Ahead of ‘26 poll, all is not well in PMK camp
Chennai: Despite hosting a massive conference on Chithirai Pournami day on Sunday at Mamallapuram near Chennai to prove the party's strength, the growing differences between party founder S Ramadoss and his son and party president Anbumani Ramadoss were evident when they shared the stage on the occasion. With less than a year left for the state election, the strains between father and son was clearly evident with senior Ramadoss making no attempt to hide his displeasure. Ramadoss used the stage to establish that he was the boss and he would decide on party affairs and also about the alliance for the forthcoming polls. When Ramadoss asserted that he would decide the alliance and indirectly pointed out at Anbumani to work for the party, Anbumani couldn't do much but merely mentioned Anbumani's name only once and did not refer to him as the party president but the in-charge for the successful conduct of the might be recalled that Ramadoss last month removed Anbumani from his post as the president and 'appointed' him working president and declared that he would function as the founder president of the party. Anbumani reacted sharply and maintained that he will continue to lead the party in a way that honoured its efforts to downplay the rift with his father and cajole him did not yield any fruitful results as senior Ramadoss was harsh and made his intentions clear that anyone overruling his decisions cannot continue in the party. "You own two luxury cars and four mobile phones. You can own four more mobile phones but work hard for the party for the 2026 assembly election. Those who don't work for the 2026 election will be removed from their post even if they are MLAs. I will throw you in the sea," he told the gathering of the conference seated next to father and son have differences in opinion on alliance issues. While Anbumani has been keen in aligning with BJP and has launched attempts to promote his wife Soumiya Anbumani in the political sphere, Ramadoss was against his son's idea and preferred an alliance with one of the two Dravidian majors."Ramadoss appointing his grandson P Mukundan as president of the party's youth wing was the last straw forcing Anbumani to openly register his objection. Our leader's (Anbumani) objection is genuine and just. Mukundan is not only a family member of the founder, but he joined the party just a few months ago. Even at Sunday's Chithirai youth conference, Mukundan guided the party founder to the stage further irking our leader and his followers," said a party functionary, seeking functionaries openly criticised Ramadoss for his remarks and suggested he retire from politics. But Ramadoss is in no mood to step down as he said, "Don't think I am old. I may be 87 years old, but I am still strong." For his part, Anbumani was "careful and mature" while delivering his speech.

Chithirai Pournami draws 20,000; vendor booth rental reduced
TELUK INTAN: The Perak government has offered a RM400 reduction in business site rental fees to vendors during the Chithirai Pournami festival held in Teluk Intan. State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration Committee chairman A. Sivanesa said that a total of 114 booths have been provided by the Teluk Intan Municipal Council (MPTI) with a rental fee of RM2,500 for the 10 days of business activities during the celebration period, which runs from May 9 to 18. 'If last year, the MPTI charged a rental rate of RM2,900 throughout Chithirai Pournami festival and received complaints from traders who claimed the rate was too high, then this year the state government decided to provide a reduction of RM400 in rental rates. 'The Chithirai Pournami festival is a celebration that has been held for three days since yesterday on a grand scale in Teluk Intan because it is the most popular festival. The MPTI and other stakeholders made thorough and appropriate preparations so that Hindu devotees could celebrate it without any issues,' he said. Sivanesan said this when met by reporters while surveying the Chithirai Pournami celebration around the Sri Thendayuthapani Temple on Jalan Bandar here today. There was excitement in the air as about 20,000 Hindu devotees flooded the 150-year-old temple since 4 am today to fulfill their vows, starting with the 'paal koodam' ceremony or carrying pots containing milk, followed by prayer rituals, carrying kavadis and breaking of coconuts. Chithirai Pournami refers to the full moon that falls in the first month of the Tamil calendar known as Chithirai, and it is one of the important festivals for Hindus in Malaysia. According to Hindu religious beliefs, the yearly celebration is held to commemorate the birth of Chitragupta, the divine keeper of deeds, who was born during a full moon.

Madras High Court allows PMK rally with strict conditions to prevent law and order issues
CHENNAI: Amid apprehensions expressed over the likelihood of unseemly events during the PMK's ambitious 'Chithirai Muzhu Nilavu' rally and conference scheduled to be held on May 11, the Madras High Court on Thursday ordered the party to furnish an undertaking to the police for strict adherence to the pre-conditions to ensure no law and order problems are created. A division bench of justices N Mala and G Arul Murugan issued the orders while disposing of a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking to deny permission to the PMK's conference to be held at Thiruvidanthai, near Tiruporur. 'The respondent (PMK) shall furnish an undertaking to the North Zone Police IG to the effect that the conditions imposed by the police will scrupulously be adhered to,' the bench said in the order. It also instructed the organisers of the conference to ensure none of the participants carry any arms or ammunitions while attending the event. The bench directed the North Zone IG to strictly monitor the conduct of the conference and deploy additional contingents of the personnel to ensure no law and issues are created during the programme. Further, it granted liberty to government authorities to impose any such conditions that are deemed necessary to regulate participants, apart from the 42 conditions already imposed. The PIL, filed by J Muthukumar of Madambakkam, recalled the widespread violence and large scale damaging of public property during a similar PMK rally in 2013, and sought the court to restrain the officials concerned from granting permission to the rally and conference which coincides with the Chithirai Pournami festival.
