. His performance at times has been of the highlight-reel variety, including robbing the Yankees' Ben Rice of a home run in April. (Playing at short the following day, Caballero effectively hiked the baseball to Brandon Lowe in turning a 6-4-3.) 'I am trying to be in the lineup and help the team win in any way possible,' said the 28-year-old Caballero, noting the primary adjustment he has had to make in the outfield is tracking a ball in the air versus on the ground. Caballero, who was drafted by the Diamondbacks in the seventh round in 2017 out of Chipola College in the Florida Panhandle, played left field a handful of times in the Arizona Fall League in 2019 when he was in the Seattle system and a couple of innings at the position with the Mariners during his rookie season of 2023. It wasn't until spring training this year that Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash turned to Caballero to become at least a somewhat a familiar face in the outfield. Having signed shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, who is nearing a return from a shoulder injury that prematurely ended his 2024 season and required surgery, and with Taylor Walls able to superbly play multiple infield spots, Caballero was a prime candidate to spend some time in the outfield. 'We got him reps in outfield during spring training because of how valuable he can be,' said Cash, whose team defeated the Twins on Monday evening for its sixth straight win. 'It's pretty remarkable how a guy that doesn't have many reps in the outfield has really grown to look very comfortable out there. He's getting good jumps, good reads on the ball, his arm strength is well above average. He plays defense with a lot of confidence.' Caballero is confident on the base paths. A native of Panama who arrived at Chipola in the fall of 2015 not knowing a word of English – 'It was kind of hard for me to understand the coaches and my teammates. I made the effort to learn and understand what they were saying.' -- was joking with reporters prior to the start of the past weekend's three-game series against the Blue Jays that he has yet to receive a gift from MLB for leading the junior circuit in stolen bases last season. The 5-foot-11 and 190-pounder swiped 44 bags last season to edge Cleveland's Jose Ramirez, who had 41. It was a nice accomplishment, for sure, but Caballero was not overly impressed with his effort because he fell short of his goal. 'I set my goals and if I reach them, then I am happy with that,' he said. 'If I lead the American League, it's great. But I am trying to be the best version of myself and I wasn't too happy with myself because I did not reach my goal.' That goal? 'The goal is 50,' he said. 'I have to reach 50. We will see.' Caballero heads into play Tuesday third in the AL with 15 steals. What has stood out about his offensive performance this season is that he is getting on base at a much better rate than 2024, his first season with the Rays after being acquired from Seattle for outfielder Luke Raley. Like all good base stealers, Caballero's presence on the basepaths can create an unsettled feeling with the defense. 'Obviously, I want to (steal a base), but if I can't I still want (the pitcher) to be thinking about me instead of the hitter,' he said. 'Even if I don't get the steal, I feel like we can steal a win because pitchers are focusing on something besides the hitter.' Caballero has shown much improvement at the plate this season and with his name appearing in six different spots in the lineup – second and fifth through ninth. 'I guess everybody wants to be in the top of the lineup,' said Caballero, who started at least one game in seven different spots in the order last season and even had an at-bat in the cleanup spot after entering a game late. 'I am trying to do the little things to help the team. That is pretty much how I see it.' Through Monday evening's victory at Steinbrenner Field, he was hitting .242 with 14 walks and a .319 OBP in 135 plate appearances. In 2024, those numbers were .227/27/.283 OBP in 483 PAs. 'Trying to be more selective, trying to get my pitch,' he said of his improvement with a bat in his hands. 'I want to control the zone overall and try to get on base, which is a key part of my game because of my speed and how much pressure I put on the pitchers.'
