'Community feedback' and threats: Burlington pauses program for homeless before it starts
Just one day after a pilot program was announced that would allow unhoused people to park their cars at Perkins Pier overnight, city officials rolled back the program, stating it was on an 'indefinite pause.' The statement came from Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak's office. The program was slated to begin on the evening of July 4, with interested participants needing to request a permit to park for free between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. At the time the city decided to roll back the program on July 3, city staff had not initiated intake or issued permits for overnight parking. The mayor's office said the administration came to this decision based on 'substantial community feedback, and out of concern for the safety of program participants based on threatening comments made by members of the public on various online platforms.' The pilot program was coming at a critical time, as Vermont's hotel/motel program canceled vouchers and exits dozens of families from the housing program. Data shared by the Agency of Human Services indicates 100 households, including 61 children, were required to leave motels beginning July 1 across Chittenden County. The free and safe parking was just one initiative to help. The mayor's office said it will 'continue to consult with city staff as this situation evolves, and should different responses be necessary from a public health and safety perspective, we will prioritize notice to the community.' The city also shared that 'it is important to note that the city of Burlington does not have the resources or staff capacity to address the need for shelter or services to respond to the crisis of unsheltered homelessness.' The city administration said they will continue to call on state officials to ensure more stable shelter is available to households as they wait for permanent, affordable housing to be secured. Shelter providers and advocates from across Vermont said they will continue to hold emergency meetings and planning sessions to sound the alarm over this crisis caused by mass evictions from the state's General Assistance Emergency Housing Program. Chittenden County home listings asked for more money in May - see the current median price here
The median home in Chittenden County listed for $614,900 in May, up 2.7% from the previous month's $598,500, an analysis of data from shows. Compared to May 2024, the median home list price decreased 4.6% from $655,475. The statistics in this article only pertain to houses listed for sale in Chittenden County, not houses that were sold. Information on your local housing market, along with other useful community data, is available at Chittenden County's median home was 1,988 square feet, listed at $318 per square foot. The price per square foot of homes for sale is down 2.7% from May 2024. Listings in Chittenden County moved briskly, at a median 32 days listed compared to the May national median of 51 days on the market. In the previous month, homes had a median of 37 days on the market. Around 232 homes were newly listed on the market in May, a 22.1% increase from 190 new listings in May 2024. The median home prices issued by may exclude many, or even most, of a market's homes. The price and volume represent only single-family homes, condominiums or townhomes. They include existing homes, but exclude most new construction as well as pending and contingent sales. Across the Burlington-South Burlington metro area, median home prices rose to $566,850, slightly higher than a month earlier. The median home had 1,928 square feet, at a list price of $300 per square foot. In Vermont, median home prices were $519,000, a slight increase from April. The median Vermont home listed for sale had 1,984 square feet, with a price of $272 per square foot. Throughout the United States, the median home price was $440,000, a slight increase from the month prior. The median American home for sale was listed at 1,840 square feet, with a price of $234 per square foot. The median home list price used in this report represents the midway point of all the houses or units listed over the given period of time. Experts say the median offers a more accurate view of what's happening in a market than the average list price, which would mean taking the sum of all listing prices then dividing by the number of homes sold. The average can be skewed by one particularly low or high price. Construction season: where to expect delays next week
VERMONT (ABC22/FOX44) – Road improvements and repairs are going to be taking place all over the state as we head towards summer. Detailed information on ongoing construction projects can be found on the VTrans website, but a summary of the most impactful road and lane closures is below. Chittenden County: Part of Vermont Route 116/Hinesburg Road will be closed with detours in place near Sunset Avenue in South Burlington on weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The closures will continue through June 23. This will be in addition to a separate lane closure further south on the same road. Interstate 89 in Colchester near Exit 17 will be reduced to a single lane in both directions weekdays during off-peak hours through the summer of 2026. The U.S. Route 2 overpass in Richmond that crosses over Interstate 89 will have alternating one-way traffic from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays through September. Continued work on Industrial Avenue in Williston will require alternating one-way traffic and the closure of the southbound right-turn-only lane of VT 2A from 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. VT 128 between Fairfax and Essex will see alternating one-way traffic from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on weekdays. Construction will continue elsewhere, including on Main Street in Winooski and the intersection of Main and Pine Street in Burlington. Northern Vermont: VT 12 in Worcester will have two sections with alternating one-way traffic from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. as bridge replacement work continues. A paving project on I-89 will cause lane closures and a speed limit reduction to 55 miles per hour between Exit 20 and Exit 22 in Swanton. VT 105 in Enosburg Falls will be reduced to one lane near the intersections with Water Tower Road and Pleasant Street. VT 15 will see alternating one-way traffic between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. between Hillcrest Drive in Johnson and the VT 108 roundabout in Cambridge. U.S. 2 will see alternating one-way traffic near the Marshfield Dam in Marshfield from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. VT 105 from Sheldon to Enosburg will see alternating one-way traffic from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with rough pavement surfaces expected. Central Vermont: A large-scale highway resurfacing project will result in much of U.S. 7, U.S. 4, and U.S. BUS 4 in Rutland being subject to delays with alternating one-way traffic. U.S. 302 between Barre and Orange will begin guardrail work on Monday. There will be multiple closures with alternating one-way traffic. Due to paving work on Richardson Road in Washington, alternating one-way traffic will be set up on VT 110. The U.S. 4 Queechee Gorge Bridge in Hartford will see alternating one-way traffic. The trail at the bridge underpass is still closed through fall 2025. I-89 in Royalton will see single-lane traffic and speed limit reductions as work on the bridges continues on weekdays.
